Chapter 62: [Bonus 7] Everything Was Going According to Plan... Until Lily Arrived.
The night passed without much trouble and the nnext day arrived quickly. After finishing my morning routine and getting dressed, I left my room immediately.
Liana was already waiting for me in the living room with breakfast prepared.
"So, how was your first day at the academy?" I asked with a small smile while eating breakfast.
"It went well, Young Master. Although we only had two classes, I learned a lot from them." Her expression barely changed as she replied.
"Good." I nodded. "Do let me know if someone tries to bully you or anything, alright?"
"And apply for a separate dorm for yourself. As a student you are eligible for a dorm and you don’t need to stay in the maid’s quarters anymore."
For the first time, her composed expression wavered ever so slightly.
"But what about your meals, Young Master?" She asked quietly.
"Don’t worry about that." I waved it off. "I can take care of myself and I can always call you if I need something."
"For now, focus on getting stronger." I looked at her for a second. "I don’t need a someone weak as my subordinate."
Honestly, it was better for me to live alone considering the things I would be doing because things would only become uselessly complicated if she stayed with me even if she wasn’t the type to ask many questions.
After having some more small talk with her, I was done with my breakfast as I left my apartment.
***
The floor assigned to me had three student apartments but still the hallway still felt eerily quiet as I made my way to the mana lift and pressed the button for the ground floor.
As soon as I reached the ground floor, a grand lobby greeted me.
Many of the world-class students were already making their way toward the classrooms while others sat across the lounge chatting with one another.
I tried looking for Lily but she didn’t seem to be there. InsteadI found someone else, someone standing alone at the edge of the lobby with an annoyed expression.
Seles.
I walked toward her with a calm smile on my face.,
"Good morning, Princess Seles."
I said, giving her a small wave.
My mind had been a mess since yesterday as I constantly thought about how to make her rely on me so I could copy her Talent but honestly, I still couldn’t find a way.
She was stubborn, intelligent and I was sure if I tried to manipulate her or put on an act, there was a high chance she would see right through it.
But I had an idea and for that and for it to work I needed some of her trust before the end of next week.
She didn’t respond, ignoring me completely but I didn’t give up and continued.
"I believe we got off on the wrong foot, Princess. I do not expect you to believe me but I truly wasn’t the one who committed that crime. If you want, I can even show you proof... in private."
The moment she heard those words, she finally turned toward me.
"Proof? What kind of proof could someone like you possibly have? And why does it even matter if I misunderstood you? It’s not like you’ll be hanged just because I think you’re guilty."
She still hadn’t dropped her guard.
I deliberately lowered my voice.
"I have watched you since childhood, Princess. Every time there was a gathering and a banquet, everyone focused on Prince Aurelion but my eyes were always drawn to you. Back then, I was a complete mess, living in darkness... and you were like a light during those days."
I continued.
"Looking at you back then was what gave me the strength to keep going and even when I was accused of a crime I didn’t commit, those brief memories of you reminded me never to give up."
"I never spoke to you or anyone back then but I always hoped that once the academy started... I could become your friend."
I let out a faint, bitter smile.
"...But seeing you look at me with such cold and accusatory eyes... It truly hurts. So even though I promised never to show this proof to anyone... I am willing to break that promise."
I met her gaze.
"If it’s for you."
Her eyes widened for a brief moment before wavering, a faint blush spreading across her pale cheeks.
"Y-you... only looked at me?" Even her voice trembled slightly. "A-and what are you even talking about? It’s not like I care or anything but... fine! I will give you one chance to explain."
Honestly, if I hadn’t known the truth from my previous life, I might have actually believed her little tsundere act.
I had to admit, though... even after returning to the past, her acting somehow felt far more convincing than I remembered.
Or maybe...
I was the one remembering it wrong.
She didn’t wait for my reply as she walked away with swift steps, never once breaking her character.
I knew something like this wasn’t nearly enough to earn her genuine trust but who said I needed real trust? I only needed her to act as though she trusted me.
And I would say, this was a pretty good start toward that goal.
My smile widened at reaching the first milestone but before I could celebrate any further, I suddenly felt an unusually cold gaze directed at me.
I turned towards it instinctively as the sight nearly made my soul leave my body.
Standing a short distance away, just outside the mana lift, was a beautiful blonde girl, staring at me coldly.
Lily.
For a moment, her gaze reminded me of the day Lily decided to imprison me in the castle but fortunately, it lasted only an instant before her expression turned back to normal as she walked away without a word.
Watching her leave, I almost let out a sigh, hoping she didn’t misunderstand what she had seen as I started making my way toward the classroom as well.
It was going to be a long day, especially with the banquet taking place tonight and I could only hope no unnecessary and unknown variables decided to appear.
