Chapter 7: Chapter 5: Respect the Fate of Others, and Let Go of the Savior Complex

As a third-rate private school, Tian Nan University’s academic quality was mediocre, but thanks to its exorbitant tuition fees, it spared no expense on keeping up appearances.

The campus grounds were massive, spanning an area equivalent to more than 150 football fields.

Its various academic and arts buildings, as well as its public areas, were all meticulously crafted and looked quite magnificent.

But only the students who actually attended knew that the school’s only redeeming qualities were its spacious campus and nice scenery.

The school was usually hands-off with its students, and its rules and regulations were extremely lax.

Many students who had been at the university for years were barely familiar with their professors or even their academic advisors.

The relationships between classmates were even more absurd. The sense of detachment was stronger than at a typical university; everyone treated each other like strangers.

Chen Chong and Xu Jun were a prime example. After two years at the university, they pretty much only knew each other.

At most, they recognized the faces of a few people they saw regularly on their dorm floor. They were complete strangers to everyone else.

They passed through the men’s dormitory area and a garden that served as a partition, arriving at the cafeteria on the south side of campus.

After walking for another twenty-odd minutes, the two passed the library, the gym on the north side, and a few academic buildings.

Further ahead was the Central Square, located near the main school gate.

It was a vast, open space paved with large, European-style tiles. Aside from a few artistic sculptures and some uniquely shaped greenery, the view was completely unobstructed.

Normally, any school speeches or events were held here.

Compared to other areas, a good number of students had gathered in the Central Square.

Several hundred people were scattered about. Some were crouched by the flowerbeds, others milled around the school gate, and some stood in groups of two or three, talking about who-knows-what.

Chen Chong glanced over and noticed a dozen or so female students with their faces in their hands, seemingly sobbing.

Even some of the male students were sitting on the ground in despair, looking as if they’d lost their souls.

It went without saying that these were the students who had yet to accept the fact that the entire school had been transported.

After all, it was only the second day. A single day wasn’t enough time for them to process everything that had happened.

Most of them, if not outright pampered, came from well-to-do families. They had grown up spoiled and had rarely experienced any real hardship.

Now, suddenly transported into the Primitive Jungle with no one to rely on, they had to do everything themselves. Even something as basic as food, which was normally so easy to get, now had to be found with their own hands. It would be a lie to say they weren’t on the verge of breaking down.

But there were plenty of exceptions...

Some students walked past carrying various weapons, while others with backpacks gathered in groups, most likely preparing to head out and explore for food.

They were mostly male, but quite a few female students were mixed in as well.

"Huh? There are teachers here, too?" Chen Chong was a little surprised.

He had spotted a rather mature-looking woman in a group of five. If he hadn’t taken one of her classes and known she was a teacher, he would have mistaken her for a student.

"Yeah, who knew there were still teachers here?"

Xu Jun also saw the mature-looking woman not far away and was just as surprised. He recognized her too, but only from a single class.

Tian Nan University had faculty apartments, but they were almost always empty.

The teaching methods and administrative style here were different from other universities. Most of the teachers were just visiting instructors from other schools who left as soon as their classes were done.

The small number of staff teachers only taught for a few hours a day and had ample free time, which meant they usually didn’t stay on campus overnight.

They either went home or rented apartments off-campus.

The number of teachers who stayed on campus at night was pitifully small.

It was so rare that you’d be surprised to see more than three lights on if you walked past the faculty apartments at night.

So, when Tian Nan University was transported in the early hours of the morning, it was safe to say there were almost no teachers present—only students.

If there had been any teachers, things wouldn’t be this chaotic, and so many students wouldn’t be in despair. At the very least, someone could have organized and encouraged everyone.

’Then again, forget teachers. There probably aren’t even that many students here—maybe only about half...’

After briefly observing the school’s remaining population and getting a general sense of the situation, Chen Chong and Xu Jun headed straight out the main gate.

The two of them felt nothing for the students who remained on campus—lost, crying, and unwilling to accept their new reality.

As part of the group that had adapted the quickest, both Chen Chong and Xu Jun were very clear on one thing.

Now that they had been transported, they had to adapt as quickly as possible.

’The weak will be weeded out.’

’Only those who adapt will survive...’

...

The two entered the jungle. Just like the day before, they used laundry poles to beat the grass in front of them, scaring away any hidden creatures as they walked forward.

Along the way, Chen Chong saw lots of flattened weeds and torn bushes—signs that other students from the school had passed this way.

’It looks like a good number of students have already explored pretty far out.’

"This way," Chen Chong said, taking the lead.

He wasn’t just wandering aimlessly; he was heading in the direction indicated by the intel he had acquired.

He had two pieces of intel, one D-Class and one C-Class, which pointed south and west, respectively.

Chen Chong didn’t have a compass, so he wasn’t certain of the exact cardinal directions, but based on the sun’s position...

’...the main gate should be to the west, and the cafeteria by the side entrance should be to the south.’

Since the distances were roughly the same, he naturally prioritized the higher-ranked location to the west.

The two continued forward. Aside from the birds overhead and the occasional rustle from the distant undergrowth, there was nothing out of the ordinary.

Just then, Xu Jun stopped.

"Brother Chong, look. Are those people under that tree up ahead?"

Chen Chong looked ahead carefully and, sure enough, saw four people.

It was two men and two women, crouching by a fallen tree and doing something or other.

As they drew closer, they saw that the fallen tree was half-rotten, its trunk covered in mushrooms of all sizes.

It was just that... the mushrooms were a bit too colorful.

It was hard to say how long the four had been there, but they had already filled their four backpacks more than halfway.

The other party noticed their arrival. One of them, a young man with single eyelids, picked up an iron pipe lying next to him, his voice carrying a hint of warning.

"Hey, man. We saw these first!"

The other guy and the two women also reached for their weapons, watching Chen Chong and Xu Jun warily.

Chen Chong: "..."

"You’re mistaken. I’m not here to steal your mushrooms. We’re just passing through."

"That’d be for the best," the guy with single eyelids said. He didn’t lower his guard, his eyes still fixed on the pair.

Only after Chen Chong and Xu Jun had walked about ten meters past them did the group lower their weapons and resume picking mushrooms.

"Brother Chong, are those mushrooms even edible?"

After they had walked some distance away, Xu Jun voiced his doubt, recalling the mushrooms’ gaudy, multi-colored appearance.

"How should I know?" Chen Chong shook his head. "Besides shiitake and oyster mushrooms, plus maybe termite mushrooms, I don’t know anything about them."

"Then what if they’re poisonous?" Xu Jun asked, surprised.

"What do you think will happen?" Chen Chong said offhandedly. "A mild dose will make you see things; a strong dose will send you to see your maker."

"Shouldn’t we go tell them?" Xu Jun asked.

"Do you honestly think they’d listen if you went back to warn them? They’d just think you were trying to steal their mushrooms. Besides, what if they’re not poisonous? We don’t even know for sure ourselves."

Recalling their hostile attitude from before, Chen Chong shook his head helplessly.

"You have to respect the fate of others, let go of your savior complex, and just focus on taking care of ourselves..."
