Chapter 21: Chapter 19: Hunting the Stag, Make or Break
This time, the intel indicated a deer would appear in the afternoon.
Chen Chong knew that hunting such a large animal was not a one-man job.
The four of them had to work together.
So he told the other three in advance.
Wang Biao and Jia Wen didn’t have much of a reaction, their thoughts focused solely on the hunt.
Xu Jun, however, was completely baffled.
"Wait, Brother Chong, how do you know a deer is coming this afternoon?"
Chen Chong couldn’t be bothered to explain. He’d already told him twice that he had intel, but Xu Jun hadn’t believed him. It would be pointless to say it again.
So he just made up an excuse.
"A god came to me in a dream last night and told me. Do you believe that?"
Xu Jun was stunned for a moment, then he actually nodded. "Yeah, I do."
Chen Chong was speechless.
’Is there something wrong with this guy?’
’He doesn’t believe me when I tell him I have intel, but he believes me when I say a god told me.’
’Forget it. Arguing with him is just going to lower my own IQ...’
Meanwhile, Xu Jun was still chattering away. "Brother Chong, what else did the god tell you? Did they say if we’ll ever be able to go home?"
"You really believe it?" Chen Chong looked at him as if he were an idiot.
"Yeah, I do." Xu Jun nodded. "We’ve been transported to another world, we get daily settlements, there are all sorts of magical Cards, and we saw that giant monster. With all this bizarre stuff happening, the existence of a god doesn’t seem that strange, does it?"
’That... actually makes some sense.’
Chen Chong decided to spin another tale. "I don’t know if we can ever go back, but he said there’s hope as long as we focus on surviving."
"Survive and there’s hope," Xu Jun murmured to himself, sounding quite moved. "Spoken like a true god. So profound."
Chen Chong couldn’t be bothered to deal with him; they were clearly not on the same wavelength.
He turned to discuss how to hunt the deer with Wang Biao and Jia Wen.
"Sir, we don’t have any bows, arrows, or effective heavy weapons. To hunt a deer, we’ll need to set a trap."
"That’s right. I agree," said Jia Wen. "We can dig a pit and put some wild fruit on top as bait. Once the deer falls in, we can all attack it and finish it off right there!"
Chen Chong completely agreed with them.
’To be honest, I don’t really have any hunting experience.’
Though Wang Biao wasn’t a professional Hunter, he had grown up in the mountains and often foraged for wild goods, so he had some knowledge in this area.
Jia Wen was similar. He might not have known as much as Wang Biao, but as a military strategist from ancient times, he knew plenty of hunting tactics.
’As they say, leave it to the professionals.’
Chen Chong decided that he and Xu Jun would just follow their lead.
After a moment of thought, Wang Biao said, "A pit might trap the deer temporarily, but these wild animals can jump incredibly well. If it gets startled, it might leap even higher than normal. We should put some vines and debris at the bottom to keep it from getting free too quickly."
"Wang Biao is absolutely right." Jia Wen nodded slowly. "I think the trickiest part isn’t trapping it, but killing it. None of our weapons can kill a deer in one blow, not even this large blade..."
The four of them had a fair number of weapons.
A Fire Axe, a dagger, a clothes-drying pole, and a large blade.
They were fine for fighting people or hunting small prey, but inflicting superficial wounds on a large animal like a deer would be of little use.
It might just startle the deer, causing it to lash out with unexpected strength and escape despite its injuries.
The deer wouldn’t survive, but the problem was that Chen Chong and his group wouldn’t be able to find its body.
If they had bows and arrows or long-hafted weapons like spears, killing it would be much easier.
Finally, after putting their heads together, they had a plan.
Wang Biao got the dagger from Chen Chong and lashed it tightly to the clothes-drying pole with tree bark, fashioning a makeshift spear.
"It seems sturdy enough, but I’m not sure if it will hold up when we actually use it to hunt the deer," Wang Biao said with some concern as he swung the new weapon.
"Man proposes, Heaven disposes," Jia Wen said slowly. "We can only do our best and leave the rest to fate."
"That’s true."
Everyone nodded.
’There was no way they were going to pass up this opportunity. Even if their weapons weren’t ideal, they had to try.’
Whether they succeeded or not was truly up to fate now.
For the next while, the four of them began setting up their trap around the wild kiwifruit tree.
First, they dug a trench in a circle around the tree.
The trench wasn’t deep—less than a meter.
Their goal wasn’t to kill the deer with a deep pit, but simply to restrict its movement long enough to create an opportunity for the kill.
Besides, they didn’t have enough time to dig it any deeper, regardless of whether it would be more effective.
Digging was exhausting since they didn’t have any shovels or hoes.
Luckily, the forest soil was soft, not hard-packed, and Wang Biao and Jia Wen had experience with this sort of work.
They had found some hardwood earlier and carved it into curved, fan-shaped digging tools. Though not as effective as real shovels, they slowly but surely managed to excavate the trench.
By the time they were done, all of them were exhausted.
They knew this depth wasn’t enough to completely immobilize a full-grown stag, so they gathered a large amount of vines, stones, and soft mud to dump inside.
Then, when the stag fell in, it would get stuck in the mud and rocks.
Most importantly, the vines would tightly entangle its limbs and body, preventing it from escaping quickly.
Next, they laid dead branches across the trench and concealed it with fallen leaves and wild grass.
They also picked a bunch of wild kiwis from the tree, along with various other unfamiliar wild fruits, and scattered them on the ground as bait...
By the time they finished, all four were utterly exhausted.
Even the physically formidable Wang Biao was drenched in sweat.
As for Xu Jun, he had nearly collapsed from exhaustion...
"Damn it, this is so much work for one deer," Xu Jun complained. "If we don’t catch it after all this, I might as well just die."
"Alright, alright. Get up and let’s go hide."
Chen Chong and the others found a spot near the kiwifruit tree and lay prone.
To avoid being spotted by the stag, they hid more than fifty meters away, camouflaging themselves thoroughly with wild grass.
The four of them lay perfectly still, terrified of startling the stag when it appeared.
Time passed, and soon the sun was blazing high overhead. They had no idea how long they’d been waiting...
Hiding beneath the dry grass, all four were sweating profusely, their bodies itching unbearably.
Xu Jun was the first to crack. He whispered, "Brother Chong, are you sure about that dream of yours? It’s been at least two hours. Forget a deer, I haven’t even seen a bird. Are you sure that god wasn’t just messing with you?"
"It’ll be here. Just be patient."
’The intel can’t be wrong,’ Chen Chong thought. ’The only reason we haven’t seen the deer is because it’s not time yet.’
"Brother Chong, it’s so hot and miserable. I don’t think I can last much longer." Xu Jun was truly at his limit. If he hadn’t seen the other three lying perfectly still, he probably would have stood up already, but for now, all he could do was endure.
As time ticked by, just as Xu Jun’s patience was reaching its absolute limit and even Chen Chong was starting to feel the strain...
The deer appeared!
"Sir, it’s here," came Wang Biao’s voice, as faint as a mosquito’s buzz.
The word instantly roused the other three, their eyes locking onto the scene ahead.
Sure enough, a stag with massive, forked antlers had appeared in the distance.
It moved slowly, nibbling on grass as it walked, drawing ever closer to the wild kiwifruit tree.
Finally, it reached the edge of the trap.
The four men held their breath, not daring to move a muscle for fear of startling it.
’Whether they could catch this deer or not all came down to this moment!’
The stag noticed the wild fruit on the ground. It wasn’t intelligent enough to suspect they had been placed there deliberately.
It scanned its surroundings, as if searching for hidden dangers.
It moved...
A single hoof... stepped onto it!
