Chapter 22: Chapter 20: Perilous Hunt, Fruitful Results

The buck hadn’t noticed the trap beneath its feet.

It saw the berries before it and instinctively walked forward.

As its front hooves made contact...

The ground suddenly collapsed. Before it could react, the buck let out a cry of alarm and plunged into the deep pit.

"Got it!"

At Chen Chong’s cry, the four men scrambled to their feet and rushed over.

Inside the deep pit, the buck was struggling frantically. However, the vines and loose dirt they had set up beforehand were doing their job.

Its limbs were tangled securely.

The vines began to snap under the buck’s immense strength, but it couldn’t break free immediately.

The soft dirt also prevented it from getting any leverage. Even with its powerful body and incredible jumping ability, it couldn’t escape the pit.

It even lost its balance and toppled onto its side...

"Sir, don’t get too close! Its antlers are razor-sharp. Jia Wen and I can handle this!"

Without hesitating, Wang Biao let out a battle cry and leaped into the air. He held a clothes-drying pole with a dagger lashed to the end, aiming for the buck’s heart.

SHLICK!!

The sound of tearing flesh rang out.

A splash of crimson bloomed on the buck’s chest.

But before the dagger could penetrate any deeper, the clothes-drying pole couldn’t handle Wang Biao’s immense strength and snapped in two.

The pole was iron, but it was just thin tubing. Plus, who knows how many years it had been sitting in the dorm; it was already rusty and brittle.

It was fine for everyday use, but when subjected to such a powerful blow, it proved too fragile...

The dagger was buried halfway into its flesh, but it hadn’t reached the heart.

Instead, the pain only provoked the buck, causing it to struggle even more violently.

"I’ll go!" Jia Wen prepared to make his move.

"Your blade can’t stab the heart! Go for its neck!" Wang Biao yelled.

"My thoughts exactly!" Jia Wen raised his large blade high and leaped directly into the pit, swinging at the buck’s neck.

The blow tore through hide and muscle, cleaving halfway through its neck.

Blood gushed down the blade, exposing the bone beneath.

But the buck’s Life Energy was still formidable. Even with such a wound, it wasn’t dead and continued to struggle frantically.

The blade was now wedged against the bone. Jia Wen, still clutching the handle, was thrashed back and forth inside the pit, in extreme danger of being gored by the sharp antlers.

Crucially, Jia Wen couldn’t escape even if he wanted to. When he jumped in, his legs had also become entangled in the vines. Being thrown about like a ragdoll, he had no spare energy to free himself.

With an injury this severe, the buck was sure to die.

But its tenacious Life Energy could easily keep it alive for another ten minutes.

If they left it alone, the trapped Jia Wen’s chances of survival were slim.

Wang Biao steeled himself and jumped in after him.

He gripped the dagger—which had broken off the pole and was still embedded in the buck’s chest—with both hands and shoved it deeper.

The buck let out another bloodcurdling cry, but its struggles didn’t cease.

"Fuck!"

Chen Chong’s face darkened at the sight. ’Is this buck really so hard to kill?’

’Jia Wen and Wang Biao are risking their lives. I can’t just stand here and watch.’

He snatched the Fire Axe from Xu Jun’s hands and jumped in as well.

Of course, Chen Chong knew what he was doing. The Fire Axe was powerful, but it would be difficult to kill a large animal like this buck with it.

The best approach was to strike its spine. Even if it wasn’t a fatal blow, it would completely paralyze the creature.

Besides, attacking from the rear would avoid the risk of being gored.

’You’ve all gone down, what am I supposed to do?’ Xu Jun was stunned. ’It feels so wrong just watching from up here by myself, doesn’t it?’

’The problem is, I don’t have a weapon. I can’t help even if I want to...’

’Screw it, I’ll risk my life too!’

Xu Jun picked up the broken piece of the clothes-drying pole, jumped in, and started stabbing furiously at the buck’s stomach and rear.

The pole may have been flimsy, but by aiming for vulnerable spots like the underbelly, it could still inflict decent damage.

And so, all four men were in the pit, hacking away at the buck for dear life.

Fueled by adrenaline, perhaps, they felt no fatigue, only the ceaseless motion of their attacks...

...

「A long time later.」

The buck now lay motionless in the pit.

Chen Chong, Xu Jun, Wang Biao, and Jia Wen were all sitting on the ground, gasping for breath, utterly exhausted.

"Is everyone okay?"

The three of them shook their heads.

"Holy crap, that deer... was it really that hard to kill? We almost died back there," Xu Jun said, still shaken from the ordeal.

"Yeah, we really were risking our lives," Chen Chong nodded.

Wang Biao looked apologetic. "Sir, it was my fault. I misjudged both the prey and our weapon. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have ended up in such a dangerous situation."

"It’s not your fault. The weapon just wasn’t up to the task."

Chen Chong was comforting Wang Biao, but it was also the truth. The weapon really was inadequate. If the pole hadn’t suddenly snapped, a direct stab to the heart would have killed the buck, no matter how tough it was.

Besides, the final, fatal blow that had killed the buck was Wang Biao’s thrust, driving the dagger deep enough to pierce its heart.

Jia Wen added, "I was also at fault. My strike didn’t take the beast’s head clean off. My blade just isn’t sharp enough. Otherwise, that swing would have at least split the bone, and it wouldn’t have gotten stuck. When I get back and sharpen it, it should be much more effective."

Jia Wen wasn’t just making excuses. This was the inherent disadvantage of a crude iron blade.

Compared to a properly forged blade, it lacked not only hardness but also sharpness.

Something that could normally be split with a single cut would likely take two with a crude iron blade.

This was the result from someone like Jia Wen who often used a blade. If it were someone like Xu Jun or Chen Chong who didn’t usually use blades, it would probably take three or four cuts to see much effect.

D-Class Cards might drop weapons, but they were clearly the worst of the lot...

"Actually, it wasn’t just the weapons. We misjudged the prey, too," Wang Biao said. "This deer’s hide is thicker, and its bones are harder. Most importantly, it’s bigger than a normal deer, so its heart is set deeper inside. Otherwise, my dagger would have pierced it without needing to be buried to the hilt."

"Wang Biao’s right," Jia Wen agreed. "I also think this deer is too strange. Its size is a bit frightening. What species is it, anyway? I’ve never seen anything like it!"

At his words, the four men began to carefully examine the buck in the pit.

It was different from any deer they could recall—elk, Sika Deer, black deer, or any other cervid.

This deer before them was strange in every aspect: its size, antlers, fur, and even the shape of its skull.

Its antlers were unusually broad and had two distinct parts. The back portion was a wide, fan-like palm, while the front sprouted several normal-looking tines.

Its coat was dark brown, the fur short and coarse.

Its skull looked less like a deer’s and more like a shortened horse’s head.

But the most crucial part was its size, which was frighteningly large.

A typical wild deer might be a little over a meter long and weigh two or three hundred pounds. But this one was a full two meters long and a meter and a half tall.

They estimated its weight... at least six or seven hundred pounds!

This one deer was two or three times the size of a common one!

Neither Wang Biao nor Jia Wen recognized it.

Chen Chong, however, felt a sense of familiarity after studying it.

Xu Jun felt it too, but he couldn’t quite place it...
