Chapter 106: The Hut
After resting at the kitchen table for more than half an hour and finishing our tea, I was feeling much better than before.
Cough.
There were still small coughs that caught me from time to time. But for the most part, my temperature had returned to normal and the burning sensation in my chest had subsided. The magical herbs had done their job well.
It was the same for Viora too. The pink color on her nose and ears had faded. She was still holding her empty ceramic mug with both hands, using the last of its radiating warmth to soothe her palms.
Seeing that she was stable, my mind immediately snapped back to reality. The brief moment of the cozy morning evaporated and was replaced by urgency.
I needed to go out and search for Black.
According to the system quest I had received, I only had six days left to uncover his true identity. Six days to find out exactly who and what he was.
I had to hurry if I didn’t want the system to label me an idiot and slap me with Intelligence points because I couldn’t complete one quest.
"Viora," I said, "I am going out to find out about Black—the guy who wants to kill me. Do you want to come?"
I asked, though I already anticipated her reaction.
Viora slowly set her mug down on the wooden table. She tilted her head toward me until her eyes locked onto my position.
"Why are you asking? Of course I am coming," she said with zero hesitation.
Hearing her, I went quiet and began thinking about how I would actually complete this quest.
Where the hell was I supposed to start? Should I go directly to the place where he had called me? The old, abandoned hut in the woods? Or should I try to look for his wife and daughter to figure out what kind of person he really was?
Both options seemed practically impossible.
If I chose the first one, I could easily run straight into Black. He definitely wouldn’t be pleased with me snooping around his place and going through his personal things. If he caught me, a fight would be inevitable, and I wasn’t entirely sure I was ready for it yet.
For the second option, the hurdles were even worse. I had to find out where his family lived first, and in a world this vast and fragmented by Gates, tracking down two specific civilians without any official resources was like searching for a needle in a garden.
But I had to start from somewhere anyway. A ticking clock waits for no one.
I pushed my chair back and stood up completely, stretching my arms to shake off the remaining stiffness in my muscles.
"Are you feeling okay now?" Then I looked down at Viora and asked. "If your head is still heavy, you should stay and rest. I can handle a bit of scouting alone."
Viora stood up right after me and deliberately stepped close enough that her shoulder brushed against my arm. Before she could speak, she let out a tiny cough into her fist, then shook her head.
"I told you, I am fine," she murmured. "The fever is gone. A little cough won’t stop me from tearing him apart if he shows his face."
The magical herbs couldn’t recover us completely, but at least we had gotten rid of the fever. Now, our bodies were responsive enough for movement.
"Alright," I said. "Change into something more suitable for going out than these pajamas. We are leaving. Oh... Also make sure to wear the cap from yesterday."
....
An hour later, we found ourselves standing at the edge of the city, where the concrete roads gradually dissolved into dirt paths, eventually leading into a dense, overgrown forest.
The weather today wasn’t helping the mood at all. The sky was still heavily overcast with thick, gray clouds that completely blocked out the sun, casting a dim twilight over the landscape. The air smelled of damp earth and rotting leaves from last night’s heavy downpour.
Our destination was the old, isolated hut where Black had met me. It was the only place I had connecting me to his existence.
As we stepped deeper into the woods, the surrounding environment quickly became incredibly creepy and mysterious.
Thick layers of dark green moss covered the surroundings, and the canopy overhead was so dense that it barely let any light through. Every step we took resulted in a loud, squelching sound as our boots sank into the muddy ground.
’It is really silent, just like last time.’
There were no sounds of birds chirping or small animals rustling through the bushes. The only thing filling the quiet air was the sound of water droplets falling from the wet leaves onto the forest ground.
"Woo Jin," Viora whispered, who was walking beside me. "The air here... it feels heavy. There is a trace of old mana scattered all over the trees."
"I feel it too," I murmured back. "We are getting close. Keep your senses sharp, but don’t overexert yourself. We don’t want a relapse of that fever."
After walking for another ten minutes through the twisting paths, the dense trees suddenly thinned out slightly, revealing a small clearing.
And there it was.
Nestled right in the middle of the overgrown gray grass stood the small old hut.
The half-broken door swayed slightly as a cold breeze swept through the place, making a sharp, agonizing creaking sound that echoed through the quiet forest.
Creak... Creak...
I stopped and my hand instinctively dropped to the hilt of my weapon. The atmosphere of the place was screaming at me to turn around and walk away. It felt like a trap, like an open mouth waiting for us to step inside.
"Is anyone inside?" I asked and turned my head slightly toward Viora.
Viora stood completely still for a few seconds. Her eyes were blank as she focused entirely on her perception.
"No," she replied, shaking her head. "There is no active momentum inside. No heartbeats. It’s completely dead. But..."
She paused as her nose twitched slightly.
"...the scent of old blood is very strong coming from inside that door."
My grip loosened on my dagger. If there was no one inside, this was my absolute best chance to gather clues before the six-day timer ran out.
"Let’s move," I muttered. "Stay behind me."
