Chapter 39: Chapter 37: Fish Cage, Anti-bird Net

Five from the Fighting Club. Four in Chen Chong’s group.

The two groups stood at the doorway, staring each other down. The atmosphere was incredibly tense, and a fight could break out at any second.

Just then, Fan Kai smiled.

"Just a joke, friend. No offense."

Zhang Meng breathed a sigh of relief.

Chen Chong continued to stare at him, his expression unchanged. "President Fan, I’d advise against playing these kinds of jokes on me. The consequences will be severe."

Fan Kai didn’t get angry and kept smiling. "My apologies, that was my mistake. Even if you’re unwilling to join us, we can still be friends, can’t we?"

"The enemy of my enemy is my friend, as they say. We’ll be crossing paths again in the future. If you change your mind, feel free to find me anytime. I live on the first floor of this building."

"And even if you still don’t want to join, you can come to me anytime you need help."

"Oh, right, I’ll leave this case of salt for you. A small token of my goodwill..."

With that, Fan Kai led his men away, leaving behind a case of unrefined salt.

Watching them leave, Chen Chong formed his first real impression of the Fighting Club’s president, a man who had been riding high since they’d all been transported here.

’A smiling tiger, full of ambition.’

’Best to keep my distance from people like him...’

Xu Jun relaxed as well, looking at the salt on the ground. "Damn, who gives a damn about a case of salt? Let’s just throw it out!"

Chen Chong stopped him. "It’s free stuff. Why wouldn’t we take it?"

Xu Jun was stunned. "So... I’ll move it inside?"

"Forget it. I don’t trust it enough to use it. What if he spat in it or something?" Chen Chong shook his head.

Xu Jun was confused. "So are we keeping it or not?"

Chen Chong kicked the case and thought for a moment. "I won’t be using it, but let’s trade it for supplies tomorrow. Salt is a rare commodity, after all. Even if it’s not refined salt, we should be able to trade it for some food."

"Got it." Xu Jun started to move the case inside.

As they were closing the door, Chen Chong added a pointed reminder.

"Don’t trade this to the regular students. I heard the Survival Association is collecting supplies. Find someone they don’t recognize to trade it to them. We don’t get along with them anyway. If they have problems after eating it, we can expose the Fighting Club and let them fight it out."

"Brother Chong, you’re so wicked. I love it."

"Get lost..."

...

「Night fell.」

Chen Chong and his three friends sat on the balcony, a single candle burning beside them.

The wood for smoking meat couldn’t have open flames; the process relied on the smoke generated by high internal heat.

That’s why damp firewood from the forest, still full of moisture, was actually more effective.

Gazing at the deer meat hanging densely overhead, the four of them had expressions of both bliss and agony.

Bliss, because this much meat would last them a long, long time.

Agony, because smoking meat wasn’t a one or two-day affair. For the cured cuts, especially, they would have to watch the meat constantly for the next several days...

"That’s about it. The meat is well-smoked for today. Let it air out overnight, and we’ll continue smoking it tomorrow."

Looking at the slightly hardened deer meat, Chen Chong was very satisfied.

The three types of preserved meat, such as the brined and cured cuts, all needed to be smoked and air-dried. From the looks of it, there hadn’t been any problems.

It was no small feat for their first attempt to go so smoothly.

’We’ll definitely hunt other prey in the future. There’ll be plenty more scenes like this.’

’I have to master techniques like smoking and curing meat...’

The school had no electricity in this new world, so at night, it was pitch-black.

Those in better conditions still had stored candles; those in poor conditions had no choice but to stare blankly at the moon.

Although Chen Chong’s group had a few candles, they had nothing to do.

After chatting in the living room for a while, they all returned to their own rooms...

「In the blink of an eye, the moon set and the sun rose.」

Chen Chong woke up and saw the Card beside him.

’Just one Card today?’

’A fish cage... Excellent!’

’Hunting tools are the most valuable things in our current environment.’

He wasn’t surprised to get a score of only 30.

After all, he basically did nothing yesterday, so a low score was to be expected.

What was surprising was that the salt from Fan Kai had actually been counted toward his score.

’It seems gifts from others also contribute to the score...’

[Card Type: Resource Card · Fish Cage]

[Rating: C-Class]

[Description: An exceptionally well-made fish cage. It is sturdier and more durable than a standard version and will last a long time.]

"I can find a place to test it in the water today."

Chen Chong put away the Card, deciding to wait until he was near water to use it.

Just then, there was a knock on his door.

"Brother Chong, are you awake?" Xu Jun’s voice came from outside.

Chen Chong got dressed and went out.

A wisp of smoke hung in the living room air. Wang Biao and Jia Wen were sitting on the balcony, watching the curing meat.

Xu Jun was squatting on the floor, excitedly pulling at a tangled, net-like object.

"What is that thing?"

Chen Chong was puzzled. ’Did he get a fish cage too?’

’No, that’s not the same as mine...’

"Brother Chong, look!"

Xu Jun picked up the untangled net, the smile on his face impossible to contain.

"Is that... a bird net?"

"That’s right, a bird-prevention net!" Xu Jun said excitedly. "We didn’t do anything yesterday, so I thought I wouldn’t get any good Cards. I didn’t expect to get a D-Class Rating and end up with this thing..."

"That’s great!" Chen Chong smiled.

Bird nets were tools used in orchards, herb farms, or fields to prevent birds from stealing the crops.

The fine mesh lines made it difficult for most fast-flying birds to see. Even if they did, they often didn’t have time to dodge and would fly right into it.

They would get tangled in the mesh, and the more they struggled, the tighter it would get, until they were completely trapped.

In places with a high concentration of birds, you could catch dozens or even hundreds in a single day. In less dense areas, you could still get ten or so.

It all depended on how many birds were in the area and how large the net was.

"What are the dimensions of the net?" Chen Chong asked.

"Six meters long, three meters high," Xu Jun gestured.

"That’ll do."

A bird-prevention net could ward off birds, but it could naturally also be used to catch them.

It was essentially the same as the fish cage. Once caught in it, there was no escape.

’Yesterday we were so busy processing the meat that we didn’t accomplish much else.’

’I didn’t expect that even though we both got low-level cards, they would be the exact hunting tools we need most right now.’

’It was a strange twist of fate that we ended up with such unexpectedly good items.’

’This must be luck...’

"Let’s go out today and find a place to set up this bird net. If we can catch some suitable birds, we might even be able to raise them in a cage."

"And I just got a fish cage Card, so we can set them both up at the same time."

Xu Jun was stunned. "What a coincidence! We both got these kinds of hunting Cards. It seems like even heaven is looking out for us. Birds and fish... I wonder if there are trap Cards for catching large prey."

Chen Chong was also very curious about this.

There were many Card Types, so many that no one knew for sure how many there were.

Even among the lowest D-Class Cards...

As for the even higher-level Cards, even less was known.

Chen Chong suddenly remembered that he hadn’t checked today’s intel yet, so he immediately pulled it up.

One look, and a stunned expression appeared on his face.

’These last few days, it’s not just the Cards that have been dropping good stuff. It seems like the daily intel is also full of unexpected information.’

’And today’s information... is even more shocking than anything from the past few days...’
