Chapter 6: Chapter 4: Scavenging the Lockers, Checking Supplies
Having gone to bed early, Chen Chong and Xu Jun woke up naturally at first light.
The first thing they did after waking up was, naturally, to eat breakfast.
"The raspberries we picked yesterday are still okay, just a little wilted. I wonder if they’ll last until tonight?" Xu Jun said, weighing the two bags of berries in his hands.
"Let’s eat them all. It’s not that much anyway. We can make two packs of instant noodles, too."
"Okay. I’ll boil the bird eggs we found yesterday with them."
"Sounds good."
Chen Chong nodded. ’I don’t know what kind of bird laid these eggs, but the daily settlement said they were edible, so we can eat them without any worries.’
They were both young men in their twenties; raspberries alone wouldn’t be enough.
Besides, they had to go out exploring for food, which burned a ton of energy. If they couldn’t get enough calories, they’d probably collapse before the afternoon was over.
For the time being, they weren’t desperately short on food. The main issue was that after they were transported here, their dorm had lost power and water. The electric kettle and induction stove were useless. If they wanted to cook, they had to start a fire the old-fashioned way.
Fortunately, every dorm room had a balcony, so they didn’t have to worry about suffocating from the smoke.
They ripped a few hard wooden planks off an empty bunk, tied them together with metal clothes hangers, and fashioned a makeshift rack.
Then they could place a pot on top of it to cook.
As for how to start the fire?
What university dorm room doesn’t have a lighter or two lying around?
Neither Xu Jun nor Chen Chong smoked, but their other two roommates did. The roommates were gone, but they had left behind used lighters on their desks.
As for kindling, the wooden planks and some books would work perfectly fine.
’Anyway, the entire school has been transported to another world. Our textbooks are just scrap paper now.’
’Our other two roommates aren’t coming back, so it’s not a big deal if we take their beds apart...’
As this thought crossed his mind, Chen Chong suddenly spoke up. "Hey, our roommates’ lockers are locked. You think there might be any food inside?"
"Yeah! How did we not think of that? I’ll go pry them open right now!"
Xu Jun, who had just slurped up a mouthful of noodles, paused. He immediately shot to his feet, a man of action.
Chen Chong downed the last of his broth and followed.
Xu Jun wedged a spoon into the seam of the locker door and tried to pry it open. But after a good while of trying, the spoon was bent, and the door hadn’t moved an inch.
"Dammit. This school builds crappy dorms, but they sure bought some solid lockers."
"Stand back. My turn."
Chen Chong picked up the Fire Axe from the lower bunk, gathered all his strength, and brought it down.
CLANG!
The sound of metal on metal rang out.
The locker was tough, true, but it was no match for the Fire Axe.
In just two or three swings, the door was so deformed it was no longer secure.
He gave the second locker door the same treatment, battering it into a wreck.
They peered inside. The first locker was mostly empty; aside from a few articles of clothing and a pair of scissors, it only held some books and electronics.
Back in the day, this stuff would have been worth something. Now, it was all useless crap.
"Nothing useful at all?" Xu Jun sounded disappointed.
They moved on to the second locker. This time, they weren’t disappointed.
Inside, along with the usual clothes and books, they found five boxes of self-heating rice, two unopened bars of sulfur soap, and four or five boxes of cold and fever medicine.
"Jackpot!" Xu Jun grinned, holding up the five boxes of rice. "This is enough to last us another two days, isn’t it?"
"Now *this* is the good stuff!"
Chen Chong wasn’t as excited about the rice. His eyes were fixed happily on the two bars of sulfur soap and the medicine.
’In our current situation, food is priority number one, but starving for a few days won’t kill you. Getting a cut infected or coming down with a fever, though? That could be a death sentence.’
Regular soap could clean you, sure, but it was nothing compared to sulfur soap.
The former was antibacterial; the latter was bactericidal—and a broad-spectrum one at that.
It could even be used to treat skin conditions.
Its only drawback was the unpleasant, sulfurous smell. Otherwise, it was the ultimate weapon against germs.
’Perfect for our current situation of trekking through the deep woods every day...’
’And the cold medicine, that goes without saying. Even though it was just common, over-the-counter stuff, in a place with no hospitals, it was incredibly precious.’
’Useless in normal times, but a strategic-level resource when you actually needed it!’
The school had a nurse’s office, but just like the library that was supposedly "under renovation," it had long been nothing more than a decoration.
In all his years at the university, Chen Chong had never once seen its doors open. He doubted there was even a bottle of disinfectant inside, let alone any actual medicine.
It was the same story with the library. The official word was that it was closed for renovations and all the books had been moved out, but years had passed and it was still not done. They’d barely even seen any construction work.
’Who knew if the renovation was real and just delayed, or if the school administration was just too cheap to bother and had shelved the project indefinitely...’
"Even though we never really got along with those two, we really owe them one for this." Understanding the value of their find, Xu Jun couldn’t help but grin.
Next, Chen Chong and Xu Jun took inventory of everything in their dorm room, piling up the useful items.
Food: one case of instant noodle cups with 10 remaining; 23 small bags of bread rolls; 7 ham sausages; 7 bottles of yogurt drink; 5 small bottles of mineral water; one large water cooler jug that was half-full, with about 5 liters left; and the 5 boxes of self-heating rice they had just found.
Toiletries: half a bottle of body wash, a full bottle of shampoo, two bars of bath soap, one bar of laundry soap, half a bag of laundry detergent, and the two new bars of sulfur soap.
Toilet paper was running low, with only two rolls left.
Tools were even scarcer—practically nonexistent. They had one pot, two bowls, and some leftover seasonings from the times they had secretly made hot pot in their room.
Weapons: one iron laundry pole, the Fire Axe, and a dagger.
As for clothes, they didn’t bother counting; they each had three or four outfits.
Medicine was scarce. They only had the 5 boxes they’d just found: 4 boxes of common cold remedies and one box of ibuprofen for fever and pain.
"I’ve got half a box of digestive aids. You want ’em?"
Xu Jun produced half a box of the tablets from somewhere and offered them.
Chen Chong was speechless.
’We’re about to starve to death, and he’s worried about digestion? Does he want to get hungry *faster*?’
’What a genius.’
’Still, it was medicine, so he kept it...’
Their electronics—phones, laptops, Bluetooth earbuds—had long since died. They were about as useful as scrap metal now.
Excluding their bedding and a couple of washbasins, this was the sum total of their possessions—so little they could pack up and leave at a moment’s notice.
"It’s about time. We should get going."
"Alright. Let’s bring two big, empty water bottles. We should probably avoid the river. Maybe we can find a safer water source somewhere else."
"Good call. I almost forgot about that..."
After locking the food and medicine in the metal locker, Chen Chong tucked the Refined Iron dagger he’d acquired last night into his waistband. He then grabbed the laundry pole and the two water bottles.
Xu Jun took the Fire Axe and brought the leftover raspberries with him, planning to eat them as a snack while they were out.
The hallway outside was dead quiet. As expected, the other students were either still asleep or had already gone out to scavenge for food.
They locked the door to their room and headed downstairs.
"Brother Chong, why aren’t we taking the back door? It’s a longer walk to the main entrance, isn’t it?" Xu Jun asked, confused.
Chen Chong recalled the piece of intel he’d received in the early hours of the morning: ’Tomorrow, a Fear Wolf will appear again near the back door, but it won’t return after that.’
’He wasn’t sure if the intel was reliable, but it was better to be safe than sorry.’
"We already scouted the area by the back door yesterday. Other than the river, there weren’t many resources. Let’s check out the other direction today and get a better lay of the land around campus."
"Good point." Xu Jun didn’t question it. ’My brain’s not as quick as my buddy’s, so I should just listen to him.’
There was one more thing Chen Chong hadn’t said. ’The other two pieces of intel point to locations near the main entrance.’
’I have to go see what’s really there...’
