Chapter 107: A Toy
Creeeeeak~
Slowly, pushing with slight strength, I was able to open the door. However, the moment the door was fully opened, its top hinge groaned violently.
The wood was already rotted too much and gave way completely. The heavy door, which was barely attached to the frame in the first place, broke off entirely.
Thump!
It crashed loudly onto the dusty wooden floorboards, sending a small cloud of gray dust into the air.
"What happened?" Viora asked instantly. Her ears caught the sudden noise as she shifted her weight into a defensive stance.
"The door broke," I replied and waved a hand in front of her face to disperse the floating dust.
I said that, but in reality, I didn’t care about the broken door at all. I had only one single goal running in my mind: finding out about Black before he randomly came back here and caught us snooping around.
I wasn’t necessarily scared of him, but if he came back right now, a fight between him and Viora would become inevitable.
A clash between two people possessing that level of monstrous strength wouldn’t just destroy this tiny hut. It would cause a massive mana disturbance that would attract the immediate attention of the Association. That was the last thing I needed right now.
So, let me just go through his things, find a diary, a document, or anything that can give me a clue—
"Wait..."
I stepped over the fallen door and into the center of the room. My eyes scanned the surroundings, which made my words trail off.
"Where are his things?!"
The small hut, which had been filled with mysterious items during my first visit, was completely empty. The rare artifacts, the various weapons resting against the walls, and even the single wooden chair—all of it was completely gone.
The only thing left inside the entire room was the weathered wooden table in the middle of the floorboards.
This... What on earth is this? Did Black somehow know I would come back here today?
I gritted my teeth and approached the table. Right in the center of it, a single piece of white paper was placed face up, held down by a small pebble so the breeze wouldn’t blow it away.
I tossed the pebble aside and picked up the paper. There were only two lines written on it in sharp, heavy black ink.
<If you want to meet me, then come to this location at 8:00 PM on the 23rd.>
<Not With Regards: Black>
Beneath the text, coordinates were scribbled down, pointing to a location he wanted me to come to.
’Shit. He already knew about my arrival.’
My mind began to race backward, replaying every single interaction I had ever shared with him. And as I thought about it, a realization fell over me.
’Wait a minute...’ I thought. ’When I first went to that Gate where I ran into him... did he already know exactly who I was?’
At that time, I was wearing the paper bag mask. I had thought my identity was perfectly secure, hidden behind a cheap piece of grocery store trash.
Black was someone whose strength defied the standard ranking system of this world. Heck, even my system can’t identify him.
To someone that powerful, someone who could casually manipulate gravity fields, sensing the specific biological signature, heartbeat, or physical build of a person behind a thin layer of paper would be child’s play, probably.
He knew. He knew it was me from the very beginning.
’And that is why he let me come with him into the Gate,’ the thoughts kept flowing as I pieced everything together.
’He didn’t just casually accept a random rookie Hunter. He allowed me to tag along because he recognized me. He gave me that high-grade mana stone and that special contact card because he wanted to establish a connection with me from the start.’
Everything was falling into place now.
I remembered the day of the raid vividly. Black had explicitly mentioned to the group that a fourth member was supposed to join them, someone who supposedly got delayed at the last minute. But that guy never showed up.
’Don’t tell me...’ A cold shiver ran straight down my spine. ’Don’t tell me he sensed me hiding behind the concrete wall near the entrance before the raid even started? Did he just completely make up the whole story about a fourth guy getting delayed just to give me an excuse to step out of the shadows?’
If that was the truth, then that guy was far more terrifying and calculated than I ever anticipated. He wasn’t just a powerful rogue Hunter moving through the shadows; he was an expert strategist who was actively playing a long game, manipulating situations to draw me directly toward him.
I needed to be extremely careful. If I didn’t get a step ahead of him right now, I was going to get completely swept away by whatever dangerous plans he was cooking up in the dark.
"Woo Jin?" Viora’s voice broke through my thoughts. She stepped closer to me and her hand reached out until her fingers gently touched the fabric of my sleeve. "What does the paper say? Is he trying to threaten you?"
"No," I sighed, folding the paper and sliding it into the zippered pocket of my pants. "He is inviting me to a meeting. He knew we would come here to look for him."
I turned away from the empty table and looked out through the broken doorway.
Relying on Black’s terms was a massive gamble. The coordinates on the paper pointed to a meeting two days from now, but my system quest only had six days left in total. Waiting around idly for his scheduled meeting would leave me with zero time to react if things went sideways.
I needed an independent counterattack or leverage. I needed to know what his weakness was before 8:00 PM on the 23rd.
While I was thinking really hard, an idea appeared in my mind.
"Viora," I turned my head toward her. "Do you know if there are any kindergartens or small schools located near the stall called Spice and Flame?"
Viora tilted her head and her short hair brushed against her collarbone as she processed the question.
"Spice and Flame..." she murmured. "Yes, I know it. There is a small daycare called the Morning Star Initiative just two streets behind the main street. Why do you ask, Woo Jin?"
"We are going there," I said and a small smile formed on my lips. "Black might be a ghost in the Hunter registry, but every ghost leaves a footprint where they feel safe. Let’s see what kind of father he is."
.....
We left the creepy and silent forest behind and now, after half an hour, we were walking through the bustling streets of the city.
Viora was wearing the cap I had bought her yesterday to hide her head. She kept her left hand locked tightly with mine, and I guided her footsteps through the thick crowd of shoppers and vendors.
Soon, the noise of the vendors gradually faded away and was replaced by the distant sounds of children laughing and playing.
"That’s the place," Viora said and pointed her index finger toward a two-story building which had a sign reading ’Morning Star Initiative’.
I stopped a few meters away from the gate and leaned against a pillar. My eyes scanned the courtyard where a dozen children were running around in circles under the eye of an elderly female teacher.
I didn’t recognize any of them, of course.
But I wasn’t looking for the child first. I was looking for any sign of Black’s presence.
"Woo Jin," Viora suddenly murmured my name, and her grip on my hand tightened significantly as her head turned slightly toward the left side of the fence.
"What is it? Did you sense someone?" I asked in a low voice, and my eyes immediately darted toward the area she was facing.
*Cough*
"There is an object... resting against the wooden post over there," While talking she coughed once and continued. Even on the way we both had coughed a few times. "It is completely still, so I didn’t notice it at first. But the mana signature coming from it... matches the heavy essence I smelled inside the empty forest hut."
I focused my gaze on the specific wooden post she was describing. Tied to the base of the fence was a small, hand-carved wooden toy—a tiny silhouette of a flying bird, painted in faded blue ink.
It looked incredibly ordinary, the kind of cheap trinket a parent would make for their child out of spare wood.
But as I looked closer, I noticed a tiny stabilization rune carved directly into the underbelly of the wooden bird. As soon as I saw it, a grin spread across my face.
I had found it. Black didn’t just send his daughter here; he was actively monitoring this specific location using custom-made artifacts to ensure her safety while he was away dealing with the darker parts of his life.
"Let’s go, Viora," I murmured and gently tugged her hand to turn her around before the elderly teacher could notice us standing near the fence. "We have what we came for."
