Chapter 38: Chapter 36: Visitors from the Club, Recruitment or a Threat?
Chen Chong and Wang Biao both looked toward the door.
’Who would be knocking at this hour?’
’Could it be someone from the Swordsmanship Club dropping by for a visit?’
Puzzled, Chen Chong peered through the door’s peephole.
He saw four or five unfamiliar faces standing outside. They weren’t members of the Swordsmanship Club.
"Who is it?" Chen Chong asked cautiously, still staring outside.
Zhang Meng, standing beside Fan Kai, spoke up. "Chen Chong, it’s me, Zhang Meng. I live on the sixth floor of the men’s dorm, same as you. We’ve seen each other around a few times. You probably remember me, right?"
"Don’t worry, we mean no harm. We just want to discuss something with you. Is now a good time?"
’Zhang Meng?’
’Someone from the Fighting Club?’
Chen Chong had a vague impression of him. He did live on the sixth floor.
’But they hadn’t had any dealings in two years. Why was he looking for me now?’
Despite his suspicions, since they had put it that way, Chen Chong decided to open the door and see what they wanted.
Before opening the door, he glanced back and gave Wang Biao a meaningful look.
Wang Biao understood immediately.
He immediately snatched the Fire Axe from the table and hid behind the door.
Even Xu Jun and Jia Wen, who had been sitting on the balcony watching the smoked meat, came over. They grabbed their weapons and hid to one side, just in case.
CREAK—
As the door opened, Chen Chong kept his distance, revealing only half his face.
Zhang Meng’s hearty, smiling face came into view.
But combined with his tough, rugged features and the scar at the corner of his mouth, he didn’t exactly look like a good guy.
"Hahaha, see? I knew you’d remember me, Chen Chong!"
"Here, let me introduce you. This is the president of our club, Fan Kai. He’s my boss."
"A pleasure to meet you, friend. I hope you don’t mind us dropping by unannounced."
Fan Kai was smiling, and his tone was very mild. He nodded to someone at his side.
A member came forward, holding a box.
"We heard you hunted a deer. With that much meat, you’ll surely need to cure it to preserve it all. This is a small welcoming gift. We hope you’ll accept it."
Chen Chong’s brow furrowed slightly as he looked at the yellowish-black chunks of salt in the box.
’This doesn’t look like modern, refined salt.’
Perhaps sensing Chen Chong’s confusion, Fan Kai continued to explain with a smile:
"This salt comes from our Fighting Club’s salt well. It’s been roughly processed and refined. While it’s not on par with refined salt, it’s perfectly fine for curing meat or for everyday use."
’A salt well?’
’Another completely new type of structure.’
Chen Chong didn’t take the box. Instead, he looked at Fan Kai.
"President Fan, you know where I moved, and you know I hunted a deer. You seem to be paying very close attention to me."
Hearing the insinuation in Chen Chong’s words, Fan Kai kept his friendly smile.
"You’ve misunderstood, my friend. I haven’t had anyone secretly investigating you. It’s just that a couple of days ago, you taught Du Ming from the Student Union a lesson on the sixth floor. You’ve become somewhat well-known among the male students."
"It’s only natural that people noticed you moving. I just heard about it through the grapevine."
"Same thing with the deer. Last night, some of our club members happened to be at the side gate and saw you by chance..."
Chen Chong didn’t know Fan Kai well, and he had no interest in hearing his explanations.
’That was a load of crap, stuff you’d tell a kid. I moved at night. Very few people saw me, and they wouldn’t have known where I was going.’
’As if people have nothing better to do than spread rumors about it?’
’There’s no way they’d know my recent movements so clearly unless they were deliberately asking around.’
"Cut the pleasantries. What do you want?"
"A straightforward man, I like it. In that case, I’ll be direct as well. I’m here to invite you to join our Fighting Club."
"Join the Fighting Club?" Chen Chong frowned.
Fan Kai nodded. "That’s right. I know there are four of you. If I’m not mistaken, aside from Xu Jun, the other two were recruited, right? And their levels aren’t low, either."
"Frankly, among all the unaffiliated students, your group of four is developing the best. Your strength is considerable, and that’s precisely why I came to visit and extend this invitation."
"Sorry, not interested," Chen Chong said, and moved to close the door.
Fan Kai’s hand shot out, stopping the door.
"It won’t hurt to hear me out before you refuse. You beat up Du Ming, which means you’ve already made an enemy of the Student Union—no, the Survival Association. You saw what Sima did today. They’re going to expand rapidly in a very short time."
"Sima is an extremely ambitious person, and he’s also very vindictive. The only reason he hasn’t come for revenge is that he’s busy recruiting. The moment he’s free, he absolutely won’t let you off the hook."
"When he does come for you, if you don’t have a powerful backer, I’m afraid your odds won’t be good."
"Join our Fighting Club, and I can guarantee you a daily share of the salt from our well. You’re a smart man; you should know how much more important salt will become as time goes on."
"Plus, with the Fighting Club backing you, the Survival Association won’t dare to come after you. This is a win-win situation. What do you say?"
"Sorry, I’m still not interested," Chen Chong refused again.
The reason was simple. Although he didn’t know Fan Kai, he had heard rumors about the Fighting Club.
The club’s members had a terrible reputation at school. They used their superior fighting skills to bully other students all the time.
Hogging the sports courts, commandeering cafeteria tables, cutting in line—that sort of bullying was commonplace for them.
On top of that, the Fighting Club had the most hostile relationship with the Survival Association.
’Joining them would mean I’d just be a weapon for them to use, regardless of whether or not I had a grudge against the Survival Association...’
"Won’t you reconsider, my friend?"
"You should know that if you agree, we become friends. But if you refuse, you might just gain another enemy in addition to the Survival Association."
Fan Kai blocked the door again, and Chen Chong’s expression darkened.
Standing behind Fan Kai, Zhang Meng’s expression changed as well.
’Why is the boss acting differently than we agreed?’
’Didn’t we agree that even if we couldn’t recruit him, we must not offend him, and should try to be on good terms if possible?’
’So why now...’
"Are you threatening me?" Chen Chong’s eyes narrowed, his voice turning cold.
Fan Kai’s expression turned icy as well, and he stared right back at Chen Chong.
Wang Biao, Xu Jun, and Jia Wen, hiding behind the door, had naturally heard the entire exchange.
They had hidden just in case the visitors tried a sneak attack, hoping to catch them off guard.
But now that things were about to turn ugly, there was no point in hiding anymore.
"So, are we doing this?"
Xu Jun stepped out, a thuggish look on his face, and took his Fire Axe from Wang Biao’s hands.
Jia Wen said nothing, simply drawing his large blade.
Wang Biao didn’t nock an arrow. Instead, he stood beside Chen Chong and stared daggers at the other party. In a chaotic brawl, he preferred to use his fists.
At a single word from Chen Chong, the three of them would attack without the slightest hesitation.
"Boss..."
Zhang Meng looked nervously at Fan Kai.
He wasn’t someone who was afraid of trouble, nor was he scared of a fight.
But he had been the one to suggest recruiting him.
He also found himself, for some strange reason, taking a liking to Chen Chong.
He would have been thrilled if they could recruit him, but even if they couldn’t, they could at least become friends.
Making an enemy of him was the last thing he wanted.
’If a fight really breaks out, won’t this whole thing have backfired because of my good intentions?’
’Ever since the ’transversal’, the Boss has become more and more of a stranger. His actions have grown increasingly extreme.’
’We had a clear plan, but he went back on it at the last second.’
’Does he really want to lead his brothers to a better future?’
’Or does he just want to one-up Sima?’
’Or is this all just about his own dream of reshaping the world...?’
