Chapter 422: Chapter 422: Can It Only Be Declan Pierce?
Felix Kendall didn’t deny it.
He lowered his eyes, paused for a moment, then smiled bitterly and said, "Uncle, I really like her, but it doesn’t matter."
As the youngest colonel in the military, coupled with his advantageous family background and naturally good looks, Felix Kendall has had a remarkably smooth life.
Before meeting Tanya Sinclair, even in matters of romance, he always maintained a superior stance; he indulged when interested, enjoying life without ever shortchanging any woman, always parting amicably.
Felix Kendall couldn’t understand why he was facing retribution because of Tanya Sinclair.
"When I was very young, I heard my grandfather mention that the woman he admired in his youth didn’t have the fate to walk together for a lifetime. So he shamelessly arranged a childhood betrothal for me..." Felix Kendall looked up at Wesley Yates, his voice hoarse and slow, "At that time, I didn’t take it seriously. If I had been more attentive, perhaps everything would have been different."
At the end, he looked at Tanya Sinclair on the sickbed, his eyes full of pain.
If he had appeared earlier, if he had known from the start how much he would like her, not only would Declan Pierce, but even Vincent Hawthorne, she wouldn’t have met—he could have ensured her lifelong stability and happiness.
But fate loves to play tricks; when he met Tanya Sinclair, she was already covered in wounds.
Felix Kendall said in a low voice, "Uncle Yates, I’ve missed her for many years. Please give me a chance to win back my own fiancée."
Wesley Yates silently patted Felix Kendall’s shoulder, "I, as her father, have been absent from her life for so many years. I’m partly responsible for the suffering she went through. I don’t have the right to agree or refuse on her behalf. She’s just lost her beloved, if you truly like her, stay by her side sincerely. As for the outcome..."
Felix Kendall calmly replied, "Uncle Yates, my greatest trait is accepting loss."
The implication was that whether Tanya Sinclair would ever like him, he accepted it.
Wesley Yates didn’t say much more and nodded in relief.
He had no opportunity to meet Declan Pierce, who his daughter loved deeply, but Wesley Yates recognized Felix Kendall’s character, which was far better than Tanya Sinclair’s damned ex-husband, by an immeasurable margin!
"Cough cough—" Wesley Yates weakly coughed twice, his thin body swayed, and Felix Kendall reached out to support him.
"Uncle Yates, let me take you back to the ward."
"No need." Wesley Yates waved his hand, "I’m not so weak that I can’t walk. Mr. Kendall, I want to trouble you with something."
"Please, go ahead."
"Lend me your driver; I want to go out for a while."
"Now?" Felix Kendall slightly frowned, a bit concerned about his health, "Uncle Yates, wherever you want to go, I’ll accompany you tomorrow. The night is cold, I’m afraid your body..."
"It’s fine, I don’t want to wait until tomorrow. It’s been too long... she’s waited for me too long." Wesley Yates’ weak voice was still incredibly firm.
Felix Kendall looked at his unyielding expression and suddenly guessed where he wanted to go. He didn’t persuade further, just made a call, and in no less than ten seconds, the guards arrived quickly.
"Take Elder Yates wherever he wants to go," Felix Kendall instructed.
"Yes, sir!"
Wesley Yates gave him a grateful nod and took one last look at Tanya Sinclair before striding away.
The cold, clear moonlight streamed through the glass windows on either side of the corridor, enveloping Wesley Yates’ figure as he passed through, seemingly ready to dissolve into the moonlight in the next second.
Felix Kendall watched Wesley Yates’ silhouette disappear around the corner and sighed silently.
Deep affection cannot endure; extreme wisdom must hurt; it has always been this way.
Felix Kendall slowly stepped into the ward, one step at a time, walking to the bedside.
Tanya Sinclair was already thin, but after these recent ordeals, she appeared even more haggard and pale. In her sleep, her brow furrowed slightly, and she murmured indistinctly.
Felix Kendall leaned down, tilting his ear to listen.
"Declan... Declan..."
Again, that name.
Felix Kendall’s heart was filled with helplessness. He silently and bitterly watched Tanya Sinclair’s pale face, seeing tears silently slide down from the corners of her eyes in sleep.
Felix Kendall extended his hand, gently wiping away the tears with his fingertips.
"Is it only Declan?" he spoke, his voice so hoarse it was barely audible.
Naturally, no response came.
A thousand miles away, at the beach with the setting sun.
A tall, slender, yet slightly hunched figure, wearing a hat, sunglasses, and a mask, had his entire face covered tightly.
He stood there, letting the waves lap over him time and again, wetting his pant legs.
A foreign doctor approached, respectfully urging in fluent Swiss, "Mr. Pierce, your rest time today is twenty minutes. There are still three minutes left. Please return to the lab with me for the next treatment."
