Chapter 8: Chapter 6: Surprise, Cards Can Be Picked Up?
The blazing sun hung high in the sky. It was noon, the hottest time of day, and waves of heat could be felt even deep within the dense forest.
Xu Jun and Chen Chong sat in the shade of a tree. They were having lunch—yogurt, small bread rolls, and the last of their raspberries.
"Two little bread rolls are hardly filling. I wish I’d brought a couple more."
Still feeling unsatisfied, Xu Jun licked the yogurt lid completely clean before setting it down.
"We don’t have much food stored up. We have to conserve it, or we won’t even be able to find enough to eat for the day," Chen Chong said calmly.
"This Primitive Jungle is full of game, but it’s a shame we have zero hunting experience and no decent tools. All we can do is pick wild fruit. Sigh."
Xu Jun sighed and hefted the bag in his hand. It felt heavy, as if packed full.
It was filled with the wild fruit the two had found along the way.
It had to be said, this Primitive Jungle was rich in resources. They had spotted numerous herbivores along their path.
There were also many other grass-eating animals they couldn’t name. They didn’t know if it was due to their own lack of knowledge or if these creatures were "natives" just like the Overlord Wolf.
There was plenty of game, but unfortunately, the two of them, with not a shred of hunting experience, could only stare helplessly.
Besides the animals, there was also plenty of vegetation laden with wild fruit.
Of course, most of it was unrecognizable, with strange shapes and markings that didn’t resemble any plants from Earth.
Unsure if any of it was edible, the two naturally had to pass. After all, they weren’t desperate enough to gamble with their lives just yet.
Fortunately, after walking for nearly two hours, they found a familiar plant...
Wild kiwi fruit!
This was the good stuff—sweet and sour, high in vitamin C, and very filling.
The only downside was that you couldn’t eat too much, or your teeth would be too sensitive to even bite into tofu the next day.
Without a second thought, the two of them pulled out the two bags they had prepared. Each filled a bag to the brim, with what they estimated to be about fifty kiwis apiece.
If they’d had more bags, they would have picked even more.
Even though they couldn’t carry everything back at once, Chen Chong memorized the location of the wild kiwi tree, marking it as a resource point they could return to later.
"True, our lack of hunting experience is our biggest weakness. Luckily, I watch a lot of foreign survival shows, so I know a few simple traps."
Chen Chong said slowly as he pulled out a wild kiwi.
"We can’t go after large animals, but catching smaller prey shouldn’t be too hard. We’ll need some tools, though. I’ll try to make some when we get back."
"The survival show you’re talking about... you mean the one with Brother Bei?" Xu Jun asked.
"And the one about starving with Brother De," Chen Chong added.
"I used to watch both of those all the time! Now that you mention it, I remember a few simple traps, too. I’ll try to rig some up when we get back." Xu Jun sounded excited, but then his face fell. "It’s a shame we can’t go near the river. Fishing seems like it would be easier."
"Don’t worry, we’ll get our chance soon enough." Chen Chong didn’t elaborate.
Although the river was home to dangerous creatures like the Giant Catfish, getting meat from the water would be far less difficult than hunting in the jungle.
With so many people from the school driven by hunger, it was only a matter of time before some of the braver ones made an attempt.
As Chen Chong saw it, the river’s greatest danger was the unknown; he had no idea how many creatures like the Giant Catfish it contained.
If there was only one, that would be manageable. As long as they stayed out of the deep water, they should be fine.
But if there was more than one...
Then it would be best to stay away from the riverbank altogether.
So when would they be able to find out for sure?
According to Chen Chong’s calculations, if nothing unexpected happened, someone would have already gone today...
...
「By the river.」
Even though someone had died here the day before, everyone knew the river held a wealth of resources. A crowd had gathered again today, though no one dared venture too close to the water’s edge.
Just then, however, a group of students carrying fishing rods and tackle boxes charged forward.
Seeing the river stretch out as far as the eye could see, the young man in the lead leaped into the air with excitement.
"A river this big? I never thought that even after coming to another world, our Fishing Club would get a chance to shine! We never had a proper venue on campus, but we don’t have to hold back anymore! Let’s go, everyone, charge!"
With that, dozens of people charged toward the riverbank as if they’d just seen a goddess, completely losing their minds.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, man!" A long-haired young man grabbed one of the students rushing past with a fishing rod. "Don’t fish here," he warned kindly. "This river isn’t safe."
"Not safe?" the student he’d stopped asked, looking confused.
"You haven’t heard?"
The long-haired young man thought to himself, ’Just as I thought. No wonder they’re not scared at all.’
"Listen, two people died here yesterday. I heard there’s a fish in there that’s over ten meters long—big as a monster. The man-eating kind."
"A fish over ten meters long?" The young man with the fishing rod was stunned.
"Yeah!"
The long-haired young man felt a swell of pride. For no other reason than he’d done a good deed and stopped a fellow student from getting himself killed. He was about to say more, but to his surprise...
"HOLY SHIT! A meter-class... a GIANT-METER-CLASS lunker?!"
The young angler broke into a manic grin, drool trickling from the corner of his mouth. His eyes practically glowed green with greed.
If the long-haired young man hadn’t said anything, it would’ve been one thing. But the moment he mentioned a ten-meter fish, the angler took off even faster, shouting as he ran.
"President! There’s a super-giant-meter lunker in this river! If we land it, we’ll bring glory to our ancestors! GLORY TO OUR ANCESTORS!"
The long-haired young man was left dumbfounded, watching him disappear into the distance.
’So this is the legendary hardcore angler?’
...
「Meanwhile, elsewhere.」
"Holy crap, Brother Chong, you’re incredible!"
Xu Jun and Chen Chong were squatting on a small hill, both grinning from ear to ear as they fiddled with the object in their hands.
"I can’t believe you can just find these things lying around. This is a real eye-opener!"
In Chen Chong’s hand was a very familiar object—a Card!
Chen Chong hadn’t expected that the "unexpected harvest" promised by the C-Class intel would actually be a Card.
A green-glowing C-Class Card, no less.
Talk about unexpected.
"Brother Chong, what does this Card do? Why is there a man drawn on it?"
His excitement giving way to curiosity, Xu Jun realized this was the first time he’d seen this type of Card. It was completely different from the Resource Card that gave them the dagger, or the Building Card he hadn’t gotten a chance to use.
Instead of an item, it depicted a bare-chested, long-haired, powerfully built man with solid muscles.
"Only one way to find out," Chen Chong replied, his own curiosity piqued. He focused his thoughts on the Card in his hand.
An instant later, a stream of information flooded his mind...
