Chapter 5: Chapter 3: I’ll Carry You, Daily Intel
Chen Chong was just too tired, too exhausted. All he wanted to do was sleep.
It wasn’t just physical fatigue. The constant high alert he’d maintained while exploring the jungle on his first day in this world had been mentally taxing, doubling his exhaustion.
He’d seemingly been awake for two days and one night, but it felt more like three days and three nights. He was so tired, a thunderclap wouldn’t have woken him.
But he woke up anyway.
It wasn’t the earlier noise that had roused him, but...
"Brother Chong, Brother Chong!"
He saw Xu Jun, clad only in a pair of boxers with his hair a bird’s nest, shaking him awake from the bedside, his face a mixture of tension and excitement.
"From now on, you’re gonna have to call me ’big bro.’ I’m gonna carry you!"
"Huh?" Chen Chong’s eyes were heavy with sleep, his face a mask of confusion.
He stared at Xu Jun, who was as excited as if he’d won the lottery, and couldn’t make heads or tails of it. What had gotten into the guy?
The tension and excitement on Xu Jun’s face grew even more intense.
The way he fidgeted, face flushed, words caught in his throat, twisting about with a smile playing on his lips... he looked exactly like a teenage girl mustering up the courage to confess to her crush.
Watching him, Chen Chong, half-lying in bed, felt his lips twitch. He was genuinely afraid Xu Jun’s next words would be "Big brother~."
’I’m seriously going to kill him.’
’Getting isekai’d was annoying enough. Now my best friend is turning gay on me? Might as well just end it all.’
Finally...
After brewing for what felt like an eternity, Xu Jun finally spoke.
"I’ve got a golden finger! I’m even telling you my biggest secret! Letting you call me ’big bro’ is a bargain—you should be calling me ’Godfather’!"
"Huh?" Chen Chong was even more confused.
"Hahaha!"
Xu Jun was still cackling, hands on his hips, laughing with an insufferable swagger.
"I never expected this, I never expected this! So this is my true purpose for coming to this world?"
At this, Xu Jun patted Chen Chong’s shoulder with a wide grin and said in a heartfelt tone:
"Chong, my boy, you have to understand, this is my biggest secret. Don’t say I don’t treat you like a brother, I’m telling you everything. You have to keep this a secret for me. From now on, I’ll carry you, and we’ll live the high life together!"
Chen Chong sat up and remained silent for a long time...
"This system you’re talking about... is it a ’daily settlement’?"
"Haha—Hic?" It was Xu Jun’s turn to be stunned. The smile froze on his face. "You... How do you know?"
"Because I have one too." With a deadpan expression, Chen Chong pulled out a Card that was glowing with a green light.
There was nothing extra on it. Besides the green back, the front was only engraved with the image of a black dagger.
Xu Jun’s eyes widened as he stared at the Card, then back at Chen Chong. He, too, pulled a Card from behind his back.
The Card was the same shape as the dagger Card, but it wasn’t green. It emitted a white light, its back was also white, and the image on the front was a fence.
The fence didn’t look special, like a crude structure used for temporarily penning small animals—something anyone with hands could make.
"This thing isn’t exclusive to me? You mean you have one too?"
Xu Jun’s face fell. His current disappointment was as immense as his earlier excitement.
"Yep. And I’m guessing it’s not just me. Everyone in the school probably has one."
Chen Chong looked at Xu Jun with an amused expression.
"What?"
Xu Jun was dumbfounded. "No way, right?"
"We’ll find out tomorrow if it’s true or not, won’t we?" Chen Chong smiled.
He had heard the so-called daily settlement announcement while he was sound asleep but had been so tired he’d thought it was a dream.
Now that Xu Jun had shaken him awake, he carefully recalled the details. It seemed to be... something about getting a score based on his performance?
’Collected some edible berries and edible bird eggs?’
’Was the score 10 points or 5 points?’
He remembered the Rating more clearly, though. It was C-Class.
’But why is mine glowing green, while Xu Jun’s is glowing white?’
The moment Chen Chong held the Card, he understood its function as a stream of information flooded his mind.
It was a Resource Card. Nothing special, just a dagger forged from Refined Iron.
Compared to most modern steel weapons, a Refined Iron weapon was rather mediocre.
It was inferior in both hardness and sharpness and rusted easily, requiring regular sharpening and maintenance.
But in this post-transmigration world, where the school’s supplies offered almost no effective weapons, it was still a decent piece of equipment.
It was a good choice for both self-defense and cutting things.
’Use!’
With a thought from Chen Chong, the Card vanished. In its place in his hand was a black dagger, about 20cm long with a sharpened edge.
The dagger was quite heavy. He could feel a distinct chill from it, and its appearance was rather intimidating.
He casually swiped it against the bedsheet, and it sliced open a tear with ease.
"Hmm, very sharp," Chen Chong couldn’t help but remark.
Whether in terms of texture or sharpness, this dagger was exceptionally good.
"What about your... fence? What is it?"
Chen Chong looked at Xu Jun, curious about the Card his good friend had received.
"This?" Xu Jun hadn’t yet recovered from the shock of not being the chosen one. He answered listlessly, "All I know is that it’s a Building Card. Apparently, if I use this thing to raise animals, they get a 20% daily growth speed bonus. That’s it."
"That powerful?" Chen Chong was a little surprised.
A 20% daily growth speed bonus meant that raising an animal for ten days was equivalent to someone else raising it for twelve.
In the short term, it just meant a couple of extra days, which didn’t seem like much.
But if you extended the time period and increased the number of animals, the efficiency of breeding and the rate at which animals were ready for slaughter would reach terrifying levels.
"What’s so great about it?" Xu Jun said with some dissatisfaction. "It’s only five square meters. That’s only big enough for bamboo rats or rabbits. Even chickens would find it crowded. Besides, you need to have animals to raise in the first place. It’s not as useful as your dagger."
"Then you can have this dagger." Chen Chong directly offered it to him.
Xu Jun was taken aback but quickly waved his hands to refuse.
"Forget it, Brother Chong. You already gave me the Fire Axe. Besides, we’re always together like Gold Horn and Silver Horn. It’s the same whether you have the dagger or I do."
"True." Chen Chong took back the dagger, then teased, "Feeling down so you’re not even calling me ’little brother Chong’ anymore? Weren’t you the one who wanted to be my godfather and carry me?"
Xu Jun gave a bitter smile. "I was just joking, Brother Chong. Don’t take it to heart and let it affect our friendship."
Chen Chong smiled. He naturally knew Xu Jun meant no harm.
After two years together, no one knew his personality better than him. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have become such good friends.
’Besides, for someone who doesn’t like to show off, when he mistakenly thought the daily settlement was his alone, his first instinct in the face of such a huge secret wasn’t to kick me aside or hide it, but to immediately share it with me and even make me promise to keep it a secret for him...’
’Such unconditional trust, to be honest, was quite touching.’
’He really is a good brother, closer than a blood-related one.’
Chen Chong and Xu Jun lay back down on their beds. A moment later, snores came from the side.
Staring at the dagger in his hand, Chen Chong’s feelings were incredibly complex. It seemed this transmigration business was even more magical than he had imagined.
He had managed to get some information out of Xu Jun.
His daily settlement was similar to his own: some berries and three bird eggs.
The white Card came with a score of 15 points and a D- Rating.
Their gains and scores were exactly the same, except for the final Rating.
’C... is higher than D, right?’
’Does that mean a green Card is also rarer than a white Card?’
’Why did Xu Jun and I have the same gains, even splitting the six bird eggs evenly, yet our Ratings are different?’
’Also, besides the daily settlement, how come I...’
’...got an extra ’Daily Intel’?’
[D-Level Intel: A valuable item will appear within one kilometer to the south.]
[C-Level Intel: 1200 meters directly west, going there will yield an unexpected harvest.]
[B-Level Intel: Tomorrow, near the back gate, the Fear Wolves will appear again, but they will not return after that.]
Looking at these three pieces of information, Chen Chong’s brow furrowed deeper.
’Fear Wolves... Are those the seven Overlord Wolves?’
’This so-called ’Daily Intel,’ why doesn’t Xu Jun have it?’
’What could the "item" and "harvest" mentioned here be?’
’Should I even trust this?’
’Whatever. I’ll stop thinking about it. I’ll just go check it out tomorrow and see for myself.’
...
「Soon, the sky began to brighten.」
In dorm 302 on the third floor, Huang Liang, nicknamed Er Gouzi, had been tossing and turning all night, unable to sleep.
After a whole night of deliberation, he gritted his teeth and made a decision.
He went up to dorm 529 on the fifth floor. He was about to knock, but he noticed the door seemed to be ajar.
He nervously glanced around, and after making sure no one was there, he stepped inside.
Although the dorm was dark, he moved with practiced familiarity to a specific bed.
"Bro, bro..."
Huang Liang gently shook the snoring person on the bed, his movements light, afraid of waking the others in the dorm.
But don’t think he was being kind. It was because...
"Er... Er Gouzi?" The man who was shaken awake opened his eyes blearily. Seeing it was his younger brother, he immediately flared up. "What the fuck are you doing here instead of sleep—"
Before he could finish, Huang Liang clamped a hand over his mouth.
"Bro, be quiet! I have a secret to tell you. Don’t let anyone else hear. Come outside with me."
The man was furious. He had been in pain all night and had only just managed to fall asleep as dawn approached and the drowsiness finally overpowered the pain.
Now that he was awake, he could once again feel the piercing pain all over his body.
"Bro, come on!" Seeing the man not moving, Huang Liang, who had already reached the door, waved his hand impatiently.
Finally, the man threw on a yellow jacket and came out.
"What’s the big deal, acting all mysterious... Mmph!"
His mouth was covered again. Huang Liang whispered, "Bro, keep it down. No one can hear about this."
"Al... alright."
The man pulled his hand away, spat twice in disgust, wiped his mouth, and then lowered his voice.
"You little shit, you’re always jerking off in the middle of the night without washing your hands. Don’t you fucking cover my mouth with your hands! Do it again and I’ll beat the shit out of you!"
"I know, bro. I’m just nervous, and I’m too excited," Huang Liang said with a sheepish grin.
A smirk pulled at the corner of the man’s mouth. "So mysterious. Don’t tell me you stole a classmate’s phone or gold necklace again? Let me tell you, this isn’t like before we transmigrated. That stuff is useless now. If you’re gonna steal, steal some food."
"That’s not it, bro. I..." Huang Liang looked around again, then said with a mix of tension and excitement, "I awakened a system! We’re gonna be the protagonists from now on, you know? Like, a system from a novel, a really awesome one!"
"What the hell are you talking about?" The man was confused. He didn’t read novels and had no idea what a system was.
He thought Huang Liang had stolen some kind of computer system, but could you even steal something virtual like that?
Weren’t graphics cards the most valuable things to steal?
"Bro, look!" Huang Liang knew he couldn’t explain it clearly to his non-novel-reading brother, so he took out a Card glowing with white light.
The man froze...
"So... for this thing, you came all the way here at the crack of dawn and dragged me out of bed?"
"W-well, yeah!" Huang Liang nodded proudly and continued to explain the wonderful uses of the Card in his hand, completely oblivious to his older brother’s face growing darker and his fists clenching tighter.
"FUCK!"
With a roar, the man launched a flying kick.
Then, he went berserk, unleashing a flurry of kicks on Huang Liang.
"You motherfucker! You think you’re the only one in your dorm?! I already knew about the daily settlement and the Cards last night!"
"Bro, stop kicking, it hurts! It hurts! The scrapes from yesterday haven’t healed yet! It hurts..."
The huge commotion caused many people on the fifth floor to poke their heads out.
After a good few minutes of kicking, the man finally vented his anger. He spat on the ground, then clutched at the wounds on his body that had been aggravated by the drastic movements and went back into his dorm.
Lying on the ground was Huang Liang, a.k.a. Er Gouzi.
Two clear streams of tears trickled from the corners of his eyes. His heart was filled with bitterness.
’Is this really my own brother?’
’Kicking me like this?’
’He’s not even treating me like a human being!’
’Yesterday, not only did I fail to pick any raspberries, but I also got scraped up all over. Today, my own brother kicks the crap out of me. Life is too hard.’
More tears slid from the corners of his eyes...
