Chapter 413: Chapter 413: Funeral
Pyralis Island.
Tanya Sinclair stayed with the strange man after administering the needles.
She suddenly felt a sharp pain in her heart, so intense it made her unable to straighten her back.
At that moment, there was a rustling sound from the bed, and Tanya looked up to meet the man’s hazy eyes.
"You’re awake? How do you feel?" Tanya asked softly, "Can you understand me?"
The man didn’t speak, only stared fixedly at her face, and suddenly, with a light in his eyes, he grabbed her excitedly, his bony fingers almost digging into her flesh.
Tanya was startled.
"Let go of me!"
The strange man opened his mouth but could only make noises like a beast’s whimper.
Tanya retreated quickly, but the strange man kept advancing while holding onto her.
Just then, a cold, angry warning sounded from behind: "Let her go!"
Tanya turned to see Felix Kendall rushing in, and the guards at the door had already been brought down by him.
Felix Kendall pointed his gun directly at the strange man’s forehead.
But Tanya saw tears welling up in the man’s eyes as he stared at her.
"Wait!" She called to Felix Kendall, and Tanya tentatively asked the man, "Do you know me?"
Tears flooded from the strange man’s eyes, and finally, he painfully uttered two words from his throat.
Upon hearing the name he called out, Tanya was thunderstruck, completely stunned.
The strange man opened his mouth clumsily and called out a strained "Charlotte..."
Charlotte Sinclair, that was her mother’s name!
Tanya grabbed the strange man: "You know my mother?"
"Mother...?" The man was stunned for a moment, then grew increasingly excited. His emaciated hand slowly reached for Tanya’s face. Seeing this, Felix Kendall frowned and was about to pull him away, but Tanya stopped him.
"It’s okay, Felix Kendall, don’t move him. He won’t hurt me."
Tanya looked at the strange man before her, his tear-filled eyes, and at that instant, a suspicion arose in her mind, causing her to tremble uncontrollably.
Tears slowly overflowed from the corner of her eyes.
"Are you..."
Before she could say it, the strange man suddenly shivered and retrieved a rusty pocket watch from his collar. He carefully opened the lid, like a cherished treasure, revealing a photo of her mother, Charlotte Sinclair, in her youth.
"Charlotte..." The man’s voice was hoarse and he struggled to speak, "This is my... my wife..."
When he mentioned the word ’wife,’ an indescribable tenderness and longing appeared in his eyes.
Tanya’s tears surged.
This is her biological father!
"Dad..."
Tanya hugged him tightly, and the father and daughter wept in each other’s arms.
Felix Kendall stood by, watching the scene, happy for Tanya Sinclair. He also realized that Declan Pierce’s purpose in bringing Tanya here was to reunite them as father and daughter...
But why didn’t Declan Pierce just bring the man directly to Tanya? Why go through such a convoluted process?
Felix Kendall couldn’t figure it out, but soon the sound of a helicopter came from outside.
Felix Kendall immediately became alert, gripping his gun cautiously, but in the next moment, Crawford and his team appeared outside.
"Ms. Sinclair! General Kendall!"
Tanya Sinclair breathed a sigh of relief, but her father shrank back fearfully at the sight of strangers. Tanya held him, soothingly, "Dad, don’t be scared, they’re our allies. They’re here to rescue us."
The man trusted no one but Tanya Sinclair.
After returning safely to Gralen Island by helicopter, under Tanya Sinclair’s reassurance, the man followed the nurses to clean his body, change into clean clothes, and trim his hair and beard, revealing a handsome yet weathered face.
His body was too weak, and years of silence had temporarily impaired his speech abilities. After eating a little, he fell asleep.
He clenched Tanya Sinclair’s hand with one of his, while the other caressed the photo of Charlotte Sinclair on his chest, unwilling to let go.
Tanya waited until he was soundly asleep before gently releasing his hand and walking out.
Outside, Crawford was discussing matters with Felix Kendall. Seeing Tanya Sinclair come out, the two quickly stopped their conversation.
Crawford proactively handed Tanya Sinclair a file on the strange man.
"Ms. Sinclair, the man you saved is named Wesley Yates. He is a top nuclear weapon expert who was kidnapped on his way to an international conference and has been missing for nearly thirty years... The International Alliance tried to find him before, but there was no trace. They all thought Expert Yates had sacrificed himself..."
Tanya Sinclair’s heart was suddenly filled with mixed emotions.
"He’s my biological father..." She murmured, "He didn’t abandon me; he just couldn’t come back."
"Mr. Yates has been forced by terrorists to help develop weapons during these thirty years. Mr. Yates steadfastly refused, so they injected him with a large amount of mental control drugs..." Crawford sighed, looking somewhat guilty, "Ms. Sinclair, the country will fully cover Mr. Yates’ subsequent treatment."
"Thank you, I will also do my best to heal my father." Tanya was curious, "By the way, Crawford, how did you find the coordinates of the secret room?"
"It’s strange," Crawford replied, "The secret room automatically sent me the coordinates..."
Tanya Sinclair was stunned: "Automatically? How is that possible? That place is Tom’s den..."
She stopped slowly.
Everything felt wrong, from her kidnapping by Tom to her reunion with her father, every single event was wrong!!
It seems like the truth is about to reveal itself... Tanya suddenly felt a severe headache.
"Tanya." Felix suddenly spoke heavily, his gaze at her filled with pity and helplessness, "There’s some news I just received. It’s about Declan. Do you want to hear it now, or wait until you go back to see for yourself?"
"He..." Tanya forced a smile, "Is Declan planning to propose to me? Could he be waiting at the airport to surprise me? My father—was it Declan who found him, right? He deliberately brought me here for a father-daughter reunion!"
Felix silently stared at her.
Smart as Tanya was, she knew everything, she just refused to admit it.
Crawford sighed quietly and left the room, closing the door.
"Tanya." Felix walked over to her with long strides, "Why did Declan go through so much trouble to arrange all this, do you know?"
"I don’t know!!" Tanya shouted hysterically, her suppressed emotions finally collapsing.
Her vision went black, and she fainted.
In her dream, Tanya returned to university, the day freshman year started, and she walked into the classroom to introduce herself.
"Hello everyone, my name is Tanya Sinclair, you can call me Tanya..."
From the back seat, Declan, with his blond hair, slowly raised his head from his nap.
Their eyes met, and this time, Tanya walked over to him proactively, "Hello, can I sit next to you?"
Declan smiled and pulled out the chair beside him, but just as Tanya was about to sit down, everything around started to disappear, even Declan in front of her slowly shattered.
She frantically tried to grab, but couldn’t catch anything!
...
"Declan!" Tanya screamed as she woke up, finding herself lying on a hospital bed, Felix watching over her as if he had stayed up for a long time, his eyes bloodshot, a circle of stubble on his chin.
"Tanya..."
Tanya resisted intensely, "Where is my phone, where is my phone?"
Felix handed her phone to her, and Tanya began to dial Declan’s number. He had always answered immediately, but this time there was no answer until the ring ended.
Tanya got out of bed barefoot, stumbling and rushing out, "Declan... I want to go back, I need to go back to see Declan!"
Felix chased after her, trying to hold her back, but Tanya resisted more fiercely.
In the end, Felix had to grab her and pressed her against the wall.
"Tanya! Wake up! You’ve been in a coma for four days, do you know? Declan is dead! He’s dead, do you understand?"
Tanya bit down hard on Felix’s hand, but he didn’t even flinch until Tanya herself became exhausted and let go, leaving a circle of blood marks on his arm.
Tanya collapsed as if all energy had been drained from her.
Felix squatted in front of her and softly said, "Eat something, and I’ll take you back. Elder Yates was sent back early. He’s too weak to bear seeing you like this."
Tanya said nothing.
Felix carried her back to the room, but feeding her was in vain, finally having to resort to an IV drip.
He took Tanya on a special flight back home, with the first stop being Declan’s funeral hall.
If Tanya couldn’t see Declan with her own eyes, she would torment herself to death.
Tanya mechanically walked to Declan’s body, lying there so beautifully and peacefully, without a trace of life.
"Declan, you liar! You big liar!" Tanya gently placed her face against Declan’s chest, closed her eyes, tears slipping into her mouth, bitter indeed.
Inside the funeral hall, it was just Tanya and Felix, outside the night was deep and the cold wind bleak.
Felix leaned by the door smoking, glancing back at Tanya inside.
These days, Tanya had been keeping watch by Declan’s casket, like a meditating Saint, motionless.
Tanya keeping watch over Declan, Felix keeping watch over Tanya.
Suddenly, the sound of fireworks came from afar.
Tanya seemed to have her soul awakened, mechanically lifting her eyes to see the fireworks blooming in the sky, one after another, dazzlingly eye-catching.
Felix dropped the unsmoked cigarette on the ground, stepping on it to extinguish.
He said, "Tanya, it’s New Year."
New Year...
Tanya looked at Declan lying there.
"New Year..." she suddenly lowered her head and started laughing, the laughter trembling through her entire body, staring at Declan with a look full of confusion and sorrow, even a hint of hatred, heavy enough to crush her.
"You said you’d spend New Year with me, Declan, you promised me... You said you’d live well, to a ripe old age..."
She frantically tried to pull Declan out of the casket.
But she was too tired, her weak body could no longer bear the immense grief, Tanya collapsed to the ground as if drained completely.
"Tanya!" Felix’s expression changed slightly, darting forward to scoop her up in his arms, rushing out.
The car was parked outside.
Felix carried Tanya to the back seat.
The black SUV roared into the night, Felix inadvertently glanced out the window, seeing a hunched figure on the roadside hill, but as he looked closer, there was nothing there.
It seemed to be an illusion.
Felix shook his head, glanced at the sleeping Tanya in the backseat, and with a bitter smile, his tone mocking, "To push me to this extent, Tanya Sinclair, you’re quite the character."
