Chapter 414: Chapter 414: He Left Everything to Her
The black Mercedes G-Class disappeared into the night, and the fireworks in the distance resumed their festivities.
On the other side of the night sky, the cold, lonely moonlight fell on the hillside, and a stooped silhouette slowly appeared at the hilltop, with a wide brimmed hat concealing the entire face.
He watched the direction in which the black Mercedes G-Class departed.
Behind him, a blonde-haired, blue-eyed man strode up and whispered, "It’s time to go, sir."
The man turned around, using the cane in his hand to sweep the ground, slowly walking forward clumsily. The cane hit fragments of rock, causing him to lose his balance and awkwardly collapse to the ground.
The nearby foreign bodyguard wanted to help but remembered the earlier instructions and restrained himself, withdrawing his extended hand.
The man on the ground struggled to get up. He was very tall, even with his back hunched, he appeared like a lean mountain. He reached out with a bony hand, feeling for his hat, picked it up, and placed it back on his head. Using the cane, he swept the way ahead bit by bit, slowly making his way to the car.
In fact, it was barely a few dozen meters, yet he took nearly ten minutes to complete it.
Throughout the entire process, his body seemed to be enduring great pain, stopping every few steps to rest slightly, but even so, he remained silent...
Tanya awoke to find herself in a hospital bed. She shifted her gaze and saw the IV drip connected to her hand, her eyes mechanically moving forward to see Felix sleeping on the sofa.
The caretaker’s sofa was less than 1.8 meters long, and his long limbs were awkwardly cramped in as he slept.
Tanya moved her gaze lifelessly away. Outside the window was overcast, making it hard to discern the time. She stared at the window for a while, then suddenly sat up and pulled out the IV needle from the back of her hand.
Before her feet touched the ground, a shadow lunged toward her, a man’s hot hand gripping her shoulder tightly.
"Tanya!" Felix, not fully awake, felt his soul nearly vanish, "What the hell are you trying to do?"
As soon as he opened his eyes, his mind didn’t fully engage, he saw Tanya staring blankly at the window. Before he could react, she sat up quietly and pulled out the IV needle. Wasn’t the intention clear?
Not only were his drowsiness scared away, but Felix’s soul almost flew off.
"Tanya, cry if you need to, vent however you want. Want to let off some steam? Fine! I’ll take you to topple Declan Pierce’s grave if needed..." By the end, Felix’s voice was shaking, "Don’t pull this silent stunt on me!"
It was the first time he felt this helpless with a woman.
Tanya glanced at his hand pressing on her shoulder, "Do you think I’m going to jump out of the window?"
Felix, breathing heavily, responded, "Look in the mirror, you have a ’nothing to lose’ expression right now."
"I won’t die." Tanya’s tone was so flat there was no emotion detectable, she was clearly looking at him, yet Felix found her eyes to be inexplicably empty.
"He went to such lengths to get me away, to let me recognize my biological father, so I could have one more reason to live," Tanya tugged at her pale lips, "He went through so much trouble, how could I let him down?"
Felix hesitantly released her, watching Tanya walk barefoot towards the window. He followed closely behind, within an arm’s reach to grab her.
However, he saw Tanya pick up a small moth that had flown in and was fluttering around the windowsill. She opened a slight gap in the window and let the moth out.
"Felix." Tanya gazed at the snow in the garden still partially unmelted, softly asked, "How long have I been unconscious?"
"Two days."
"Declan Pierce has been buried?"
"Yes."
"Where is the cemetery?"
"He was cremated, according to his last wishes, Jasper Monroe scattered his ashes at sea. There’s no cemetery." Felix calmly relayed Declan Pierce’s posthumous arrangements.
No place for remembrance was left.
Tanya steadily gazed outside, where some areas still donned the red of New Year celebrations.
"Felix." Tanya suddenly turned to him, "Aren’t you going home? It’s New Year."
Felix didn’t expect her to come out with such a line, the implied hint to leave was quite apparent.
He had been spending day and night watching over her, yet in Tanya’s eyes, it seemed he had nothing better to do.
Felix nearly laughed in exasperation.
"I..."
Once the words left his mouth, Felix choked up.
In what capacity was he watching over her?
Just as he was at a loss for words, a call came in from Crawford, Felix clung to it like a lifeline, immediately answering, "Detective Crawford."
Whatever was said, Felix glanced at Tanya, "Her current state isn’t well, please hold on a bit. I’ve got it covered here."
He hung up the phone, using the work call as an excuse.
"I’ve got tasks to handle at work, need to wait till you’re emotionally stable to progress them."
Listening to this, Tanya nodded mechanically.
Evidently, she accepted this explanation.
And then silence fell again.
Felix looked at her frail figure, sighed, "Hungry? Anything you want to eat?"
Tanya shook her head, "Can’t eat."
Felix frowned, made his way outside, "I’ll get you something easy to digest. Even if you don’t feel like eating, you must try to have some."
He wasn’t good at comforting women, feeling a bit disgruntled about his harsh tone as he rubbed the back of his head after leaving the room.
Care workers were stationed right outside, once Felix stepped out, they promptly went in to take over.
Anyway, Tanya shouldn’t be left alone right now.
Tanya stood by the window for a long time, a care worker couldn’t help but approach, "Ms. Sinclair, perhaps you’d like to sit down and rest?"
Tanya did not respond, so the care worker fell silent.
Before long, there was a knock on the door. The care worker went to open it, stunned for a moment to see a frail, elderly man.
"Who are you looking for?"
Wesley Yates moved his lips, and like a child learning to speak, he painstakingly pronounced each word.
"I’m looking for... my daughter..."
Through the reflection in the glass window, Tanya saw the person approaching.
Her tense body gradually relaxed as she turned to meet the man’s hazy, aged eyes, brimming with tears.
"Tanya..." Wesley tremulously called her, anxious.
Tanya’s gaze gradually focused, landing on her father’s unfamiliar face.
Wesley Yates was already aware of what had transpired. These past days, he received extensive treatment, recalled many things, and learned much.
His eyes overflowed with heartache, wanting to embrace his daughter, he reached out then paused awkwardly.
He didn’t know how to get close or comfort his daughter grieving for a lost love.
"Tanya, if you feel like crying, just let it out," Wesley said with deep concern, "Don’t keep it bottled up."
"Dad, I’m all cried out..." Tanya said mechanically.
She was still alive, yet her soul seemed withdrawn as if a walking corpse, trapped behind an invisible glass barrier, leaving everything around her feeling so unreal.
Wesley was pained to the core.
"Do you know how I survived all these years?" He gazed intently at Tanya, on her face he saw the youth of Charlotte Sinclair. Wesley displayed a nostalgic smile, "It was thoughts of your mother that kept me going."
Later, amidst the torment, he forgot who he was, yet still remembered those he deeply loved...
"Dad knows how hard it is for you... but staying alive, you’ll get through this. Just seeing you, my precious daughter, keeps me going."
His precious daughter, she was the most loved, his remaining legacy.
Tanya gazed at her father, suddenly she smiled lightly, with her heart full of desolation.
Declan Pierce, you were heartless...
He foresaw everything, predicted his own time of death, knew her weakness lay in family.
"Ms. Sinclair." A long-lost familiar voice sounded.
Tanya lifted her head woodenly to see the suited attorney Zane Shaw appear at the door.
In his eyes, a fleeting moment of pity was present.
Zane Shaw approached, handing over documents to Tanya.
Speaking in a business-like manner, he stated, "Ms. Sinclair, according to Mr. Pierce’s will, you’ll receive all assets under his name. Mr. Pierce also established a top-tier research institute for you, from equipment to hiring are all completed. You decide what project to research. Additionally, for your two children, Caden and Joy, Mr. Pierce left a substantial fund and shares for when they reach adulthood."
Tanya closed her eyes; finally, tears fell.
He wanted her to live, to find happiness, to have everything... even though he couldn’t be part of it.
He really treated her as a princess, bestowing her a castle in reality at the cost of everything.
"Declan Pierce, you really are a bastard..."
