Chapter 135: Zombies from Manhattan

"A pinch?"

Leon repeated her words, a confused glint in his eyes. What could be troubling her so much?

Sighing with a grave expression, Marie explained, "Yesterday, I sent a team under Cassie’s lead to scout the shores, and according to what they saw, it seems the Manhattan zombies are starting to migrate from that place over here."

Instantly, Leon’s expression changed, and a sharp glint flashed in his eyes.

"Migrate, eh?" He muttered to no one in particular, deep in his own thoughts.

Gwen shook her head with a helpless smile. "I thought this kind of thing was bound to happen, but I was at least hoping the River Dragon truly wiped out the zombies."

"That’s highly unlikely," Leon objected. "As you guys call it, it’s a River Dragon. So it’s definitely an aquatic beast. I don’t think it can fight that long on land. It probably retreated after consuming some zombies—if the Zombie King didn’t kill it before then, of course."

Kill it? Gwen shook her head in her mind. With how powerful the River Dragon was, she doubted that any Zombie King could kill it. Still, she didn’t say anything and quietly listened to Leon and Marie.

"If the zombies really cross the bridge, we’ll be the first to fall under their attack. And I don’t think we can survive a horde of several hundred thousand in the least," Marie pointed out, her tone heavy.

Naturally, what she said was true. There was no way they could handle the Manhattan Zombie horde with just over thirty evolvers and some meager ammunition.

"I don’t see any option for us other than fighting or fleeing. But the question is..." She paused, "... to where?"

Hearing this, Gwen’s brown eyes lit up. "I have an idea."

She quickly turned to Leon who was already looking at her.

"From those two guys you caught some time ago, you said they came from a camp in Floyd, right?"

Leon nodded, slowly realizing what she was suggesting.

"You mean we should go join them?" Marie raised an eyebrow, surprise evident in her voice.

She was naturally aware of that base as Leon hadn’t hidden the information. However, after Leon expressed his neutral stance towards that base, no one paid it much attention anymore.

Now that Gwen was talking about it...

"Did I mention joining them?" She rolled her eyes. "I meant taking over that base. Although I don’t know how big the base is, they should have up to a thousand survivors, based on my estimation. If we can control such a base, then we can naturally build a strong army which will be safer than what we have."

Hearing her suggestion, Marie’s grey eyes sparkled, and she turned to look at Leon excitedly.

"What do you think?" She asked. "Just as you mentioned, it’s only a matter of time before they get curious and send another team to this area."

Leon nodded and closed his eyes. He remained silent for about ten seconds, and when he reopened his eyes, those black orbs were perfectly still.

"Marie, how long do you think it’ll take for the zombies to reach here?"

The auburn-haired woman replied immediately, "According to Cassie’s reports, probably two or three weeks."

Leon nodded, then turned around. "Get a car prepared. We’re heading to the Floyd Camp tomorrow morning."

"We?" The woman blinked, asking for clarification.

"Me, you, Selene, and the two prisoners," He answered.

Gwen’s eyes widened, and she hurriedly chased after him. "Just you guys? I want to come along too!"

Glancing at her, Leon calmly explained. "I’ll need you to manage the base while we’re gone. That’s why I’m leaving you behind with the others."

"Oh... I understand," She nodded.

Although she truly understood, she was still disappointed. She couldn’t explain why, but the thought of Leon leaving without her left a faint ache in her chest. Still, but she managed to suppress her discomfort and offer him a smile.

"Don’t worry, leave it to me!"

Leon smiled back, patted her head, then headed inside to look for Selene. As he walked alone, he saw Thyra appear by his side with a teasing smile.

"You do realize that young lady might have feelings for you, right?"

Leon rolled his eyes, but he replied seriously. "Perhaps. But I doubt it. Maybe admiration. After all, she was like a princess in the past. This kind of life filled with danger and adventure is probably something she likes."

"Oh? You’re referencing novels again, aren’t you?" Thyra’s smile widened. "Then are you the Prince Charming she’s going to fall in love with?"

Leon shook his head and said, "Probably not. Reymond would fit that role. A gallant swordsman with great speed and unmatched charm."

"Why do I feel like you’re mocking him?"

"What? Of course, not. He’s really a gallant swordsman. I mean it."

"Tee-hee~ I was just teasing you."

"Really, your jokes have become old."

"Doesn’t matter. You still fall for them anyway~"

"You..."

The two bantered for quite some time, and Leon was relieved that he hadn’t run into anyone, as they might think he was slowly going crazy from talking to himself.

When he eventually found Selene, it was in the library where she was reading an old book about animals. Although animals had now mutated, they still retained some of their old weaknesses.

Therefore, studying them could help whenever she needed to kill mutated beasts.

Leon understood her intention for reading that book, but didn’t comment on it. Instead, he informed her of his plan, as well as the reason for such a trip.

The silver-haired girl was surprised for a moment, then nodded in understanding.

"I understand, then. I’ll prepare for the journey tomorrow."

She was a woman of few words, so that was her only reply before she refocused on the book she was reading.

Leon also didn’t waste any more words as he turned around and left the small library.

.........

The next morning, every evolver of the original group from Clifford University were gathered at the gate of the base, ready to send off the group that was heading to Floyd.

At first, Reymond and Cassie complained and insisted on going for obvious reasons. However, they were easily suppressed by Selene and Leon respectively.

In the end, they could only watch with reluctant expressions as the five humans boarded a modified car that had been prepared beforehand.
