Chapter 54: [Bonus 1] Attendance, Threats, and Childhood Trauma.

Ruan swept her gaze across the classroom and before anyone could voice their complaints, she spoke again.

"Now, now, before anyone gets mad, let me tell you all something very important."

"Disrespect of any kind won’t be tolerated in my classroom." Her gaze suddenly locked onto one particular student. "Especially you."

She pointed toward the giant seated near the middle rows.

"What the fuck have you been laughing at this whole time? Do you find my height amusing? Should I chop your limbs off so we can stand at the same eye level?"

Her voice remained completely cold even as she casually floated above the podium.

"As your homeroom teacher, I expect every single one of you to maintain a certain level of discipline and respect me to the utmost."

"First of all, I don’t give a fuck what country, kingdom, empir or fief your daddy rules. As a professor of the Arcanum, vested with the authority of the Great Leviathan, everyone within this Academic City stands on equal footing."

"Secondly, all of you are adults. You have reached the age of eighteen with minds capable of making your own decisions, so don’t expect to be treated like children."

"We have already signed contracts with every noble family represented here. So don’t worry. No matter what happens inside the Arcanum, your parents won’t be coming to save you."

She continued in the same tone.

"Everything that happens within this Academic City stays within this Academic City. And none of you are permitted to carry your grudges outside these walls or use your family’s influence to take revenge on another student."

She paused for a brief moment before continuing.

"So if I catch any of you snickering behind my back, don’t blame me for being rude. Of course, you are more than welcome to file a complaint with the Principal."

She shrugged.

"But knowing that old woman, she won’t give a single shit about any of you. So if I were you, I would focus on getting into my good graces instead."

"Is that clear?"

Her quiet voice echoed throughout the vast lecture hall along with the pressure of an Exalted Rank, forcing every student to nod almost instinctively.

Satisfied with the response, Ruan gave a small nod of her own.

"Good."

"Now that we have gotten the formalities out of the way, let’s talk about the year ahead."

She casually floated above the podium, lazily waving a hand as the piece of chalk behind her rose into the air once again and began writing across the blackboard on its own.

"As you have probably already noticed, the Arcanum is divided into multiple classes. Each class is granted different privileges and luxuries."

"But don’t get too attached to them because they are all temporary. Every six months, at the end of each semester, the academy conducts class-rearrangement examinations."

"The slackers get demoted and the worthy climb higher."

She snapped her fingers, causing another line of chalk to begin writing.

"Your curriculum consists of both mandatory and elective courses. Mandatory classes are taught separately according to your assigned class. Elective courses, however, are attended by students from every class based on their chosen subjects."

"You have until the end of this week to submit your elective selections to the academy staff and if you fail to do so, you will be penalized."

Finally, she folded her arms.

"If you run into any problems, you can come to me as I am your homeroom professor and besides handling your class, I will also be personally responsible for your basic physical training for the first few months since we still haven’t found a replacement for the previous one."

She stared blankly into the air for a few moments, as though trying to remember whether she had forgotten something from the orientation script.

After a while, an annoyed expression spread across her face.

"Tch."

"That’s all."

"Read the orientation handbook if you want to know where all the important buildings are, the class schedules, training halls and all that other shit."

"Understood?"

Her pressure swept across the entire classroom once again as the students immediately nodded. Some enthusiastically while most reluctantly.

"Great. Looks like I have done a spectacular job."

"Since it’s your first day, there will only be two lectures. This one and the Basic Awakened Guide."

With those words, she pulled out a register several times larger than herself and casually flipped it open before beginning to call out the students’ names one by one.

***

Watching her be as rude as ever, I couldn’t help but click my tongue.

Tsk...

Still the same as always.

This was exactly why I hated this psychopathic woman. She was one of the most talented people across the three continents.

A brilliant superhuman, an outstanding prankster and an absolutely terrible professor.

This damned woman had been especially ruthless toward me in my previous life because she had taken it upon herself to "fix" my world-renowned weakest physique in my last life.

According to her, there was no such thing as a weak body. Only weak training.

I could still vividly remember the days she chased me around the entire academy after transforming into an elephant, forcing me to run as though my life depended on it despite my already broken body.

So yes...

Naturally, I hated her.

But at the same time, even I couldn’t deny how deeply she cared for every single one of her students.

When the secret organization attacked during the mid-term examinations, she had been the very first person to throw herself into the battle. Not to defeat the enemy but to make sure every one of her students survived.

As my gaze settled on her, [[Eye of Usurper]] activated on its own, a familiar status window unfolding before my eyes.

════〔 STATUS 〕═════

▸ NAME: ⟦ Ruan Ashcroft ⟧

▸ Role: ⟦ None ⟧

▸ TALENT: ⟦ 1. Blink 2. Audience Required ⟧

▸ Core: ⟦ Tier III Exalted ⟧

▸ Note : ⟦ A rare shapeshifter and a prankster through and through. Feared as much for her foul mouth as for her overwhelming strength and ruthless methods. Do not let her cheerful antics fool you, she wouldn’t hesitate to stab you through the heart while wearing the face of someone you love if you get on her bad side.

I focused slightly onto her talents as another small window appeared before me.

▸ TALENTS: ⟦ 1. BlinkInstantly teleport a short distance. 2. Audience Required — The stronger the emotions your audience feels toward you, the greater the increase to your overall strength. ⟧

This was another function of the [[Eye of Usurper]] I hadn’t even known existed but I certainly wasn’t complaining.

There was no way even I could remember or deduce the effects of every Talent that existed in the world just by their names.

A concise summary like this was far more useful than digging through endless information.

Looking at the brief descriptions of her Talents, a smile slowly spread across my face because she had already secured one of the five Soul Engraving slots available to me at my current rank.

"Zenith von Ruinbringer!"

Her voice snapped me out of my thoughts as she called my name.

I looked up and smiled.

"Present, Ma’am."

The academy had finally begun.
