Chapter 142: Important Information

When the others woke up, they were surprised to find Leon and Marie cooking in the kitchen like a real couple. It didn’t look weird at all since Marie was just a few years older than him, and if a person wasn’t told beforehand, they wouldn’t know that she was already a mother.

Breakfast was simple and everyone ate quietly. There wasn’t much to talk about, and since Leon already informed everyone that their attack would be carried out by night, no one did anything in particular.

Just a few minutes after 10 AM, the door was knocked, and when Jones opened it, he was surprised to see Thane and another stoic-looking police officer.

Leon raised an eyebrow as he looked at the two guests that had entered the house. What could warrant the visit of police officers?

The stoic-looking officer, John, immediately searched for the person who had been described to him. When he did, his words died in his throat.

’This... an immortal...’

His eyes were wide as he stared at Selene as if charmed by the young lady’s beauty.

Thane frowned and immediately elbowed him, snapping him back to his senses. As an actual police officer before the apocalypse, John was quick to regain his composure.

"Ahem," He cleared his throat. "Young lady, you were reported for killing a civilian yesterday. Am I wrong?"

Selene glanced at him, then refocused on the teacup before her.

"You’re quite slow. A murder happened yesterday, and you’re only showing up today?"

John was instantly tongue-tied, not knowing what to say. Meanwhile, the others looked at Selene in surprise. She killed someone yesterday?

Leon was the least surprised, though. Seeing her indifferent attitude, he could deduce what had caused the death of the victim.

Thane frowned at Selene’s words and spoke in a righteous tone. "You can’t just dodge the fact that you killed someone! All human lives are equal, and you took one!"

Selene paused, then looked at him. Her expression was frosty.

"All human lives are equal? Do you want to take my life?"

Fear flashed in Thane’s eyes as he took two steps back, his grip tightening on the gun he carried. He had a feeling that this woman could kill him right here, right now.

’Evolvers are really a crazy bunch, a-aren’t they?’

Gulping down his fear, he gritted his teeth and spoke. "I might not have the power to take your life, but do not misuse your power too."

Immediately after saying that, he turned and left with John, afraid he might be killed if he stayed any longer.

Selene paid no attention to his words and continued observing the teacup. Leon closed his eyes and leaned back into the chair, completely relaxed.

The siblings sat quietly in a corner, eating snacks that had been brought from Leon’s base.

Emily and Jones exchanged looks of understanding, then nodded to each other. It seemed this group was even more impressive than they thought.

About twenty minutes later, the door was knocked again. Frowning, Emily went to check. This time, it wasn’t officers but a burly woman with a scar running down the side of her face.

"Who are you?" She asked, cautious

"That’s Anna. Let her in."

Hearing Leon’s authoritative voice, Emily nodded and complied despite her confusion. Since when had Leon made friends with such an ordinary tough-looking woman?

Unfortunately, her question remained unanswered. When Anna stepped inside, she was immediately recognized by Jones who had seen her yesterday.

Of course, she didn’t pay much attention to him. Instead, she looked at the young man who was also staring at her with his deep black eyes.

He remained silent for a few seconds, then asked, "It’s ready?"

Anna nodded stiffly, quickly approaching him and unfurling a scroll where a crude map of the base had been drawn with the important areas highlighted.

"I managed to sneak into the Inner Ring and even get a good look at the Core Ring, so I was able to draw something this detailed," She said, glancing at Leon.

The others also came close since they were interested, and began to inspect the map.

With them all being silent, Anna continued her explanation.

"There are many armed men in this Inner Ring, and it is very difficult to cause trouble in that area. Even evolvers are careful not to make themselves targets of the armed men by mistake."

She paused, her gaze lingering on Leon’s attentive expression. She couldn’t help but feel like this young man must have been an excellent student in the past.

Still, none of that mattered anymore. She continued, "As for the Core Ring, that place is even more dangerous. That’s where the bastard dog Sunflare lives, and that’s where his most powerful subordinates live. As long as you pass through the gates, his villa is straight ahead."

Finally ending her explanation there, she took a deep breath and relaxed. Leon nodded to her and said, "Good job."

He gestured to Marie, and the woman immediately went to bring something that had been prepared beforehand.

Seeing the packet of noodles and pasta, Anna’s eyes were wide and brimming with tears. When Leon had given her such a risky mission yesterday, she didn’t believe him at first.

However, knowing what her nephew might have to do again so that he could eat, she decided to try. Luckily, she succeeded in getting the information Leon needed, and now, she had gotten the reward he promised.

"Really... I can’t say thank you enough."

Although she had an inkling about what Leon’s group were aiming for, she wasn’t really confident that they could succeed. Still, she felt genuinely grateful towards him.

"It’s alright," Leon smiled faintly. "You should manage this for now. In a few days, things will change for the better."

Anna looked at his confident profile and nodded unconsciously. Still hugging the packet of noodles, she quickly stepped out of the house and returned to her nephew.

"Now, you’ve gotten a better understanding of this place. Are we still attacking?" Emily asked, her voice filled with helplessness.

Even as she asked, she already knew what Leon’s answer would be.

Still, he managed to surprise her. "We? I’m only going to attack with Marie and Selene. You two are to stay behind and protect those kids until we’re done with our business."

Emily was stunned, but could only sigh in defeat. She wondered if this guy could be any crazier.

Soon, the darkness of the night blanketed the sky.
