Chapter 1116: Chapter 1116 - Taming the Wall - Expected View
Ren slotted the final core into the empty circular depression on the colossal door.
The heavy, swirling sphere of Wind and Earth seated perfectly into the stone. It fit with the flawless, airtight precision of a mechanism designed for that exact, microscopic tolerance.
For one agonizing heartbeat, absolutely nothing happened.
Then, the ancient stone reacted. It was the exact same phenomenon Sirius had witnessed years ago, ten chambers above, when he had used the slightly dragonified shadow wolf guardian core to breach the ruin’s outer gates.
The door didn’t simply push the core inward, nor did mechanical gears grind to lock it into place. The solid stone drank it. The heavy sphere seemed to liquefy, dissolving directly into the monolithic slab. At the exact same moment, the other two embedded spheres, the pulsing Light and Darkness core, and the swirling Fire and Water core, suffered the exact same fate.
The three solid cores violently destabilized, converting instantly into pure, blinding energy.
The colossal door finally moved.
The monolithic slab that had securely sealed the tenth chamber for centuries didn’t just slide open; it retracted completely into the surrounding bedrock. As it ground backward, the massive influx of energy from the three cores surged into the surrounding stonework. It ignited the ancient runes carved into the archway, triggering a blinding chain reaction.
The light raced along the massive frame and violently propagated inward. Section by section, the intricate symbols etched across the walls of the final chamber flared to life. It was a breathtaking cascade of illumination, moving with the rhythmic, pulsing cadence of a massive, bioluminescent nervous system waking from a centuries-long slumber.
Everyone in the corridor held their breath.
Ren narrowed his eyes, his mind instantly analyzing the glowing runes as they flared. He was searching for the lethal, rotting signature of traps, or the aggressive spikes of a defensive mechanism.
He found nothing.
After spending agonizing hours deciphering and surviving Sethia’s corrupted mana in the previous ruins, Ren immediately recognized the fundamental difference here. This mana was pristine. There was no necrotic taint, no hidden malice. It was simply the mechanical response of a system that had been given the exact keys it demanded, and nothing more.
It was safe... It was time to step inside.
Ren took the first confident step over the threshold, and the rest of the vanguard flowed in behind him.
The tenth chamber was exactly what their doomed expedition in Yino had taught them to expect. And yet, simultaneously, it was entirely different.
Dominating the absolute center of the cavernous room stood a colossal crystal formation. It was the "brain", the exact term Julius and Zhao had coined when desperately trying to describe the anomaly they had found in Yino.
It was breathtaking. The massive, translucent structure towered toward the ceiling, defined by impossible edges. Deep within its crystalline depths, light refracted through a dizzying geometry that the human eye simply couldn’t easily follow. It felt less like a rock and more like a hyper-advanced brain forged from solid glass.
Scattered across the vast floor surrounding the brain were loose, raw mana crystals and dormant artifacts, resting quietly exactly as they did in every ancient ruin, waiting to be claimed.
But this time, the architecture was noticeably bare. There were no ornate pedestals. There were no priceless Double-Contract potions waiting to be snatched. There was only the towering crystal brain. And at its massive base, carved directly into the root of the structure, were seven empty sockets.
Seven hollow slots, patiently waiting for something that wasn’t there.
Ren swept his gaze over them as the vanguard immediately fanned out, their instincts taking over as they efficiently harvested the loose crystals, refusing to leave anything of value behind. But Ren didn’t care about the loot. The glowing brain wasn’t either what he had come to see today.
His eyes locked onto the far back of the chamber.
There, standing quietly behind the colossal brain, positioned directly beneath the crystals that Ren had absorbed into his Wolverine space looking for them, were the two statues.
One was pitch black. The other was blindingly white.
They were two breathtakingly beautiful women, eternally frozen in a tragic moment. Both figures were sculpted in desperate, fiercely protective stances.
Their crystal bodies were leaning sharply forward, arms covering to the front, perfectly capturing the exact posture of someone violently throwing themselves between a lethal threat and what stood behind them. The ancient crystal had flawlessly preserved the precise millisecond they had stopped moving. In both women, it was the undeniable, heartbreaking moment of someone sacrificing absolutely everything they had to shield another.
Ren stared at the white statue.
He didn’t need Sirius or anyone else to confirm her identity. He knew she had to be the white statue based on the pristine Light crystal Luna had guarded in her shadow for years. But even without that clue, the biological reality was obvious.
It was like looking at Luna through a pane of glass that aged the image by a decade. They possessed the exact same elegant cheekbones, the same proud slope of the jaw, the same structure in their faces. Looking at the frozen woman, Ren could practically see almost the exact person Luna would grow up to become. She was standing right in front of him, flawlessly sculpted in white crystal.
His eyes drifted down to the center of their chests. Both statues featured a perfectly smooth, gaping cavity where their hearts belonged.
Ren slowly turned his head, glancing back at the seven empty slots carved into the base of the crystal brain.
His mind calculated the variables, weighed the mysteries, and ruthlessly pushed them aside.
They didn’t matter... Not right now.
He would find a way to activate the formation without whatever belonged in those slots, or he would figure out how to fill them later.
Today, there was only one absolute priority. He was going to give Luna exactly what he had promised her.
Despite its massive size, the group quickly and efficiently settled into the perimeter of the room.
While the majority of the vanguard stared up at the impossible geometry of the brain, completely mesmerized by the scale and the heavy, sacred silence of the chamber, Luna stepped forward. Sirius walked silently right beside her.
Together, father and daughter approached the white statue.
