Chapter 158: Selene’s Gamble
Leon was greatly astonished. To say he was shocked wasn’t an overstatement. Soon, however, his surprise cooled, and he felt a bit bitter.
’Fucking hell... it seems I’m destined to be stuck in this stage forever.’
Although he felt bitter that Selene completed her requirements before him, he was also relieved. Once she became Tier One, her strength would soar, and she would definitely become stronger than him. This would relieve the pressure on him by a great margin.
"Congratulations. But it seems you haven’t evolved yet?" He asked, not noticing any change in her aura.
Selene nodded. "Unfortunately, it isn’t as simple as leveling up which is instantaneous. This evolution can take hours, and we’ll be at our weakest during this period."
Leon frowned, but understood what she was implying. Evolution wasn’t just about changing levels. It concerned the whole body and soul as they would be upgraded to a different stage.
’I guess reality isn’t much different from those novels, then.’
Suddenly, his eyes narrowed. "Be at your weakest?"
"You heard me right," Selene nodded. "I don’t trust anyone here, so I’m going to burden you with the task of protecting me."
Hearing this, a flash of surprise crossed Leon’s eyes. "Protect you? This..."
Although he felt like their actions yesterday were good enough to feel like real allies, they weren’t enough for her to take such a bold step. Was she really willing to take such a gamble?
’She should be aware that I could feel threatened by her evolution and kill her so she won’t be a threat. Yet...’
He held her gaze for a full minute, then sighed.
"You’re crazy."
She nodded with a faint smile. "I know."
Leon had no reason to refuse, so he shrugged. "No problem, then. You can head to your room. I’ll stay out—"
Before he finished speaking, he saw her eyes close and her body fell forward. With sharp reflexes, he stretched out his hand and stopped her head from hitting the table.
"This crazy girl...!"
He looked at her unconscious figure in exasperation, then gently laid her head on the table. He massaged his temples as he felt a growing headache.
’The people around me are really strange. Having one Thyra and one Cassie around me is already enough.’
After a full minute, he sighed and stood up. With graceful ease, he carried the unconscious girl in his arms and went upstairs to her room.
Thankfully, no maid encountered him on his way, else they might have misunderstood the situation.
While carrying her, there were two things that caught his attention. Her body was hot, and her slightly pale skin was becoming flushed. Also, he could sense the mana in her body stirring gently as if nurturing her body.
When he entered her room, he was surprised by how plain the room was. For a moment, he thought that this girl was actually a robot in disguise. However, the warmth of her skin clearly proved otherwise.
’She has poor taste... or let’s say no taste at all.’
He quickly lay her on the bed, then went to the bathroom to get a towel. Soaking it in cool water, he squeezed out the excess water then approached her unconscious figure.
At this point, Selene’s skin was slightly red, and a faint frown of discomfort was on her face.
Leon gently pressed the cool towel against her forehead, contrasting the heat her body was radiating.
He didn’t keep the towel in one position but continued to press it against her cheeks, arms, then her head again. While he did this, he had no indecent thoughts at all.
After all, this was something he had done in the past when his younger sister was sick. As he took care of Selene, he couldn’t help but see a shadow of Clara in her, and his heart ached faintly.
’Patience, Clara... I’ll come find you. Even if you’re a zombie, I don’t care.’
With a solemn mood, he continued to cool her overheating body for thirty minutes until her skin stopped reddening.
Only then did he stop and sit in the chair beside the bed, checking through his status window just to pass time.
Another thirty minutes later, he heard Marie knock on the door and he answered, surprising her.
"This... I... I’ll come back later."
Before she could misunderstand, Leon quickly stopped her. "Wait. You can come in."
"Really?" Marie sounded doubtful, wondering if this young man actually wanted to eat two meals at a time. Was he really...?
Frowning, she dismissed those thoughts. After all, Leon wasn’t someone like that.
"Yes, come in."
Hearing his clear voice, she didn’t hesitate any longer and stepped inside. Only when she was inside and Leon explained did she understand what was going on.
’Hm, I’m afraid if it was that Cassie girl, your explanation wouldn’t have been enough to convince her.’
Marie thought in amusement, then smiled. "It’s very bold of her to actually expose herself to you like this."
Leon nodded, as he couldn’t have agreed more. Even he wouldn’t dare do something so careless.
"Well, since she decided to take the step, you should respond too," She smiled and walked towards the door. "Having her as a complete ally wouldn’t be so bad."
Watching the door close, Leon said nothing. He simply leaned back into the chair and closed his eyes. Of course, he wasn’t sleeping. His senses were on high alert, and any slight movement would be noticed by him.
— 19 hours later
Leon was starting to get bored and considered walking around the room when he noticed a qualitative change in Selene’s mana and aura. The temperature in the room dropped sharply, then slowly returned to normal.
The silver-haired lady’s presence suddenly became thicker and purer, as if all impurities had been removed from her body.
For a moment, he couldn’t look away from her beautiful face. Even though he had gotten used to Thyra’s disastrous beauty, he still had to admit that Selene looked more charming now.
’... and incredibly dangerous.’
A minute later, the girl’s eyelids trembled, and she slowly opened her eyes. It was currently three in the morning, so the darkness still blotted out the sky. However, the solar lamps in her room were on, letting her see her surroundings.
The first thing she noticed was her clothes that were damp from sweat, clinging tightly to her curvy body. Although Leon could afford to cool her exposed skin, he didn’t do anything excessive, such as taking off her clothes to cool her whole body ’properly’.
She unconsciously sighed in relief, as this had been her greatest fear. If he even dared to take advantage of her... Her eyes flashed coldly, but she calmed herself.
Slowly, she sat up from the bed, then turned towards the other presence in the room. Leon was seated a few meters away from her bed, his gaze fixed on her.
The two stared at each other in silence, then Leon smiled.
"Congratulations on your evolution."
