Chapter 136: Floyd Bennett Camp
Leon approached the driver’s seat and said, "I’ll drive."
Instantly, three voices protested in objection. "No!"
Leon was a little startled by the outburst and looked at the three objectors. Selene, Emily, and the other guy whose name was Jones.
"What’s wrong?"
Confused, he asked.
However, Selene didn’t answer him. She still remembered how she had hit her head against the front seat several times during the period where Leon drove the taxi weeks ago.
She wanted to avoid any similar experience, so she definitely couldn’t allow him to drive again. While Leon was confused by the strange silence, Marie made a quick deduction and smiled.
"You can just sit beside me, Boss. I’ll drive."
Although he was still confused about why they didn’t want him to drive, Leon just shrugged and agreed.
Marie threw one last wave at her daughter who was currently standing beside Fel, then got into the modified car.
Leon sat beside her, while Selene sat beside the former prisoners in the back seats. After spending days at the base, the two had lost all the will to escape and surrendered.
Although there was nothing to guarantee that they wouldn’t try anything funny, Leon had specifically told them that he had no qualms throwing them to some zombies to be eaten alive.
With everyone in the car, Marie started the engine and drove off, heading southeast of Williamsburg.
As the car moved through the streets, Leon glanced at Emily through the rearview mirror and asked, "What can you say about this Floyd Camp?"
The blonde lady hesitated, then sighed. "It’s a strong base. Over five thousand survivors, of whom around nine hundred are armed men and three hundred are evolvers."
"Oh?" Leon raised an eyebrow, then said. "Be more specific."
"Mn," She nodded. "Actually, the base is being led by a man called Sunflare. But his real name is Dwayne. He is a powerful Tier One Evolved who quickly gathered the men in the area and managed to secure the military weapons in the nearby military bases. It’s with these weapons that he was able to build an armed troop of about nine hundred men and a strong team of evolvers."
At her mention of the Tier One Evolved leader, a surprised expression crossed Marie’s face, but quickly disappeared.
This puzzled Emily and her partner as they expected the group to grow wary after hearing that. Were they really unafraid of Tier One Evolveds?
"Is that so...?" Leon said slowly, then nodded. "It seems the trip will be worth it, then."
He then fell silent, and the drive continued in silence. The car came under attack from several unranked beasts and zombies, including a few Tier One beasts. However, the vehicle didn’t have to stop at all.
Whenever a Tier One beast appeared, Leon simply climbed out and went ahead to collect the soul crystals.
As for those that were unworthy of his attention, Selene’s ice spikes were enough to deal with them.
Thirteen hours later, the car finally drew close to the Floyd Bennett Field Camp. Usually, this kind of drive would have been boring and tiring, but as evolvers, none of them really felt anything.
Instead, it was Emily and Jones that were stunned after seeing Leon casually dispose terrifying Tier One beasts.
Was he really that strong, even while he wasn’t a Tier One Evolved yet? He didn’t even use any ability at all. He simply swung his sword once and the beasts were crushed and sliced in half.
And if a single swing wasn’t enough, then two would do the job.
’What a monster,’ Emily thought, feeling her right arm throb as if remembering the pain she had experienced weeks ago. Thankfully, Leon had been kind enough to let Fel heal her after the duo surrendered.
Marie brought the car to a halt under Leon’s command as he turned and said, "Everyone, hand over your weapons. Remember, we’re going undercover for now and would only act like normal evolvers."
Selene looked reluctant, but nodded and handed over her sword and crown. Emily also gave up her shield while her partner gave up his dual blades.
Leon stored everything in his storage ring, then gave each person a Blood Spear which was a common unranked weapon.
Soon, the car resumed its journey before being stopped once more at the huge gates of the settlement.
Leon looked up at the towering walls and couldn’t help but sigh in admiration. This place had clearly been built with a lot of insight, and it seemed the leader wasn’t merely a brute, after all.
"Who are you? Get out of the car with your hands behind your head!"
A middle-aged man wearing a military uniform and carrying an assault rifle said harshly as he pointed his gun at the modified car. Behind him were three other armed men who had their guns raised and pointed.
It was obvious that if Leon’s group showed any suspicious action, they weren’t going to hesitate before pulling the triggers.
Leon and the others carefully stepped outside the car with their hands behind their heads, complying to the man’s orders.
Seeing them act obedient, the armed man was relieved, then tensed again. Looking at the weapons carried by this group, he realized...
"You’re evolvers?"
Leon nodded casually.
Behind the man, one of the armed men gasped and trembled. He knew how powerful evolvers were and was naturally scared. His lust towards Selene immediately vanished and his indecent thoughts evaporated in a flash.
The middle-aged man, however, was quite composed. He knew that while evolvers were strong, most of them would still die to a bullet to the head.
So, he was not afraid of Leon’s group. Instead, he was cautious.
"Where do you come from and why are you here?" He asked solemnly, keeping his gun pointed at them.
Leon answered smoothly, "We escaped from Bushwick a while ago, but thankfully, we stumbled upon this place. Currently, we’re looking for a place to rest before continuing to search for our families."
He spoke with such convincing sincerity that the man did not doubt his words in the slightest. Instead, he even felt a little thrilled.
’Judging by how they modified this vehicle and their composed looks, they must be very strong. They’ll make a good addition to the evolvers of the base.’
Nodding with a smile, he lowered his gun slightly and spoke.
"You guys can definitely rest here. However, to get a house allocated to you, you need to pay a quarter of a bag of rice and a bottle of oil."
Leon raised an eyebrow, but was already prepared for this.
Gesturing at the boot of the car, he said with a smile.
"We can surely afford that."
