Chapter 61: Apparently, Reincarnation Was a Curse.

I watched Rian’s receding back as he left my apartment, or maybe I should start calling him Asher now, as his status window floated before my eyes.

════〔 STATUS 〕═════

▸ NAME: ⟦ Asher Von Ironheart ⟧

▸ ROLE: ⟦ The Prisoner ⟧

▸ TALENT: ⟦ 1. Lucky Failure 2. Reincarnation 3. Absolute Focus ⟧

▸ CORE: ⟦ Tier IV Awakened ⟧

▸ NOTE:A gifted storyteller born a coward, yet blessed with a survivor’s grit and heaven’s luck. His first life ended in tragedy after he accepted a curse no human should bear. Reborn into a family of brutes with a frail body and fragmented memories, he grew into a different man while keeping the same soul. Now reunited with his other half, his soul is whole once more, and the talents of his past life have returned. Better to have him as an ally than an enemy, for even as a prisoner, fate favors him more than you. ⟧

══════════════════

▸ TALENT:

Lucky Failure – Any failure has a high chance of subtly twisting fate in his favor,

Reincarnation – Upon death, he is reborn into a new life while retaining the memories of previous life.

Absolute Focus – By entering a state of complete concentration, he dramatically heightens his perception, precision, and reaction speed, shutting out all distractions. ⟧

══════════════════

It had barely been half an hour since he woke up and just as the status window had shown, his soul had completely merged with its other half.

Since Talents were manifestations of the soul, he had regained both Talents from his previous life but one thing surprised me.

His Reincarnation hadn’t been consumed like my Regression.

That meant it could still be used again.

The real question was...

How many times?

Did it have no limit at all?

Or was there simply a condition I didn’t know about?

I even wondered if this was why the status window had labeled Reincarnation a curse rather than a blessing.

Naturally, I shrugged the thought away.

Whatever the answer was, it was his problem, not mine, at least as long as he didn’t become my enemy.

But then another thought crossed my mind.

What if I used [[Eye of Usurper]] on him? Could I actually copy the Reincarnation Talent he possessed?

The idea was undeniably tempting but in the end, I dismissed even that thought.

Why would I want to start my life all over again from scratch?

I would much rather become immortal in this life as Zenith than begin everything anew, especially when I didn’t even know how many years it would take for me to reincarnate or whether it would even be in this world.

If something like a multiverse truly existed, I could very well end up somewhere else entirely. Hell, I might not even be reincarnated as a human. What if I ended up as some random bear or worse, an elf.

So, copying that Talent actually did sound like a curse. As for his other Talents, they were impressive but not overwhelmingly broken.

After waking up, Asher had honored his promise and agreed to serve as my subordinate for the next five years, helping me whenever I required his assistance during that time.

He didn’t really have anything else of value to offer back then, so I settled for his service instead and since the agreement was sealed through a soul contract, I wasn’t worried about betrayal in the slightest.

He also told me why he had murdered that guy and that was another thing that surprised me.

According to Asher, the man had been a Devil Contractor, while Asher himself worked for the Awakened Alliance.

Naturally, I knew exactly what both of those terms meant.

The Awakened Alliance was, in a way, a regulatory body that operated across all three continents ever since the peace between them, managing the awakened while keeping the demons, the long-standing enemies of every race, at bay.

They also handled kidnapping.

Well, they preferred calling it mandatory military conscription, drafting the surplus children of noble and commoner families with more than three sons into the army in the name of service.

I was slightly surprised that Asher had been conscripted by them but it did explain his brutally efficient fighting style and why he acted so cold.

Though, after merging with his other half, he had become noticeably more cheerful.

As for the Devil Contractors, they were a completely different breed of bastards.

Unlike demons, who could at least be reasoned with, Devils were beings of pure malice. They made no distinction between friend or foe, not even among their own kind and sought nothing but chaos.

They didn’t really follow the conventional ranking system but the strongest among them were easily comparable to the Gods. Fortunately, Devils of that rank rarely bothered interfering with matters within the First Ring of the Great Sea.

Still, why hadn’t I heard of any Devil Contractors or even Asher during my previous time at the

academy?

Were they here back then as well, simply hidden in the shadows? Or was this another butterfly effect I had caused without realizing it? Or did Asher simply die long before our paths could have crossed in my last life?

I couldn’t tell.

Aside from that, Asher had mentioned one more group he had been sent to keep an eye on. Fortunately, that group existed in the previous timeline as well.

The Resistance.

The bastards who slaughtered nobles in the name of creating an equal society...

...and the very same bastards who had turned my Lily into the person she was today.

So many troubles to deal with already.

With a quiet sigh, I leaned back against the couch as the mana bracelet around my wrist buzzed softly.

"What is it now?"

I channeled a small amount of mana into it curiously as a translucent hologram immediately sprang to life above the bracelet.

[ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE STUDENT COUNCIL PRESIDENT]

As I looked at the announcement about the upcoming banquet, another sigh escaped my lips.

Somehow, I had a bad feeling about this banquet.
