Chapter 20: Chapter 18: Sima’s Plan, Wen Wields a Greatsword
The outskirts...
Following the directions from the D-Class intel, Chen Chong found his target.
Sure enough, just as he’d guessed, it was another Card.
It was only a D-Class Card, though.
Engraved on it was an iron greatsword. It looked a bit crude, but still usable.
It looked a lot like the common greatswords you see littered across battlefields in movies and TV shows.
[Card Type: Resource Card - Crude Iron Greatsword]
[Rating: D-Class]
[Description: A greatsword forged from crude iron. Though somewhat coarse, it is reasonably sharp.]
"Hey, Brother Chong, you found another Card?"
Xu Jun was amazed. Why wasn’t he ever this lucky?
Chen Chong smiled. "Didn’t I tell you? I have intel, so of course it’s easy to find them."
"For real?" Xu Jun was a little skeptical.
But he no longer thought Chen Chong was just joking around like before.
After all, Chen Chong’s luck these past two days had been too good—he’d already found three Cards.
"It’s true." Chen Chong had no intention of hiding it from his good brother, Xu Jun, though it was up to him whether to believe it.
"It’s just a shame this Card is for a crude iron greatsword. It’s not very useful, but at least it’s a weapon."
"A greatsword?" Xu Jun said. "I don’t really know how to use one, but it’s definitely more intimidating to hold than a regular club."
"Do you know how to use one?" Chen Chong looked at Wang Biao.
Wang Biao slowly shook his head. "I can wield it, but I’m much better with bows and spears. My swordsmanship is average at best."
At these words, Jia Wen, who was standing nearby, stepped forward.
"To be honest, although I prefer strategy, I am also skilled with the greatsword and possess excellent swordsmanship!"
Oh?
Chen Chong, Xu Jun, and Wang Biao all turned to look at him at the same time.
With a flash of white light,
a greatsword about the length of an arm appeared in his hand.
"Then show us what you’ve got."
Jia Wen took the greatsword. "My Lord, Sir, and Brother Wang Biao, I shall now make a fool of myself!"
With that, he flicked his wrist, and the greatsword whistled through the air in his grasp.
Even from several meters away, Chen Chong and Xu Jun could feel the phantom pressure of the blade coming straight for their faces.
The two of them watched, somewhat stunned.
It had to be said, compared to his usual appearance of waving a feather fan, Jia Wen with a sword in hand was like a completely different person.
His entire being was filled with a sharp, murderous aura.
Even Chen Chong, who knew nothing of swordsmanship, could tell this was genuine skill, honed over countless days of practice.
This wasn’t the empty theatrics of some amateur wildly swinging a blade around.
After completing the form, Jia Wen brought the blade to rest and exhaled sharply.
"Excellent swordsmanship!" Even Wang Biao couldn’t help but exclaim in admiration.
"Truly excellent!" Chen Chong and Xu Jun chimed in.
"It’s just a minor trick, a minor trick." Jia Wen was modest, turning to return the greatsword to Chen Chong.
Chen Chong shook his head slightly. "Since you know how to use it, you should keep it."
Jia Wen was a little surprised. "But Sir, this is yours..."
Chen Chong said, "I said it’s yours, so it’s yours. Among the four of us, you’re the only one who knows swordsmanship. It’ll be of most use in your hands."
’Jia Wen is a subordinate recruited by my good brother Xu Jun. We’re on the same team, so of course I’m not going to be stingy.’
’If his combat power increases, doesn’t that mean our team’s combat power gets stronger?’
’Besides, it’s just a D-Class Card. It’s not that valuable...’
"If Brother Chong tells you to keep it, then keep it," Xu Jun said. "He’s my good brother. From now on, you need to treat him the same way you treat me, understand?"
Xu Jun wasn’t one for pleasantries; he had already decided in his heart to follow Chen Chong for the long haul.
"I will remember my Lord’s words!" Jia Wen nodded, then bowed to Chen Chong. "I thank you, Sir!"
Chen Chong smiled and nodded without saying anything.
’Since weapons like greatswords and daggers have appeared in Cards, there should be bows and spears too, right?’
’If I can get them one day, Wang Biao will finally have a proper weapon.’
’As of now, he’s still holding an iron clothes-drying fork.’
’Even though it’s sort of like a spear, it can’t compare to the real thing. It’s preventing him from using his full combat potential...’
"Let’s go. To the other side."
Done with his thoughts, Chen Chong led the group towards the location indicated by his second piece of intel.
The main event today wasn’t a D-Class Card, but the first appearance of actual prey.
’If this goes well,’ he thought, ’our team won’t have to worry about food for a long time...’
...
「Meanwhile, at the Student Council...」
"President, avenge me! Avenge me!"
Du Ming was screaming for revenge as if he were on death’s door, making Sima’s head ache.
"Drag him out of here so I can have some quiet. Have San Bangzi treat him."
"But San Bangzi is a vet," a member said, confused.
"A vet is still a doctor. You see anyone else in this school who knows how to treat injuries?"
"Yes, President..."
A few members dragged the wailing Du Ming away.
Sima felt a headache coming on.
San Bangzi, at least, came from a family of veterinarians. He didn’t have a license himself, but he’d grown up around the trade. Plus, right before they were all transported here, he’d bought a batch of medicine in the city for his father and hadn’t had the chance to bring it back yet. All this made him the only person in the entire school with any expertise in this area.
’I paid a high price to recruit him for the Student Council, and now my underlings are looking down on him.’
’It’s just... I seem to recall San Bangzi mentioning once that he hadn’t learned many other skills, but he had spent his childhood following his dad around castrating pigs. He had a lot of practice with that.’
’Du Ming’s injury is... related. He should be able to handle it, right?’
’He won’t treat him like a pig and just castrate him, will he...’
And then there was... Chen Chong?
The corners of Sima’s mouth curved into a smirk.
He wasn’t the type to lose his head just because one of his underlings got beaten up.
’The kind of fool who rashly seeks revenge just because his subordinate was attacked always ends up as cannon fodder in TV shows, a mere stepping stone for the protagonist.’
’I’m no fool like that.’
’Besides, as the art of war says, confronting an enemy with weapons is the worst strategy. Turning an enemy into a friend to be used for one’s own purposes—that is the best strategy!’
’Sometimes, an enemy can become an ally!’
’A student with high-level recruited characters and considerable combat power of his own... If I could absorb him into our ranks, the Student Council’s strength would increase dramatically.’
’Then I could mediate between them. I’m sure I could get them to bury the hatchet. What a wonderful outcome that would be!’
But then, Sima had a thought. ’Chen Chong crushed Du Ming’s balls. He might not even be a man anymore—he’ll be a eunuch.’
’Can this hatchet really be buried?’
"Forget it. I’m done thinking about it."
A vicious look flashed across Sima’s face.
’This Chen Chong is strong. He’d be useful for boosting the Student Council’s power against the other major clubs.’
’Recruiting him would be for the best, but if he doesn’t agree...’
’...I don’t mind using this incident with Du Ming as a pretext to show up at his door, eliminate them, and establish the Student Council’s authority!’
’The specifics will depend on the choice he makes...’
...
「The scene shifts back to Chen Chong.」
The group of four had already reached the other side of the woods.
The intel indicated that a deer would appear near a wild kiwifruit tree.
Chen Chong remembered this kiwifruit tree clearly.
’After all, it’s an important resource point...’
