Chapter 53: Our Homeroom Teacher Was a Gorilla... Until She Wasn’t.

"Hello. Nice to meet you."

I extended my hand toward her.

"I am Zenith."

"...And I came to save you."

"What do you mean?"

Her crimson eyes narrowed ever so slightly as I felt her shadow shift ever so slightly.

"Well..." I shrugged. "Isn’t it lonely sitting here all by yourself? So I came to save you from that loneliness."

She didn’t meet my hands but I didn’t care and pulled out the chair beside hers and sat down. I didn’t bother saying anything else for now because at this point in time, I knew exactly what she was like.

Instead my gaze shifted across the classroom.

The classroom was like a theatre with rows of polished desks curving around a spacious platform at the front. Sunlight streamed through towering arched windows while hidden enchantments kept the room cool despite the hundreds of students gathered inside.

I could hear countless conversations drifting through the hall.

Some cadets eagerly discussed what kind of professors the Arcanum would assign to them while others were simply exchanging their names and family titles and I could even see a few already burying themselves in the orientation booklets, probably to decide which elective courses to choose.

Even amidst the constant chatter, the noise coming from one corner of the classroom stood out.

Aurelion.

That bastard, being as popular as ever, had already gathered a crowd around him. Several young noblewomen were eagerly trying to strike up conversations, while Seles, seated beside him, wore the same fake smile as always, probably plotting yet another one of her schemes.

Only two other groups within the classroom rivaled the size of his.

But before I could observe anything more, the towering double doors of the classroom swung open. The chatter gradually died down as dozens of heads turned toward the entrance.

A crimson mist drifted through the doorway as though it possessed a life of its own and when it finally dispersed, a figure was already walking toward the elevated platform at the front of the classroom, dressed in an elegant black suit and skirt.

Her appearance was enough to steal the breath of almost every person in the room. Not because she possessed breathtaking beauty but because she was the complete opposite of what anyone had expected.

Because the professor...

Was a gorilla.

A towering crimson-furred gorilla wearing an elegant black suit and skirt.

"What the hell?"

"How the fuck is a gorilla supposed to be our homeroom teacher?"

"This has to be a joke."

"She kinda... looks cute though."

"Bro... are you high?"

"...I meant her fashion sense, bro."

"..."

"Get a life."

"Why, God? Why?!"

"Why couldn’t you give us a beautiful, hot homeroom teacher instead?"

The classroom immediately erupted into loud chatter. Some cursed their luck, others looked on with curiosity and a few particularly strange ones... were thinking about something else entirely.

And honestly I didn’t blame them either because I had been quite surprised in my last life as well.

Although the world was vast enough to contain countless sentient species resembling ordinary animals, gorillas unfortunately weren’t one of them.

So, it was common knowledge that Gorillas couldn’t talk. At least, not without certain special circumstances unknown to those living within the First Ring of the Great Sea.

Just then, her loud voice snapped me out of my thoughts, drawing my attention back to her.

"Attention, class!" She spoke again, her calm and refined voice completely at odds with her beastly appearance."I have noticed... quite a variety of reactions from all of you."

She adjusted her glasses before continuing.

"How terribly racist."

"Isn’t it common courtesy to greet your homeroom teacher before gossiping about them? Is that what they teach to high-nobles across all three continents nowadays?"

At the sound of her cold and unwavering voice, the entire classroom fell silent, many lowering their heads in embarrassment.

Though a handful of the sharper students like Aurelion, Lily and a few others, already seemed to understand what was happening.

Before anyone could say another word, however, a soft chuckle echoed throughout the classroom, drawing everyone’s attention back to her.

A crimson mist enveloped the towering gorilla once more, its massive frame rapidly shrank, disappearing into the swirling haze until the beast was completely hidden from view as a woman’s amused voice drifted out from within the mist.

"You people are far too gullible."

A few students flinched.

"What are you, ten? To fall for something that obvious."

She laughed.

"Ahahaha! As if a gorilla would ever be your homeroom teacher."

The classroom collectively groaned as a couple of students rubbed the backs of their necks in embarrassment while others rolled their eyes.

"The next thing you know, you will believe a gorilla can teach you how to dance."

Finally the crimson mist slowly dispersed but the platform was empty and the laughter had completely stopped.

Several students frowned.

"...Where did she go?"

"Did she leave?"

"...Was there another illusion?"

A tiny sigh echoed through the room.

"Oh, for heaven’s sake..." Every student froze because the voice had come from below. "Down here."

Dozens of heads tilted downward in unison.

Standing atop the podium, no taller than a few inches, was an impossibly small woman.

Vibrant green curls cascaded down her back, framing a pair of striking golden eyes that sparkled with mischief. Tiny translucent wings rested behind her as she planted her hands on her hips, clearly unimpressed.

With a flick of her wrist, a piece of chalk floated into the air, dancing across the blackboard, writing in large elegant letters.

Ruan Ashcroft.

The moment the name appeared, every whisper vanished as dozens of eyes widened in recognition because there wasn’t a soul across the Three Continents who didn’t know that name.

Even those who had been laughing moments ago suddenly looked uncomfortable.

The Cruel Prankster.

That’s what they called her.

Known for belonging to the rare and notoriously mischievous race of pixies, she was infamous even among her own kind.

Her enemies called her the cruel prankster of them all, not because her tricks were harmless but because she delighted in taking the appearance of those her victims loved most before killing them.

And she was also one of the very few people I had truly hated in my previous life.
