"I-Impossible." Samantha nearly choked herself. She stumbled backward and fell on the ground.

How was this possible?

His clothes actually had a defensive mechanism.

Then why didn’t it activate when she bumped into him?

Or even protected him from the ruler.

By logic, it should have automatically activated and ensured the wearer’s absolute protection unless the opponent was too high-level.

It can’t be faulty either because her attack would have worked and not been deflected.

"Did you trick me on purpose?" She asked in frustration.

"Trick you?" Ray appeared innocent. "I didn’t trick you at all. I swear upon William’s name that if I trick you, I’ll get no woman ever."

"Your name’s William?"

"Nope, but I’m sure he would be grateful to me."

Once she was rendered speechless, Ray cleared his throat. "Anyway, you owe me 20 gold coins now. How will you pay?"

"You..." Samantha’s eyes turned lifeless.

"Can I pay in installments?" She put on a coy expression and asked.

"Oh my god, so cute!" Ray clapped his hands and jumped in joy.

She thought she had succeeded until Ray suddenly changed his face.

"Did you think that was what I would do? You either pay me back now or work like a slave for me during the academy." He smirked coldly.

"I refused!" She obviously wouldn’t let him take advantage of her.

"Sure, then, according to the contract, you will be stripped of mana. Without mana, let’s see how you can survive in the academy. Not to mention, your tuition would probably be forfeited too." Ray then blabbered on and on about how her life would turn to complete shit.

He made sure to speak about the worst possible life for her.

’What a villain.’ Belva twitched her lips. The reason his defensive mechanism failed to activate the first time was that he napped and turned it off accidentally.

Only then did he remember about it and turned it back on.

Who could have imagined that a slight mishap would enable him to swindle a poor commoner?

Of course, Belva wasn’t worried about Samantha.

As hateful as he was, he definitely wasn’t after her body.

After all, Belva believed herself to be superior to Samantha in terms of appearance and figure.

"Oh, you’re not willing?" Ray raised an eyebrow. "Let me just tell that to the academy that waived your tuition fees to pay me instead."

"Wait!" Samantha quickly extended her hand. But then something struck her.

"How did you know the academy waived my fees? Did you investigate me?" Her eyes filled with hostility.

"Are you serious?" Ray was unbothered by her hostility and glanced at her up and down. "With your poor clothes and unwillingness to compensate. It’s so obvious that you’re a poor country bumpkin. And those old textbooks, if you tell me you’re actually rich, I’ll bang William’s head into the wall."

"Just who is this William!" She screeched and felt humiliated at Ray’s commentary on her upbringing.

"Don’t worry about it." Ray yawned.

’Now this is how you get a good cultivation land. I just need to bully this heroine for free points.’ He felt pretty good himself. This was many times better than provoking the protagonist and risking his life.

That bastard’s plot armor was so thick that it could clog up the toilet. Not even those specialists in fixing them could do it.

That was how perverse his plot armor was.

And anyone else close to him or any cities he goes to will turn to crap.

’Wait a second, will the empire turn to crap in the first Chapter?’ Ray suddenly had a bad premonition.

’System, tell me, are we really at the first Chapter, Crestellan Empire, and not something else?’ He decided to confirm his suspicions.

His sixth instinct was practically screaming at him that things definitely weren’t so simple.

The fact that he had to go through a prologue that was never shown in the novel proved that something else was going on.

If he still followed a dumb belief that the novel had a fixed storyline, then he might as well quit his rogue reader identity and become an author’s slave.

After all, just because an event might be fixed, the process of going there might not be fixed.

This was similar to a Restoration of Fate, where the world itself wanted to return things to normal. And in this novel world, his role as a villain extra never existed.

In other words, whatever he does could become reversed or extremely difficult to accomplish.

’I wanted to avoid gaining Sylvie’s hatred, but it still happened when the event had Jake killing her sister. Ugh, what a shitty mess Jake had to do. I should have hawk tuah him more.’ He pinched between his brows and glanced at Samantha.

"Where are you headed to?" He asked in an informal tone.

"T-To the academy," Samantha answered reluctantly.

"Your name?" He then asked, even though he already knew. This was to avoid being suspected of knowing her in advance.

How smart was he?

Shouldn’t he deserve a cookie?

’Right, system?’ Alas, the system ignored him and paid no heed to his request.

"I’m Samantha." She replied.

"Ah, too long. I’ll call you Sam from now on. As for me, just call me Ray." He yawned and gestured to her to lead the way.
