Chapter 24: Chapter 22: Price Finalized, Supplies of 100 Packs of Instant Noodles

"Yes, we’re also here to trade for an apartment," Chen Chong replied.

The security guard stretched, saying nonchalantly, "Fifty packs of instant noodles for a one-bedroom. The price is firm."

Xu Jun’s brows furrowed slightly. "In our current situation, isn’t fifty packs a bit steep?"

The guard didn’t even look at them, replying casually, "Food is scarce in this situation, true, but faculty apartments like these are even scarcer. Fifty packs of instant noodles is already a bargain. Take it or leave it."

For some particular reason, their security guard-teacher alliance wasn’t short on food for the time being, so they would never sell for a low price.

After all, this was their only source of income. They were counting on the faculty apartments to make a fortune.

Even if few people could afford it now, sooner or later, someone with the means would come along.

Xu Jun was about to say something more, but Chen Chong stopped him. "All the apartments have keys, right? The doors haven’t been forced open, have they?"

The guard sounded displeased. "What are you trying to say? Who are you looking down on? Of course they all have keys. It’s not like we stole these apartments to sell them."

Both in name and in practice, the faculty apartments belonged to the teachers, which was why they dared to trade the units for supplies with a clear conscience.

All the keys were kept by a single administrative teacher, and that very teacher happened to have been left behind during the transversal.

Hearing this, Chen Chong was relieved. The main things he valued in a faculty apartment were its comfort, privacy, and security.

Without keys, the security doors would be difficult to open. Even if they could be forced, the apartment’s privacy and security would be greatly diminished, and he would have to reconsider...

"Alright, show me around," Chen Chong nodded. "But I don’t want a one-bedroom. I want... a three-bedroom!"

The moment he said that, the guard froze. "You... have enough supplies to trade for that?"

Xu Jun sneered, "What are you trying to say? Who are you looking down on?"

Hearing Xu Jun give him a taste of his own medicine, the guard grew a little awkward, aware that his earlier attitude hadn’t been the best.

But that was because he’d thought they were just another pair of poor students. After all, so many had come these past few days, and it was getting annoying.

’Who knew a big fish would show up...’

He quickly switched to a fawning smile.

"Right, you two, follow me."

Seeing the guard’s completely different attitude, Xu Jun felt vindicated, but Chen Chong was unfazed.

In his eyes, people like that were nobodies not worth mentioning—the type who treat whoever has money as their master. It wasn’t worth getting angry over.

There were too many people like that in society, and probably just as many in the school.

Normally, when there’s no profit to be made, they give you the cold shoulder with a terrible attitude. But offer them enough benefits, and they’ll bend over backward, kissing your ass like there’s no tomorrow.

’If I got angry every time I met someone like this, I’d spend all day being mad. As long as they don’t cause me any major trouble, it’s best to just ignore them...’

Chen Chong and Xu Jun followed the security guard up to the seventh floor, the top floor.

Because there was no electricity after the transversal, the elevators were long out of order, leaving the stairs as the only option.

Fortunately, both Chen Chong and Xu Jun were strong and fit. Having lived on the sixth floor of the men’s dormitory, they were long used to climbing stairs. This was just one more floor, so they didn’t feel a thing climbing up. They even thought the view from the faculty apartments was quite nice.

"See, this is a three-bedroom." The guard fumbled through a large ring of keys for a while before finally opening a door.

The two walked in, their eyes instantly lighting up.

It had to be said, the faculty apartment was beautifully built. Although it was called an apartment, it wasn’t small at all, measuring around a hundred square meters.

Inside, there was a kitchen, a bathroom, a living room, a balcony—it had all the amenities one could ask for.

If you didn’t call it an apartment, you would probably mistake it for a regular condominium.

This environment, this level of comfort... it was worlds better than the men’s dorms.

"Not bad. Are the three-bedrooms only on the seventh floor? What about the other floors?" Chen Chong asked.

The guard answered, "That’s right. The faculty apartment building is seven stories. The first three floors are all one-bedrooms, with about sixty-some units. The middle three floors are two-bedrooms, adding up to around forty units. The seventh floor is all three-bedrooms, with only about ten units."

"Mm." Chen Chong was very satisfied. The fewer people on a floor, the better the privacy. If he lived on a one-bedroom floor with over twenty units, it wouldn’t be private enough.

This particular unit was also in the furthest corner of the seventh floor. People generally wouldn’t be loitering around his door.

"Name your price."

"The price..." The guard hesitated. After all, he’d never sold a three-bedroom before.

No one had thought someone would be able to afford one so soon. They had only set standard prices for the one- and two-bedroom units; they had no idea how to price a three-bedroom.

"We sell the one-bedrooms for fifty packs of instant noodles, and the two-bedrooms for seventy-five. This three-bedroom is the biggest and most luxurious, so it’s got to be... one hundred and fifty packs, right?"

"Is this a robbery?" Xu Jun shot back, displeased.

Chen Chong’s brows also furrowed. "That’s too expensive. If that’s your price, there’s nothing more to discuss."

This was a school, not home; people weren’t in the habit of stockpiling food. Most didn’t have many supplies and mainly gathered food from outside.

If they were at home, every family would have at least some food left in their refrigerators. But at school, having even a few packs of instant noodles was considered a rare luxury.

One hundred and fifty packs of instant noodles was an absolutely astronomical sum!

The guard put on a pitiful act. "You two, you know how rare the three-bedrooms are. Besides, I’m not keeping the one hundred and fifty packs myself. It has to be split between me, a few other guards, and about ten teachers. There’s not much left after that."

"How you split it is none of my business." Chen Chong shook his head. "If the value isn’t there, we’ll have to pass."

With that, he made to pull Xu Jun away and leave.

The guard panicked at the sight. This was a big fish.

Even though his group wasn’t in a rush to trade the apartments, they had only managed to offload two one-bedrooms in the past few days.

Their supplies were dwindling. If they could successfully trade a three-bedroom, they’d be set for a long time.

"Hey, wait, we can discuss it, let’s discuss it some more..."

...

Half an hour later, Chen Chong and Xu Jun had left the school and were hurrying in Wang Biao’s direction.

The apartment trade was a success.

Both sides settled on a price that satisfied them: one hundred packs of instant noodles.

The number sounded high, but it was really only about four boxes of bagged instant noodles.

For the guard and that group of teachers, it was something of a loss. They had hesitated on the price for a long time. After all, three-bedrooms were rare, and after splitting a hundred packs, each person would only get a little under ten.

But Chen Chong had told them frankly that he didn’t have that many instant noodles and offered to trade with meat instead.

The guard’s face had split into a huge grin. Meat was even rarer than instant noodles! He had agreed on the spot.

He told the guard to hold onto the keys, saying that he and his group would be right back with the meat, and then left the school...

Soon, the two, familiar with the route, returned to the vicinity of the wild kiwi tree.

Before they even got close, they could hear the sound of an axe chopping, coming from the pit...
