Chapter 415: Chapter 415: I Want Nothing of His!
Tanya lifted her eyes to look at Zane Shaw, with no intention of taking the documents.
Her gaze was both too empty and too deep, enough to unsettle even Zane, who was used to seeing all kinds of people.
"Ms. Sinclair..."
Tanya: "What exactly was Declan Pierce to me?"
Zane froze. "...What?"
Tanya stepped in closer. "I said, what exactly was Declan Pierce to me? What gave him the right to arrange my life, what gave him the right to set up a fund for my children? What gave him that right?!" By the end, Tanya’s eyes were bloodshot as she stared him down, as if she wanted to bore a hole through him with her gaze.
Years of professional training let Zane see it clearly: Tanya wasn’t targeting him.
Even if she really did dig a hole in him, it would only be to see whether Declan Pierce was hiding inside it.
"Ms. Sinclair, I understand how you feel. All of this is Mr. Pierce’s intention... I’m just a wage earner, following instructions." Zane said, "Please don’t make things difficult for me."
Tanya wiped away the tears that had spilled from the corners of her eyes. "No need." She took a deep breath. "I don’t want any of this."
Zane wasn’t surprised. Based on what he knew about Tanya, it was perfectly normal for her not to accept.
And Declan Pierce had also long anticipated that she would say this. He had come today just to complete the procedure.
"Ms. Sinclair, I understand. According to Mr. Pierce’s will, until you are willing to take over, his assets will be managed by top professional managers on your behalf, and all proceeds will still be in your name. Whenever you decide you want them, they will be handed over to you."
Tanya dug her nails hard into her palm. She wanted to laugh, but the corners of her mouth were so sore she couldn’t even lift them.
Declan Pierce wouldn’t even grant her the right to refuse.
Wesley Yates could see his daughter’s emotional state. He stepped forward and politely asked Zane to leave.
"Lawyer Shaw, my daughter needs to rest. Please leave for now."
Zane gave Wesley a polite nod, but his gaze involuntarily lingered on the man’s face for two seconds.
They really were father and daughter; Tanya’s features were quite similar to Wesley’s.
After Zane left, Tanya slowly crouched down and buried her face in her hands.
Wesley moved toward her, heart aching. He wanted to say something, but in the end he only let out a heavy sigh and stayed by his daughter’s side.
But Wesley’s own health also didn’t allow him to overexert himself, and as a doctor, Tanya was more aware of this than anyone.
So when the attending physician came over and tactfully suggested that Wesley go rest and take his medicine, Tanya forced herself to pull it together and persuade him. "Dad, I’ll be fine after I rest a bit. Listen to the doctor. When you’re feeling better, I’ll take you to visit Mom."
At the mention of his late beloved, Wesley’s eyes instantly grew wet.
"Alright." He hugged his daughter, heartbroken, his voice trembling. "Tanya, you have to take good care of yourself too. In this world, Dad... only has you left as family."
Tanya closed her eyes briefly and said hoarsely, "Okay..."
Declan Pierce knew her too well. He had calculated against her in such a cruel way, leaving her with ties and responsibilities to drag her through a world without him.
Not long after Wesley left, Felix Kendall returned, carrying a large armful of food.
Tanya glanced over it and paused faintly. It was all things she liked.
"You—"
Felix: "I just bought some things at random to see if there was anything you liked."
Tanya: "...Thank you."
Watching Tanya sit at the table and start eating in small bites, Felix finally let out a breath of relief. While she wasn’t paying attention, he went over to the window, took out his phone, and sent Caden a message.
[Thanks.]
He didn’t know Tanya well enough to know what food she liked, but Margaret and Tanya’s two kids were good friends, so he took a shortcut: he got Caden’s number from Margaret and asked him what Tanya liked to eat.
Caden’s reply came quickly.
[Caden: Uncle Kendall, are you with Mom? She’s back from her business trip, so why isn’t she coming home?]
Felix was thinking about how to respond when Tanya, still eating, said faintly from the side,
"Mr. Kendall, please tell Caden I still have some work to take care of. I’ll go back in a few days."
"..."
Felix’s fingers hovered midair as he gave Tanya a complicated look.
This woman could really be a bit too sharp sometimes.
He replied as she’d instructed, then put away his phone, pulled out a chair opposite her, and sat down.
She ate, and he sat there with his arms folded, watching her.
Tanya treated him like air. Only after she’d eaten almost enough did she finally look up at him.
"Didn’t you say there was work you needed me to move forward? Talk. The sooner I deal with it, the sooner you can report back and go home to be with Margaret. She and Grandpa Kendall are both very worried about you and miss you a lot."
She acted as if nothing had happened, already starting to worry about him instead.
Felix stared at Tanya’s pale face for a few seconds and then gave up. When this woman wanted to hide her emotions, not a trace slipped out.
"It’s about Yvonne Hawthorne." Felix turned on the recorder. "I need you to confirm exactly how she caused you to fall from the helicopter. The more detailed, the better."
Tanya glanced at the still-unhealed wounds on the back of her hand, the ones Yvonne had stabbed into her.
Just as she was about to speak, noise drifted in from outside the door.
A familiar voice cut through like a drill.
Vincent Hawthorne: "Let me in, I want to see Tanya Sinclair! I’m the father of her children!"
Felix looked over at Tanya without a change in expression, raising his brows slightly: whether to see him or not was up to her.
Tanya had just opened her mouth when she heard Joy’s voice outside as well.
"Daddy, I want to see Mommy!"
A ripple crossed Tanya’s face, and Felix got it instantly. At the same time, his dislike for Vincent deepened.
A man who used his kid as a bargaining chip was truly pathetic.
Felix went out and opened the ward door.
Outside stood Felix’s military guards.
"Colonel Kendall."
"Felix Kendall?" Vincent paused for a moment when he saw him, then frowned. "You—"
He didn’t finish the sentence. His gaze slipped past Felix and landed on Tanya inside the ward.
"Tanya!"
"Mommy!" Joy called out excitedly and tried to run toward Tanya.
The guards moved to stop her, but after meeting Felix’s eyes, they stepped aside and let them in.
"Mr. Kendall." Vincent looked at Felix. "Could you give our family some time alone?"
Felix let out a laugh. "You’re the ex-husband—what kind of ’family’ is that supposed to be? President Hawthorne, a person should have some self-awareness."
"You!" Vincent’s face changed slightly at the jab. He held his temper down and squeezed out a cold smile. "Even an ex-husband was once a husband. And who exactly is Mr. Kendall?"
Felix answered mildly, "As for the future, well, that’s hard to say."
Just then, a work call came in. Felix glanced over at Tanya and saw her bending down to talk to her daughter, her features soft, her expression much more relaxed and gentle than before.
After a brief consideration, Felix instructed the guards, "Leave the door open."
With that, he walked out, answering the call, without giving Vincent so much as another look.
Vincent shot a cold, stabbing glance at Felix’s back and then turned away, stepping into the ward.
"Tanya..." He looked at Tanya’s frail figure, genuinely feeling a stab of pain. "I’d already found locals on Pyralis. I wanted to go to the island myself to look for you!"
When he mentioned Pyralis, Tanya covered her daughter’s ears.
She finally lifted her eyes to look at him, but there was no trace of emotion in them, not to mention gratitude; they weren’t even warm.
"You brought Joy here today because you were determined to see me. It wasn’t to make small talk, was it?" Tanya was far too smart not to know what Vincent wanted. For him to rush over at a time like this, there was only one reason—
"You’re worried I’ll tell the military that Yvonne Hawthorne deliberately caused me to fall from the helicopter and nearly get killed, aren’t you?"
