Chapter 60: [Bonus 6] The Other Half of This Great Personality.
Ever since childhood, Asher had always been exhausted, even when he barely did any work. His skin was pale and as he grew older, his features became increasingly feminine.
His parents thought he might be ill, while even his cousins bullied him relentlessly. As the eldest son of a noble family renowned for their overwhelming physical strength, Asher had been mocked since childhood.
He tried his best.
He ran until his legs gave out and trained until his body could endure no more, hoping to earn his parents’ acknowledgement but he never could.
But everything changed when he awakened at the age of sixteen. Along with mana and his Talent, something that had been suppressed deep within him for his own sake also awakened.
The memories of his previous life.
They were only fragments and they were also the reason his body had always felt so weak and exhausted.
He didn’t know why they had been sealed.
Maybe it had been to protect his young mind from being overwhelmed or maybe, it had been for another reason entirely.
But even then, the Talent he awakened was still considered pitiful by his family’s standards.
So when the mandatory military conscription reached their household, despite being the eldest son and despite barely being sixteen years old, Asher was the one chosen to serve in the Awakened Alliance’s army.
Even with the memories of his previous life as Rian, Asher had never truly been a warrior but the battlefield cared little for such things.
Thrown onto the border to the demon realm, he was forced to fight day after day just to survive, blood staining the hands that had never before been stained by another’s life.
There had been countless times when he simply wanted everything to end but whenever those thoughts surfaced, the hazy memory of an idiotic man, his best friend from his previous life, Auremont, would echo in his mind.
"Survive, Rian."
So, he endured and only after turning eighteen was he finally released from military service. Not because he had been discharged but because he had been entrusted with an even greater mission, one that only someone his age could carry out.
To infiltrate the Arcane Academy and quietly keep an eye on everything.
According to a prophet of the Awakened Alliance, something significant was fated to happen within the Arcanum in the near future.
Contractors of the Underworld’s Devils had been unusually active around the academy and alongside them, another dangerous organization had also begun making its move.
The Resistance.
Asher’s mission was simple.
Observe and report anything suspicious to the Alliance the moment he discovers it.
There were many senior members stationed around the Arcanum but his job was to investigate from inside and eliminate whatever threats he could within the limits of his own strength.
Right as he was carrying out his mission, after the end of his first day at the academy, he entered the commercial district, hoping to grab something to eat. Instead, he came across a Devil Contractor attempting to sacrifice another student in a dark alley.
Driven by the instincts he had forged in this life, Asher lunged forward without hesitation and saved the victim before ordering him to leave, then swiftly killed the contractor.
But just as he was about to contact the Alliance to handle the cleanup, another person appeared. Pressed for time, Asher didn’t bother listening to a single word and attacked immediately.
But that boy was like a phantom.
He weaved through every one of Asher’s attacks before effortlessly striking him with attacks that barely matched his fragile body.
Now, as darkness completely surrounded him, only one thought remained in Asher’s mind.
Am I dead?
Before he could think about it any longer, another familiar voice echoed from somewhere nearby as the darkness immediately lit up.
"No, you are not dead, the other half of this Great Personality." The voice continued. "We are simply within the space between our souls while they slowly merge into one once again."
Along with the voice, the transparent silhouette of a man with black hair and crimson eyes gradually formed before him.
"How are you already here? Weren’t I supposed to pick you up at the Ruinbringer Treasury?"
Although Asher remembered very little of his previous life, he did remember placing a fragment of his soul inside a sword before sending it to the Ruinbringer Treasury.
...Wait.
That sword the boy had been using...
Wasn’t it the very same—
Only then did the scattered pieces finally click together.
But, why was it broken?
"Many things happened because of those reasons, this Great Personality had to ask the great sir for a favor and search for you instead." Rian puffed out his chest proudly. "And by some stroke of luck, we finally found you here at the academy."
Looking at his older self, Asher narrowed his eyes.
"And what exactly did you offer him in return?"
Asher already knew how this era worked.
Even parents sold their own children for personal gain, so, he wasn’t naïve enough to believe that a complete stranger, even if he happened to be his descendant, would do something like this for free.
"You needn’t worry about that." Rian smiled mysteriously. "More importantly... you will know soon enough when we merge."
A smug grin spread across Rian’s face as he extended his hand. After a brief hesitation, Asher reached out as well and the moment their hands touched, the two fragments of his soul finally began to merge once more.
A moment later, the process was complete as Asher slowly opened his eyes in the real world, his gaze immediately settled on the boy sitting across from him, watching him with an amused smile.
A smile gradually appeared on Asher’s own face.
"This Great Personality has finally become whole, oh great sir." He bowed his head slightly. "Thank you for your assistance and as per our soul contract... I shall fulfill the conditions we agreed upon."
As soon as he said those words, the smile on Zenith’s face widened even more.
"Great."
