Chapter 423: Chapter 423: More Frightening Than the White Moonlight Is the White Moonlight Who Has Died
The night was deep.
A sedan with military license plates stopped at the graveyard entrance.
Wesley Yates stepped out of the car holding a bouquet of lilies, adjusting his collar with a hint of nervousness, as if he was going to meet his lover and not to pay respects.
The guard wanted to accompany him, but Wesley politely declined.
"Thank you for bringing me here. Just wait for me here. I want to see her alone."
The guard hesitated, "Elder Yates, my duty is to ensure your safe return..."
Wesley smiled weakly, seeing through his thoughts.
"Don’t worry, I won’t do anything rash. I still have a daughter and two adorable grandchildren."
The guard wanted to say more, but Wesley had already begun walking inside.
He could only make a call to report the situation to Felix Kendall.
After listening, Felix was silent for a moment before he instructed in a low voice, "Follow him, but don’t get too close, just ensure Elder Yates is within your sight."
This family was full of infatuated souls, and Felix wasn’t entirely certain that Wesley wouldn’t hang himself in front of his late wife’s grave.
Wesley arrived at his late wife Charlotte Sinclair’s grave, and as he gazed at her photo on the tombstone, tears flowed down his aged face.
With trembling, skeletal hands, he gently brushed over the photo of Charlotte.
"Charlotte, you’re still so young and beautiful. I’ve grown old—" Wesley choked up, "It’s a pity we couldn’t grow old together in this life. Such a pity..."
He closed his eyes, tears fell.
Wesley lifted his sleeve to wipe his tears, smiled at his late wife, his demeanor still like that of a tender young lad.
"I brought the lilies you like." Wesley supported himself on the tombstone and slowly knelt on one knee. He took out a ring box from his pocket, its vintage style and color worn from countless caresses, slightly yellowed now.
"Back then, I planned to return after my mission and propose to you. But I didn’t expect that I’d be gone for nearly thirty years..."
Those thirty years of captivity, coupled with various inhuman tortures, made the days unbearably long.
So long that he lost his sanity, forgetting the past, even who he was at times. Were it not for the photo of his beloved he carried, Wesley thought he wouldn’t have endured it.
He held onto a breath, hoping to come back to see her, only to realize they were forever separated...
Wesley opened the ring box, revealing an antique wedding ring.
He smiled bashfully, "My mother left this for me back then, to give to my future wife. Charlotte, you are its only owner."
Wesley stroked the black-and-white photo of Charlotte Sinclair, his throat filled with bitterness and a metallic taste.
"Charlotte, I can’t come to you yet. Tanya is alone, and I’m worried about her..." Wesley gazed at the photo of Charlotte with a tenderness that seemed to melt away, "But I promise, I won’t let you wait too long."
...
Tanya Sinclair spent five days in the hospital. During these five days, her father, Wesley Yates, often came to keep her company, taking her for walks in the garden and telling her amusing stories from when he and her mother were together.
Most of the time, Tanya was quietly listening. Her condition gradually improved, and occasionally she would ask a few questions.
Until Wesley subtly shifted the topic to Declan Pierce.
"Tanya, what kind of person is Declan Pierce? Could you tell Dad?"
Felix Kendall, arriving with snacks, happened to overhear this sentence. His steps paused slightly, leisurely waiting in place, also eager to hear Tanya’s response.
Eavesdropping isn’t honorable, but since they were discussing Declan Pierce, Felix planned to listen intently.
After all, there’s a saying: nothing is more powerful than the moonlight that is a memory of someone already passed...
