Chapter 49: Our Reunion Beyond the Timelines.

Within moments, Nyxara unceremoniously threw me out of her shell. I landed atop the massive whale-like shell that surrounded her true body, drifting across the endless sea.

Ahead of me stretched a sprawling city but without wasting another second, I sprinted toward its heart. As the familiar sights and sounds rushed past me, old memories surfaced one after another.

The Academic City of Arcanum.

Home to hundreds of thousands of students, thousands of professors and staff and countless merchants who had built their lives within its walls, this Arcanum Academic City was completely self-sufficient, isolated from the rest of the world.

Nyxara’s colossal body never stopped wandering the Great Sea, making teleportation gates impossible since the coordinates changed with every passing moment and as a result, those who came here to study, teach or simply do business eventually made Arcanum their home.

Pushing the useless thoughts from my mind, I finally arrived before the gates of a massive circular structure standing beside the academy campus.

The Arena.

This was where the entrance examination for the new students was currently being held as my gaze shifted to my own appearance.

Honestly, I was in a terrible state for our first meeting.

Although my clothes were mostly clean, I had washed myself and changed into a fresh set before leaving the trial space, the fatigue etched across my face was impossible to hide.

Nor were the few small injuries that still lingered.

But I didn’t care.

Lily wasn’t the kind of person to judge someone by their appearance.

She was simply a lovely girl with slightly cute and slightly murderous tendencies.

More importantly, I couldn’t afford to waste even a second because if everything unfolded the same way it had in my previous timeline, that bastard would be accusing Lily of cheating as soon as her exam finished.

Without another moment of hesitation, I stepped into the arena. My eyes swept across the crowd almost instantly before they landed on her.

My Lily.

Unlike the last memory I had of her, she wasn’t covered in blood. Her expression was cold, devoid of any warmth and a cloak concealed her beautiful golden hair.

She hated it because it reminded her of her parents.

Her red lips were dry, like those of someone who hadn’t had a drop of water for days and her skin was just as pale as I remembered. Beneath the cloak, she wore a simple off-shoulder white dress as she stood within the centre of the arena in front of a golem.

Looking at her again like this, I froze for a moment. Not because I was captivated by her beauty but because the bloodied face from my previous life kept overlapping with the one before me.

For the first time in this life, a sliver of doubt crept into my heart.

What if the Lily I loved had truly died?

What if there were multiple timelines and I had abandoned the one who had loved me, believing I could simply save her in another life?

A sharp sting spread across my lips and only then did I realize I had bitten them hard enough to draw blood.

It wasn’t as though I had never considered that possibility before but everything I had learned pointed toward one conclusion.

Regression was supposed to rewind time and not send me to another timeline.

I knew that for certain.

Using the Celestial Singularity Art, I could perceive my own soul more clearly than anyone else, allowing me to understand my talents far better than others ever could.

And as though sensing the conflict and doubt within me, my [[Eye of Usurper]] activated on its own.

Its target,

Lily.

════〔 STATUS 〕═════

▸ Name: ⟦ Lillian de Crimson ⟧

▸ Role: ⟦ The Calamity of Madness

▸ Talent: ⟦ Cannot Be Viewed ⟧

▸ Core: ⟦ Tier IV Awakened ⟧

▸ Note: ⟦ Born as the princess of the strongest clan, she was raised as nothing more than a tool by the man who slaughtered her entire family. Long ago, she forgot her own roots. Hated by fate even more than the Demon King himself, she bears the role of a Calamity. Across all timelines, only a single soul of each Calamities can exist. Therefore, regardless of the flow of time, her soul remains one and the same. That does not mean her personality will be the same, so proceed with caution. She still possesses more than enough Talents to crush your pitiful physique like an ant.

"Haaa..."

Looking at the note, I couldn’t help but let out a quiet sigh as the knot that had been tightening around my heart finally unraveled.

"...So you can be wholesome sometimes after all."

My voice was barely above a whisper.

Talents were born from the soul and mine just happened to be directly connected to the Records of the World themselves.

From what little I understood about the Records, they were omniscient and utterly devoid of emotion, they were a natural phenomenon like mana itself. So I wasn’t particularly surprised that it knew about my regression or even that I had reincarnated.

Which was why I had always suspected that whenever my Talent activated, it was simply a sentient fragment of my own soul reaching into those Records to retrieve information along with the occasional sarcastic remark.

But today, it answered the one question I feared asking myself.

A small smile appeared on my face.

It seemed that, despite being a roasting bastard, it was still a part of me, a part that cared about her just as much as I did.

And perhaps the evolution hadn’t merely granted it the ability to copy Talents and maybe it had also given it deeper access to the Records themselves.

Shaking off my spiraling thoughts, I smiled before jumping over the audience railing and landing inside the arena. Several Student Council members immediately rushed over to stop me.

"Stop right there. Only new applicants are allowed beyond this point."

One of them stepped in front of me.

"I am Zenith Ruinbringer, Rodrick’s younger brother and he asked me to come. You are welcome to come along if you don’t believe me."

The moment those words left my mouth, strange expressions appeared on their faces. After all, Rodrick was a well-known noble supremacist.

Judging by the ordinary iron insignias on most of their uniforms, these members were anything but part of his little faction. And even those who seemed to have silver insignias, minor nobles, seemed conflicted.

After exchanging hesitant glances, they reluctantly stepped aside and followed after me as I continued toward the center of the arena.

Lily had already finished her match and just as I remembered, Rodrick was accusing her of cheating as my smile couldn’t help but widen.

"That’s quite the pathetic way of trying to deny reality..." I clapped slowly at his pitiful display of noble pride. "...don’t you think so, brother?"

"Zenith?! What are you doing here?"

Rodrick turned toward me instantly.

"Why else but to greet you and have a small chat, dear brother?" I replied with a mischievous smile. "After all, you did land me in quite a bit of trouble recently... you know, with what you did with Cedric and the Queen—"

Before I could finish, his expression changed immediately as he hurried over, grabbed my arm and pulled me off to the side, forcing a smile onto his face.

"What the hell are you doing?"

He whispered.

"As I said, I just came to chat. Would you prefer to do that here... or somewhere more private?"

His expression darkened even further and after a brief hesitation, he turned toward a nearby Student Council member.

"Handle things here as best you can. As you can see, I have some family matters that require my attention."

His attention had shifted completely away from Lily and onto me.

Exactly as I had intended.

As he dragged me out of the arena, my gaze shifted toward the girl who silently watched Rodrick and me without the slightest trace of emotion.

Even though there wasn’t a hint of recognition in her eyes,

... I simply smiled at her.
