Chapter 55: [Bonus 2] The Professor Had Something on His Face (It Was His Ego): Speedrunning Academic Misconduct.
Lily quietly focused on the ongoing lecture.
It had only been a few minutes since the previous class ended with that strangely rude homeroom professor leaving after one final warning, leaving the students with a brief period of peace before the next lecture began.
Lily had already done her homework on all of the academy staff.
The Arcanum rotated its professors every year, making it impossible to predict who would be assigned as a homeroom professor to which class as the decision depended entirely on the whims of the academy’s principal.
But her organization had narrowed the possibilities down to three likely candidates and out of all three, Ruan Ashcroft was the worst possible outcome.
I need to report this to Him.
The thought barely passed her mind as she sensed the shadow beneath her stir again.
Rwar had never been this restless before but ever since the classes had begun, she had barely remained still and Lily already knew why.
It was because of the boy sitting beside her.
The strange boy who smiled at her for no apparent reason and the same boy who somehow knew of Rwar’s existence hidden within her shadow.
Rwar was no ordinary summon, she was an ancient existence imperceptible even to the strongest Transcendents and also Lily’s very first contracted spirit, summoned during her awakening itself and yet, this boy kept noticing her presence despite her trying to hide herself.
Lily felt wary and curious at the same time but still, she remained silent because drawing attention to herself now would only put her mission at risk.
Still, every time her eyes drifted toward that strange boy beside her, only a single question echoed through her mind.
Who... are you, really?
Zenith von Ruinbringer.
There wasn’t a single noble across the three continents who hadn’t heard his name at least once.
He was the laughingstock of noble society.
The only heir of a Great House to fail his Awakening at the age of sixteen and if that wasn’t enough, he was infamous for his rude behavior.
Recently, he was even accused of stealing the undergarments of a queen and although the Goddess of Love and Passion herself had proven his innocence according to the Holy Empire, many nobles from the other two continents believed he only escaped the punishment because of his family’s influence.
After all, his father stood only a step away from the Transcendent Rank.
But even after reading the files her organization had on the high nobles who would be attending the academy, she had dismissed him as nothing more than a fool and after watching his behavior today, she had only become even more convinced of her assumption.
Bu, she also understood one thing.
He wasn’t nearly as simple as he looked because behind that carefree smile and those mischievous eyes, she sensed a painfully familiar emotion, one she had seen only once before.
Almost instinctively, Lily clasped her hands together as fragments of old memories resurfaced, causing her fingers to feel cold ever so slightly.
At the same time, Rwar’s gentle voice echoed within her mind.
(Are you alright, Lily?)
(If that boy is giving you too much trouble...)
(...Should I just eliminate him tonight?)
Lily froze as an unfamiliar mixture of anger and sorrow erupted inside her at her own summon for suggesting that.
She couldn’t understand why she felt that way but a moment later, she quietly shook her head.
No...
Let’s keep an eye on him a little longer.
He might prove useful to our plans.
Her gaze drifted toward the white-haired boy once more and watching the carefree smile on his face, the same question surfaced in her mind once again.
Who are you... Zenith von Ruinbringer?
...And why does my heart feel so heavy whenever I look at you?

Soon enough, the first proper lecture of the semester began.
Basic Awakened Guide.
A professor with neatly combed brown hair and a well trimmed beard walked into the classroom and without wasting a single moment, he placed his notes on the podium and began.
"Good morning, class. I am Maximus and I will be in charge of the Basic Awakened Guide for your class. Though I must say, I never imagined I would one day be teaching this subject to the World Class."
A warm smile spread across the professor’s face.
"After all, this is merely a temporary course designed to help commoner students catch up on the fundamental knowledge that noble children have been taught since childhood."
He clasped his hands behind his back.
"However...For the first time in the Arcanum’s history, a commoner has qualified for the World Class. So this lecture has been made mandatory for everyone in this class as well."
The moment those words left his mouth, the gazes of the high nobles shifted toward Lily, their annoyance at being forced to attend a lecture they had long since mastered was written plainly across their faces.
Lily, however, didn’t care about them at all. Instead, her focus was on the malice hidden beneath the professor’s warm smile.
She knew he had done it deliberately and she had been warned about this scenario long before arriving at the academy.
He was Maximus von Starforge, the founder of the Noble Supremacy Faction within the Arcanum when he was a student and one of the most influential professors in the academy currently.
And he was said to hate commoners with his very being. So, it wasn’t surprising that he hated her already and she was prepared to endure that hate for completion of her mission.
"Excuse me, sir."
But before the professor could continue, an amused voice rang out from beside Lily. Every head in the classroom turned toward the speaker.
Zenith von Ruinbringer.
A faint frown appeared on Maximus’s face at being interrupted, though the warm smile never left it.
"What is it?"
"There seems to be something on your face, sir."
The entire classroom immediately looked toward Maximus. He was known for always maintaining his impeccable appearance as he instinctively pulled out a small mirror and looked at his face.
There was nothing there but just as he was about to speak...
"Oh, never mind, sir." Zenith smiled apologetically. "It seems I made a mistake. My eyes were a little blurry."
For a single second, the entire classroom fell silent before an uncontrollable laughter erupted from every corner of the room.
Maximus’s smile finally cracked, his expression twisting with barely concealed anger and just like that, everyone had forgotten about Lily at least for this moment.
But at the same time, Zenith had just made himself another enemy. Not that he cared because the said enemy was simply another name on the list of people he intended to get rid of sooner or later anyway.
