Chapter 107: He dug his chin into his scarf
"I think you need to work on your temper, Alyssa." Michael said. "I feel it’ll get you in trouble someday."
Alyssa clenched her fists. She thought about his words and felt she had been overly active. If Doctor Ro had taken her words to heart, then they wouldn’t have been able to avoid a head-on confrontation.
Rogues don’t know manners, some said. And they definitely don’t care what pack you belong to. If you offend them, they will return it with violence.
She had been rude, she realized that now.
"I apologize." She quickly apologized but Michael shook his head and said,
"I’m not the one you should be apologizing to so don’t apologize." He sighed. "But for a moment, I really thought he was going to attack us."
"It was my mistake. I’ll make sure to think before I act next time." She said, her fist in the air with a determined gaze.
’Next time?’ Michael thought.
Would there be a next time?
"That aside, that guy... I’m sure he’s a quack doctor." There she goes with her own judgment. "But I just don’t get it. How did he get to fool my boss?" She bit her thumb, agitated and Michael laughed.
"Don’t think too much of it." He said.
Even if he was a quack doctor, they still got what they were after, so it was alright.
No normal doctor would agree to run a pregnancy test for a man so they should be glad that they got to find a rogue who didn’t ask for their affiliations for personal reasons and just got the job done.
He looked down at the copies of the scan in his hand.
’I’m pregnant.’ he thought, his heart suddenly feeling giddy.
Never in his wildest dreams...
He shut his eyes for a moment. Sweet memories flowed through his mind. Memories with Noah.
When it was just them.
He opened his eyes.
He guessed this was the result of that sweetness he felt every time.
But it wasn’t just sweet. It was bittersweet.
Maybe it was because he knew he’d be the only one to watch as the love they shared grew in his belly.
It was scary.
He wished they could’ve lived like that for a little longer. Lived like a normal couple without the world being at their back, trying to tear them apart.
He would come back from work, meet Noah, who returned earlier, at home with an apron on and a sweet smile on his lips, welcoming him back, and then they’d take a walk outside, holding hands.
He dug his chin into his scarf, covering half of his face, including his mouth, as he thought softly on that cold day.
During rainy days, they would play out in the rain even though it was quite cold. Afterward, they’d cuddle under the blanket, drinking hot tea and smiling at each other.
Such warm days, he longed for them so much.
But it was such a pity.
Alyssa had been talking for a while, but there was no response from Michael, so she turned to find him gazing softly at the distance with the lower part of his hidden in his scarf.
’Whoa,’ she exclaimed in her mind. ’He looks...’
"Let’s go for a little walk, shall we?" Michael said, turning to her and she nodded, gulping.
"Y-yes."
Alyssa didn’t know what she just saw but a thought crossed her mind. Maybe the reason why their Alpha was so smitten by his female was because of his appearance.
As soon as she thought that, she shook her head.
’No, there’s no way Alpha Noah is superficial like that.’ She thought, slapping her cheeks. ’I need to get it together. He definitely isn’t the type that looks at a person’s appearance alone.’
"What are you doing?" Michael called, a couple of steps ahead of her. "Hurry up, Alyssa."
"Ah, yes."
She picked up the pace.
They were walking because the car did not wait for them. Alyssa didn’t know why.
She thought it was a car that had been prepared for them by her boss so why did it not wait till they were done?
Or was she tasked to bring him back by herself after they were done?
But wasn’t that dangerous?
’Boss put this mission on me, so I’ll make sure to do my best.’ she grew more vigilant, scanning the area around them with her keen sight, and looking ahead of them first.
"Aren’t you being too cautious?" Michael asked and laughed.
"There’s no such thing as being too cautious when it comes to your safety." She said, her eyes sharpened like a hawk but it only caused him to laugh more.
"Alright then. I guess I’ll have to rely on your caution ’cause I’m not on guard in the slightest." He said and kept walking.
"Yes, you can definitely count on me."
They walked for a while. But then Alyssa started feeling some certain strange gaze.
"Mister Michael," she called over a whisper and he turned to her.
"I think we’re being followed." She said and he paused.
"Is it the doctor?" he asked.
"No, it’s not. It’s not rogues either." She said. "It’s someone skilled and..." Her nose sniffed, wiggled in the air a bit, and she frowned. "A very powerful presence. I think it’s a lycan."
"What? You mean you guys mortal enemies?" He asked and she nodded. "Are you sure? They don’t have any reason to follow us though."
They kept walking normally so as not to alert their enemy that they’d caught on to them.
"Should I go sniff them out before they cause trouble?" Alyssa asked.
"No. What if they laid an ambush in front of us?" Michael asked. "We don’t know what they want so let’s not be hasty, okay?"
But Alyssa was itching to confront them. How dare they lay their eyes on them?
It was obvious they were coming after them because they were werewolves. But was that the only reason?
Perhaps... She glanced at Michael... Could it be that they were aware of Michael’s identity?
Or had they just sniffed out a female?
"This is dangerous," she muttered. "We have to do something. We can’t let them follow us till the end?"
"Then, shall we engage in a little exercise?" He asked, grinning and she wondered what he was on about. "I want to see if I can outrun a werewolf."
"What? There’s no way you can."
"Awn, come on. My bones aren’t that weak. And mind you, I used to run in my school track races." Michael boasted.
"You’re an athlete?" She asked, surprised but he darted his eyes away and cleared his throat.
"Ahem, it was when I was in high school," he said, dashing her hopes.
It was hopeless to think he would be able to run that well.
Lycans were very quick on their feet and he was just a human, probably not a talented one at running. And not just that... She glanced at his belly... He was pregnant.
They couldn’t do anything risky.
"Hey, don’t look at me like a weakling just because of this." He said, sweat dripping down the corner of his face. "I’ll do my best and follow your words, so let’s make a run for it while we still have a safe distance between us."
Once they started running, they would alert the enemy and they’d chase after them.
So, they needed to make their way to a crowded area first.
It was already getting dark, and the lights in the streets were already on, but that wasn’t enough to light up their path.
If it got any darker, then it would be too disadvantageous for them.
’Just why did the driver drive away?’ Alyssa thought, biting her lips. It only made it harder for them.
"Then, shall we get sprinting?" He asked, stretching her arms and she nodded.
"Please, follow my lead." She said to him. "I’ll make sure to get you out of here safely."
"Aye."
They got ready to run. It was going to be their only shot so they needed to head towards an open space where people could see them as fast as they could before the Lycans caught up to them.
"On my mark," Alyssa whispered. "Set and g--"
"Don’t you think that’s a bit dangerous?" A voice interrupted them and they turned their heads to find the Doctor.
"Doctor Ro?" They both exclaimed in surprise.
"You gave me quite the trouble but I couldn’t just let you leave." He said, and Alyssa got in front of Michael, spreading her name as she remained vigilant.
"Why did you follow us?" She asked, her eyes furrowed. "And what do you mean by you couldn’t let us leave?"
"Hm," Doctor Ro stared at her for a little while and then looked towards Michael. "It’s because you’re one bill short." He said, taking out the wad of cash from the inner pocket of his coat. "You’re one bill short and I can’t accept that. My service needs to be paid in full." He demanded, but this girl, Alyssa confused.
"You followed us all this way because of a single bill?" She asked. "And you expect us to believe you?"
