Chapter 104: Pouring Rain

When I denied helping her, Viora didn’t argue. Instead, she raised her hand and began to walk her two fingers across my arm, moving them up and down over the fabric of my shirt.

"Please," she murmured. "Just a few sips, Woo Jin. My tongue really hurts."

Giving in, I guided the rim of the cup to her lips. After taking a sip, she smiled and spoke up. "Did you add extra sugar?"

"Just enough so you wouldn’t complain about the bitterness."

After helping her with it, I set the cup back down on the tray, making sure it was far out of her accidental reach. "Now, lie down and rest. You must have spent way too much energy trying to sense things under the water."

Viora moved and slid backward onto the mattress, but her hand never left my arm.

As her back hit the pillows, her fingers slipped down to my wrist and grabbed my hand.

"Don’t go yet," she said as her eyelids slowly fluttered. "Stay until I fall asleep. Just a little bit."

Seeing her like this, it was almost impossible to connect this girl with someone who had driven Trion onto his knees.

"Fine," I whispered. "Only until you sleep."

At my words, Viora immediately curled her body closer to mine and wrapped both of her hands around my arm.

Gradually, the room fell into deep silence. The only sound was the distant sound of rain beginning to patter against the glass windows of the villa.

I kept my left hand still inside her grasp, while my right hand drifted toward the zippered pocket of my pants. I pulled out the old paper the Mermaid Queen had given me.

I stared at the unreadable and infinitely shifting symbols in the dim light of the bedside lamp.

’To survive the absolute end, the flesh must be shared, and the soul must be consumed...’

A deep frown appeared on my forehead.

’A world-altering scenario,’ I thought. ’If collecting all five pieces triggers something massive, I need to know exactly what kind of mess I am walking into.’

"It is raining?" Suddenly, Viora turned her head toward the window and asked. And before I could reply, she got off the bed and walked to the window.

’What is she going to do?’ I thought while watching her grab the window and open it wide.

Instantly, the droplets of rain began pouring in and fell onto her face and arms. Soon, she was drenched again.

’She doesn’t plan on catching a cold, does she?’

Who knows why I did that, but I also walked closer to the window and stood beside her. Now both of us were soaked a bit with rain.

Viora held her hand outside the window and smiled when the cold droplets landed on her skin.

Still, there was something missing. If I think about it, this must be the first rain she can physically enjoy. So, she should be able to do that to its fullest.

"Come here."

I grabbed Viora’s wrist and led her to the roof of the villa, where there was open space to get completely showered with rain.

The droplets were falling down across the concrete roof of the villa and were faintly blurring the distant lights of the city.

Standing near the top of the stairwell, I watched Viora.

She moved right in the middle of the roof, and her face was tilted directly up toward the dark sky.

"Wow," she let out and stretched her arms wide with her palms turned upward to catch the falling drops. Then, she began to spin.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

Every time her bare feet stomped onto the floor, small drops of water splattered wildly around her ankles.

Right now, she looked like a kid. There was no hesitation in her movements. She was just... excited.

Watching her from the shelter of the doorway, a sudden urge appeared in my chest.

I wanted to step out there with her. I wanted to throw away the lingering stress of the system quests, the creepy prophecy from the Mermaid Queen, and the constant fear of failing to protect her.

But I hesitated and didn’t even move from my spot. Acting like a carefree person running around in the rain just didn’t sit well with me since I had so much on my mind.

Suddenly, Viora stopped spinning and her head snapped directly toward my position.

"Woo Jin," she called out in a somewhat loud voice. "Why are you just standing there?"

"Someone needs to make sure you don’t catch a fever," I responded and crossed my arms over my chest to maintain my composure. "You just took a shower, Viora. Get back inside before you start freezing."

Instead of listening to me, a mischievous smile spread across her lips. It was the exact expression she wore right before doing something completely reckless.

Before I could even take a step backward to retreat down the stairs, she moved, and within a fraction of a second, she closed the gap between us.

Splash!

Her hands shot forward and wrapped tightly around my wrists.

"Hey—"

With a sudden yank, she pulled me out into the open.

The rain hit my face instantly as my clothes instantly soaked and clung heavily to my shoulders.

"Viora, let go."

"No," she denied.

She didn’t let go of my wrists. Instead, she slid her palms down until her fingers locked tightly between mine. Then, she took a step backward, dragging me along with her into the center of the rooftop where the water was pooling around our feet.

"Spin with me," she demanded.

"I am not going to spin like a child," I replied while squinting my eyes against the droplets running down my forehead.

"Just once."

With that, she leaned her weight back and began to move in a wide circle, which forced my body to follow her momentum.

At first, my steps were stiff and clumsy, and my shoes were dragging against the wet concrete as I tried to maintain balance. But Viora’s rhythm was unlike mine. She guided my movements effortlessly and balanced our weight through our locked hands.

Gradually, the resistance in me melted away. I stopped trying to pull back. We didn’t stop even after a bit of time; we just swayed slightly in the middle of the roof as the heavy downpour continued to drench us completely from head to toe.

Her short hair was completely flattened against her skull, but she looked happier than I had ever seen her before.

"See?" she whispered while moving her feet. "It’s not that bad."

"Yeah," I murmured, looking up at the dark sky where the lonely moon was half-hidden behind the storm clouds.

"IT’S NOT BAD AT ALL."
