Chapter 65: [Bonus 10] Apparently, Maximus Was Already Being Recruited.

"Mana is the fundamental energy said to have existed since the beginning of time. Some believe it is the driving force behind every life while others theorise that it was introduced later into what was once a perfectly normal world."

Maximus adjusted his glasses as he taught both Basic Mana Theory and Basic Awakened Guide.

"But nobody knows for sure. All the greatest minds have discovered so far is that mana holds the key to our evolution. Mana is the key that unlocks the hidden potential of one’s soul."

"Talents themselves only manifest when mana influences the soul. But using mana was once considered incredibly risky and difficult, back before the Gods bestowed us with the technique to refine mana cores."

"But mana didn’t just bring blessings, it also brought curses. Just like us, many other creatures were blessed by mana and evolved into beasts. Some remained mindless while others became even more intelligent."

He continued in the same monotonous tone.

"Still, every coin has two sides. Just as mana exists, so does another force, a force of destruction that we recognise as Chaos. It is the force that seeks to infiltrate our world. Although mana and the will of the world defend against it, Chaos seeps through wherever those defenses weaken and in such places, Dungeons, Rifts, Towers, and Zones appear."

His voice lowered slightly.

"Dungeons, Rifts and Towers connect our world to other dimensions where monsters born of Chaos, different from beasts, reside. Zones, on the other hand, are places where historical projections come to life under the influence of Chaos."

"Unlike Dungeons, Rifts, and Towers, where you simply slay monsters to clear them or continue advancing, Zones require you to take part in a historical projection and see it through to completion."

I barely suppressed my yawn while listening to his boring-as-hell lecture.

First of all, many of the things this bastard said barely held any truth. As if those Gods had anything to do with mana or the evolution of sentient species as a whole.

Hell, they had been part of our species long before they ever became Gods.

Secondly, he didn’t know the first thing about teaching.

He was simply reciting whatever was written in a plain textbook, something the students could have read themselves without his help and even then, most of what he was blabbering about was something many people already knew.

This bastard just wanted to bore the nobles enough to redirect their frustration towards Lily, claiming he was forced to teach such basic material because a commoner had made it into the World-Class division.

It seemed that even after directing most of his resentment toward me, his hatred towards commoners still ran far too deep.

Naturally, Lily didn’t give a fuck.

The only reason she had even come here was to slaughter her noble classmates... or maybe even the commoners too.

So, it didn’t really matter to her who resented her.

As my Chaos Mind activated in full, I let my thoughts drift. Soon enough the class finally came to an end without much trouble.

Honestly, with the angry glare this bastard had shot me the moment he entered, I was certain he was going to pull something.

It seemed I had merely been overthinking it.

...or so I thought.

Before I could even celebrate that realization, his voice rang out once again.

"And before I leave, I have something important to announce. Exactly a month from now, I requested the academy’s permission for a special learning program I had been working on."

His warm smile widened ever so slightly.

"Thankfully, the Principal has finally approved it. As such, I shall be overseeing a training exercise for all the World-Class students inside a real-life Dungeon. It will also work as an end to Basic Awakened Guide course as you can apply everything you learned in real life problems."

His eyes paused on me.

"Don’t worry, though. I will personally make sure none of you are harmed during the exercise but I sure do hope all of you can learn a great deal from it."

... yeah, this bastard is definitely planning to do something during that test, isn’t he?

Still, seeing him act like that only made my smile widen because a dungeon seemed like the perfect place to dispose of his body.

Although he was a rank above me, his talent was absolutely shit, so I wasn’t remotely worried. I just hoped I could copy Seles’s Talent and maybe even Ruan’s, before then.

Maximus didn’t stay in the classroom after making the announcement and left after one last warm glance at me.

I met his eyes and even gave him a little wave before getting up from my desk. The next two classes would be held elsewhere.

Meanwhile, within a shadowy alley in the grand city of Arcanum, a group of seven figures wearing purple cloaks stood in a circle, the darkness concealing their faces completely as leading them was a man wearing a crimson coloured cloak.

"Alan died yesterday." One of them muttered. "Has someone already become suspicious of our presence?"

"It doesn’t matter at this point." The crimson-cloaked figure slowly raised his head. "We continue as we have been doing."

He looked toward the distant academy, barely visible beyond the rooftops.

"The number of believers is still far too small."

"Start contacting more students... and even members of the staff if possible. We need to increase the number of our Lord’s followers before their advent. They may call us Devil Contractors but show them that the ones they worship as the Orthodox Gods are the true devils."

One of the contractors hesitated.

"Academy staff won’t be easy to approach."

The leader chuckled.

"You would be surprised. The easiest people to corrupt are not the weak but the ones who believe the world owes them something."

"...I already have someone in mind."

"Professor Maximus von Starforge." The leader’s smile widened beneath the hood. "And unlike the others, he has already taken the first step toward us."
