Chapter 48: The Girl Who Came to Kill, Lillian Crimson.

Within an endless expanse of snow, a small girl, no older than five, lay alone at its center. Clutched tightly in her tiny hand was a single red lily, its crimson petals long since stained with blood.

Her skin had turned deathly pale. She blinked at the pale sun hanging overhead slowly as its light did nothing against the merciless cold. She couldn’t even feel the pain anymore because everything had gone numb long ago.

She wanted to close her eyes and fall asleep but every time her eyelids grew heavy, the voices of her parents along with the memory of them, drenched in blood and pushing her away from the village, replayed.

"Run..."

"Run, Lily!"

"We will find you."

"Don’t look back."

"Just keep running."

Mom

Where are you...?

Dad...

Where are you...?

She wanted to cry but no tears came as they had frozen long ago, leaving thin trails of ice beneath her eyes.

Her small legs had turned a deep shade of purple as she had twisted her ankle while running and after that, she had simply kept crawling but she didn’t even have any energy to do that anymore.

Just as the darkness was about to consume her completely, a hand reached out toward her. It was warm but its owner, however, spoke in a voice devoid of warmth.

"So... you’re the last of them?"

"How amusing."

***

Lily’s eyes snapped open.

Tch. The same dream again.

She slowly steadied her breathing before her gaze swept across her surroundings. Instinctively, she rubbed her hands together because despite the warmth filling the room, she still felt cold.

"Where... am I?"

The words slipped from her lips before her memories caught up with her.

Right... the Arcanum’s waiting room.

She had only arrived a few minutes ago after spending days crossing the Great Sea aboard a ship as Air carriers had been far beyond what she could afford.

The exhaustion from the journey had finally caught up with her and she had only meant to close her eyes for a moment but somehow, she had fallen asleep.

She glanced around the waiting room. Dozens of students, much like herself, filled the seats.

Most were commoners while some seemed to be from merchant families. Some sat in anxious silence, their hands fidgeting as they awaited their turn. Others laughed and chatted with effortless confidence, already making acquaintances before the academy had even begun.

Lily felt neither confidence nor anxiety because she had come here for a single purpose.

To kill every last person on this academic island.

She had no intention of making friends and no interest in making enemies because to her they were all...

Merely future corpses.

***

A few minutes later, her name was finally called.

The moment Lily stepped through the entrance, a vast arena unfolded before her. Rows upon rows of spectators filled the stands. Senior students, Residents of Arcanum and all watching the ongoing entrance examinations with eager excitement.

Lily pulled the hood of her cloak over her golden hair, concealing it from view. A single crimson lily was embroidered near the edge of the hood.

Her crimson eyes calmly swept across the arena.

At the center stood her opponent, a mana-powered golem. One of the academy principal’s creations, forged to withstand almost any attack below the Awakened Rank.

The examination itself was simple and that was to survive against the golem for five minutes. However, the performance during the exam determined far more than acceptance, it decided a student’s starting class.

There were five in total.

Crow Class, Wolf Class, Lion Class, Dragon Class and Phoenix Class.

From lowest to highest.

But there was an even higher class which couldn’t be entered normally.

And Lily had only one mission and that was to enter the highest possible class because that was where the greatest concentration of young high-nobles would remain until the first class reassignment examination half a year later.

With steady steps, Lily walked toward the center of the arena, stopping atop the platform assigned to her.

Waiting there was a young man wearing the Student Council uniform, his narrowed eyes lingered on her for a moment but he said nothing but he didn’t need to either because Lily understood that look all too well.

"Lillian Crimson?"

He asked, seeking confirmation.

"Yes."

She answered without hesitation.

He gave a small nod before continuing.

"The moment you indicate you are ready, the golem will begin its assault. Its strength will automatically adjust to match your current rank and if it determines that you are incapable of defending against a fatal attack, it will stop on its own."

He paused briefly before explaining the examination itself.

"Your objective is simple, survive for as long as you can. Five minutes is the minimum requirement for admission into Crow Class and surviving for ten minutes or longer guarantees placement into Phoenix Class."

He looked at her one last time.

"Do you understand?"

Lily nodded once more.

"What if someone destroys the golem?"

The Student Council member let out a quiet scoff, his pitch-black hair and immaculate uniform along with a shining gold badge made it obvious he came from a high-noble household.

He looked at her as if she had asked the most ridiculous question imaginable.

"While that’s an amusing fantasy for someone like you, if a challenger were somehow capable of destroying the golem, they would be considered for World Class."

His tone remained calm and only his eyes grew colder.

"A class reserved exclusively for the greatest talents of the current generation, the nobles who stand at the very summit."

He looked her up and down before continuing.

"No commoner has ever accomplished such a feat in the entire history of the Arcanum." His voice dropped another degree. "And it isn’t a place someone like you should even dream of reaching. So forget about impossible fantasies and focus on surviving."

Lily simply gave a small nod.

The Student Council member turned and walked toward the judging platform without another glance and the instant he stepped away, the golem activated.

Its heavy frame shot forward, its fist aimed straight at Lily but she didn’t move an inch, she didn’t even pull out any weapon and simply kept staring at the fist rushing towards her face.

But before it could come within inches of her, something pink burst out from her shadow at an incredible speed, swallowing the entire golem whole.

And then, it disappeared without a trace.

It all happened so fast that most of the audience couldn’t even understand what had happened as the deafening cheers that had filled the arena vanished in an instant.

***

The Student Council member, Rodrick, who had yet to reach the judging platform, frowned and stopped in his tracks.

What happened?

Why did everyone suddenly go quiet?

Then he felt a faint warmth from inside his pocket as his expression changed. He reached inside and pulled out a small crimson orb immediately.

It was glowing. No, it was blazing with an intensity he had never seen before as his pupils started trembling.

Impossible.

There was only one explanation for such behaviour of the controller of the golem.

The golem had been destroyed.

He turned back toward the platform he had left only a few seconds earlier, his expression twisting almost instantly.

"What kind of trick did you use?" He glared at Lily, disbelief filling his eyes. "There is no way someone like you could have done that. You must have cheated."

But before Lily could defend herself, the sound of slow clapping echoed from some distance away as an amused voice followed soon after.

"That’s quite the pathetic way of attempting to deny reality, don’t you think so, brother?"

Rodrick, the Student Council member, recognized the voice almost instantly.

How could he not?

After all, it belonged to his own brother and the one he wished to kill more than anyone since childhood as his expression twisted even further.

"Zenith?! What are you doing here?"
