Chapter 137: First Day Scouting
Leon and his group were brought into a small security building attached to the outer walls, where their luggage was checked in case they had any dangerous item.
As for their weapons, they were forced to leave it behind since they refused to join the army of evolvers as the middle-aged man had expressed.
Although Marie wanted to resist, as they were practically disarming them, Leon signalled for her to cooperate. Besides, it wasn’t like those blood spears were their actual weapons.
"Your vehicle will be confiscated too," The middle-aged man said. "Unless you can pay with a full bag of rice, you’ll have to surrender it to us. After all, you’re living behind the safe walls of this establishment."
Hearing this, Leon frowned, and he felt a flicker of irritation. It was impossible to not see the greed in the man’s eyes when he realized how modified Leon’s vehicle was. Also, the amount of food supplies Leon had with him was not small at all, so he wanted to get a portion of it too.
It was either the modified vehicle, or the bag of rice. Leon had to choose.
Scoffing in his heart, Leon’s tone changed as he spoke to the man. "We’re taking our car with us. You can have the bag of rice."
Hearing his answer, the man was surprised and felt a bit of regret. After all, if he got that car and sold it to the evolved team, he could surely get more than a bag of rice, which would feed his family for a long time.
Still, he quickly regained his composure and nodded. Two of his men took out a bag from the five bags of rice in Leon’s vehicle, then closed the boot.
The middle-aged man smiled. "Well then, Thane here will lead you to your allocated house. Don’t cause any trouble or you might lose your life."
The armed man called Thane stepped forward and introduced himself to Leon’s group. Then, they all got into the car while Thane directed them to the house assigned to them.
As expected, the house was within the outer ring of the base, practically the slums. The outer ring was where non-evolvers lived and where the poor who were either unwilling or unable to work lived.
Life here was really miserable that even the usually stoic Selene frowned as she glanced at the skinny people who hung around. She could even see some children digging through the dirt in search for earthworms and other insects to eat.
It was a living hell. Even though the threat of zombies no longer loomed over their heads, they were plagued by hunger and starvation.
"This is what happens when you cannot provide any use to the base. You get the bare minimum."
Thane sneered as he looked at the people, and Leon couldn’t help but agree with him. However, he felt that something was not right.
The condition of these people was really miserable. Even in Leon’s base, those who were unwilling to work were still able to eat two bowls of rice a day, and were not sickly at all.
These people, however, looked like they had been starving for weeks. Was there really no food to give them?
"Let’s go inside."
After watching Thane depart, Leon said to the others, and they got into the building.
It was just a two-bedroom apartment with barely any furniture left inside. There was only a single three-sitter couch in the living room, and a bed in each room. There was also a kitchen and a toilet, with few utensils around.
Leon didn’t mind, as they wouldn’t stay here for long. Once they set down their luggages, Leon sat on the couch and looked at Emily.
"You said they wouldn’t allow us entry into the Inner Ring of the base, right?"
The blonde woman nodded. "That place is only reserved for the family of the evolvers, and the armed men. There are a few people too who manage to prove their worth, and are allowed to live there. So the security there is tighter."
Selene glanced at her. "How many Tier One Evolveds are in this base?"
Emily hesitated, then spoke, "As of two weeks ago, there were only two. Sunflare and his second in command. I don’t know about now, though."
"Maximum currently would be around five," Marie speculated, tapping her chin in thought.
Leon nodded in agreement with her, then leaned into the chair. "Let’s wait for about thirty minutes. After that, I’ll be scouting the area with Jones. Selene, you go with Emily. Marie, you’ll be staying behind."
No one voiced any objections, and they all started getting prepared.
Thirty minutes later, the two groups left the house and separated, with Leon’s group exploring the northeast while Selene’s group explored the northwest.
Meanwhile, Marie stayed behind to avoid having thieves raid their house for food supplies.
"You seem surprised by the condition of the people living here. Weren’t you one of them?"
Leon asked as he glanced at Jones from the corner of his eyes.
He could see that the guy who was obviously older than him appeared surprised as they walked through the streets of this slum.
"I..." Jones hesitated, then sighed. "I used to live in the Inner Ring, so I don’t really come here. I never knew life was this poor on the outside."
All around them were starving adults and children. Most of the houses were dilapidated, and you could even see the insides where some people were huddled together in sorrow.
On the streets, beautiful young ladies and even some mature women wore provocative clothing while winking at the young men that passed.
"Young Mister! Don’t you see how I’m in good shape? You can have fun with me for a night, just for two cups of rice!"
"Hey, young man! Although I may look old, I’m very experienced in pleasuring you! You should definitely try me out! Just one packet of noodles will do."
"Big brother, don’t you like my tiny voice? Give me food and I’ll fulfill all your fantasies."
Jones’s expression darkened as he heard those words, and he couldn’t help but look at these people strangely. They were literally selling themselves for meager food.
However, his astonishment didn’t even stop there.
"Hey, brother! Let me tell you, my asshole is definitely tighter than the fat hole of those bitches. You will definitely enjoy yourself as long as you feed me."
There were even men selling themselves to other men! What the hell? When had the world gotten so rotten?
Just as he turned to Leon, he found him looking forward with an unreadable expression. Curious, he turned to look at what Leon was seeing.
There, a mature woman with a burly physique and a scar running down the side of her face, was dragging a drained teenage boy into her room.
It was obvious what she wanted to do with the boy, and judging from his lack of resistance and blank eyes, this wasn’t the first time he had experienced it.
Leon sighed, ’Ah... I really didn’t want to cause trouble.’
