Chapter 23: Chapter 21: Preparing to Move, Luxury Apartment
"This thing... I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it on a lot of wilderness survival reality shows, right?"
"What a coincidence. I’ve seen it on nature documentaries..."
Chen Chong and Xu Jun exchanged a glance and spoke a single name in unison.
"Moose!"
But recognizing the stag’s species only made Chen Chong more confused.
’Isn’t this animal native to other countries?’
’They’re found in our country, but they’re rare. It’s only in recent years that large populations have been discovered.’
’They’re generally much more common in other countries.’
’Could it be that this Primitive Jungle is home to animals from all over the world, not just the common native ones?’
Then again, it made sense.
If man-eating, horned catfish existed, then a few animals from other countries didn’t seem so strange.
As the largest member of the deer family, the Moose has an incredibly imposing physique.
They typically range from two to three meters long, stand one and a half to two and a half meters tall, and can weigh anywhere from 880 to 1,650 pounds!
The largest Moose on record was rumored to have reached a terrifying 2,200 pounds!
That’s heavier than most small cars.
This Moose right here probably only weighed about 650 to 750 pounds...
...meaning it was likely not even fully grown.
"It’s not even fully grown?" Jia Wen asked, surprised by their conversation.
Even Wang Biao was astounded. "If we could hunt a 2,200-pound Moose, the four of us wouldn’t have to worry about food for months."
"Still, 650 to 750 pounds is enough to last us a good long while," Xu Jun said.
Chen Chong wasn’t so optimistic.
"After removing the antlers, hide, organs, bones, and other scraps, the pure meat you can eat is probably only a little over half the total weight. Even if this Moose weighs 770 pounds, we’d only be left with a little over 440 pounds of meat after dressing it."
’Over 440 pounds of meat sounded like a lot, but to preserve it, it had to be smoked into jerky. Otherwise, it would spoil quickly in this environment.’
’Once you smoke out the moisture, the weight shrinks dramatically.’
’Meat loses about 30% to 50% of its weight when smoked into jerky, so at best, we’d be left with 330 pounds, maybe even less.’
’That would still feed the four of them for a while, but...’
’My goal isn’t just to have enough food to get by. It’s to live *well* in this world!’
’Using the Building Card I have in the dorms is too risky. To develop long-term, finding a new place to live is essential.’
’Our group is also lacking too many essentials, which we’ll have to trade for.’
’All things considered, we’d probably have to trade most of this food away, keeping only a small portion for ourselves.’
’Fortunately, I know everyone on my team has their role. Plus, I get daily intel that randomly provides information on Cards, prey, and dangers.’
’Isn’t today’s Moose hunt a direct result of that intel?’
’Even if intel on food is rare, it’s bound to pop up every few days. Worst-case scenario, we still have Wang Biao, who knows how to hunt. We just need to find him a bow.’
’Compared to the other students, getting food doesn’t seem all that difficult for me.’
’So I can afford to be less stingy...’
There was no time to waste. Since he had made up his mind, he would handle the move today.
’Only by finding a suitable place to live could he use the various Building Cards in his possession without worry.’
"Wang Biao, do you know how to skin and butcher a deer?" Chen Chong asked.
Wang Biao glanced at the Moose. "Yes, Sir. I do."
Jia Wen chimed in, "Sir, I know a little about it, too."
"Good." Chen Chong nodded. "Yesterday, we discussed finding a new place to live, but we didn’t have anything to trade. Now we do. To save time, you and Jia Wen will stay here and butcher the deer. I’ll take Xu Jun and go check things out."
"Go on, Sir, don’t worry about a thing. Leave this to me and Jia Wen," Wang Biao said without the slightest hesitation.
"I’m leaving this dagger and axe with you. Remember, if you run into danger, fight if you can win, run if you can’t. Your lives are what’s most important." Chen Chong handed the weapons to them, warning them again.
Hearing Chen Chong’s words, Wang Biao was deeply moved. He knew full well how crucial food was in their current situation. Unwittingly, his Loyalty Value rose another two points, reaching 92.
Chen Chong was a little surprised. ’This can raise Loyalty, too?’
"I will remember your words, Sir!"
"Alright, Ah Jun, let’s go."
"Coming, Brother Chong..."
...
Although the wild kiwi tree was some distance from the school, the two of them were already familiar with the route after several trips back and forth.
Plus, Wang Biao had previously taught them how to avoid snakes, which greatly improved their efficiency as they moved through the jungle of overgrown weeds and bushes.
Before long, they were back at the school, heading for the faculty apartments in the central park area.
The faculty apartment building was rather impressive and quite large.
It was a standard apartment building, seven stories tall, with about twenty-odd rooms per floor.
Of course, it was the only building of its kind, surrounded by various small parks and landscaped scenery of flowers and trees.
Unless you intentionally went looking for it, you could easily miss the faculty apartment building.
The scenery and privacy, however, were excellent.
Just as they arrived, Chen Chong and Xu Jun saw a group of five students leaving, looking rather dejected.
"Hey, do you guys live here?"
"No," one of them answered. "We were hoping to trade for an apartment. The dorms are just too awful."
’Looks like quite a few people had the same idea I did,’ Chen Chong thought. ’It’s only the third day. I bet more and more people will come here trying to get an apartment as time goes on.’
"So why didn’t you make a trade?"
"Ugh, don’t even get me started," another girl said indignantly. "These teachers are completely price-gouging. They want fifty packs of instant noodles for the worst one-bedroom apartment. In this environment, who besides the student council could possibly come up with that much stuff at once? And even they wouldn’t be willing to part with it! A price like that is just blatant extortion!"
"Xiaoxue, that’s enough. Let’s go." Another girl, who seemed wary of speaking to strangers like Chen Chong, tugged the others away with a guarded expression.
After they had left, Xu Jun finally spoke up. "Fifty packs of instant noodles for a one-bedroom... before all this, that would’ve been dirt cheap. But now, it’s an astronomical price. If a one-bedroom costs that much, what about a three-bedroom? It’d be through the roof. Brother Chong, are we still going to trade?"
"We are. Of course, we are," Chen Chong said with a nod.
’The high price was understandable. After all, this was the only decent housing on campus. Everyone else was either stuck in the dorms or fighting over territory to convert classrooms, lounges, and offices.’
’With prices that high, the teachers were probably making a fortune.’
’Besides... high prices can be negotiated.’
Chen Chong led Xu Jun forward. At the base of the building sat a bald, middle-aged man in a security guard’s uniform.
Chen Chong recognized him.
He was one of the school’s gate guards, a familiar face from his frequent comings and goings.
’He’d heard that since the ’transmigration,’ the school’s security guards no longer needed to watch the main gate.’
’Instead, they had taken weapons like riot shields and tactical forks from the security office and moved into the faculty apartments.’
’They had formed an alliance with the dozen or so teachers who were left.’
’It seemed that was indeed the case...’
"You two here to trade for an apartment?" the guard asked, squinting at the approaching Chen Chong and Xu Jun, a look of indifference on his face.
After all, far too many students had come to him trying to trade for an apartment over the past few days.
In just three days, more than thirty groups had come, but with one or two exceptions, they were all dirt-poor.
They’d come dreaming of trading a few cups of noodles, some bags of spicy gluten snacks, or even wild fruit they’d picked outside for an apartment.
Even if the security-teacher alliance was short on food, they weren’t *that* desperate.
Clearly, he had already lumped Chen Chong and Xu Jun into the same category...
