Chapter 696: Dad Will Protect You All
Michael turned around after hearing Wendy scream, and saw her sitting on the floor.
He was scared out of his mind, and rushed to Wendy’s side.
He looked at her earnestly and asked, "Did you injure yourself? Let’s go back to the doctor!"
Michael picked Wendy up and started rushing to the doctor’s room.
Seeing how nervous and worried Michael was, Wendy knew that she crossed the line, so she whispered, "I, I didn’t injure myself actually..."
Michael stopped running after hearing that.
He frowned and immediately realized what happened.
He then gently put down Wendy as his face turned white. He said with a serious tone, "Wendy Stewart, how dare you use yourself and the baby to trick me like that?"
Wendy then pinched the corner of Michael’s shirt after seeing Michael become angry than before and said, "Sorry, I didn’t mean to do that."
"I know that you’re worried about Jake, but the doctor also said that Jake took the correct cure and it’d only be a matter of time until he woke up. You’re a pregnant woman now, so you should put your own health first." Michael said. "Wendy, I bet Jake doesn’t want to see you like this after he wakes up."
In the end, Michael found it very hard to actually be angry at Wendy.
When he saw Wendy blinking her eyes and apologizing to him, his heart hurt maybe just as much as hers did.
He held Wendy’s hands tightly in his, sighed, and said, "Could you promise me that you’ll take care of yourself first, Wendy?"
Wendy nodded.
After getting back to the hospital room, Wendy rushed to Jake’s side and stayed there as usual.
Michael didn’t know how he could persuade her otherwise and sighed.
Wendy started cleaning Jake up using a warm towel and said, "Please wake up soon, Jake. Mom, Dad, Leah and your grandmothers are all waiting for you to wake up.
You’ve been lying there for days, and it’s time for you to wake up. By the way, I just went to my pregnancy check-up today. Please wake up and I’ll show you the picture of the ultrasound."
She then continued, "Your dad and I still don’t know whether I’m carrying a boy or a girl, but your little sibling looks exactly the same on the ultrasonic as you did when I was carrying you."
Michael walked to the bed, sighed and said, "Jake, your mom hasn’t eaten and slept well because she had to take care of you. The doctor said that your mom and your sibling might fall ill if she keeps being so stressed out. You should really wake up now, Jake, even just for your mother. She has been worried sick about you for too long."
"Why did you tell him that, Michael?" Wendy turned around and glared at Michael.
Michael sighed and said, "It’s not like he could hear us, otherwise he would have woken up already."
"I don’t care if he could hear us or not. You shouldn’t have said something like that right in front of Jake." Wendy said.
As for Jake, his consciousness was gradually coming back, and he heard some of the words of the conversation that Wendy and Michael were having.
He tried to hear what they were talking about, unfortunately, no matter how hard he tried, their voices were still blurry to him.
Suddenly, he heard someone saying that his mom had been worried sick about him and that she might fall seriously ill.
"Mommy might fall ill?" That thought was stuck in his wavering consciousness.
"No, mommy can’t fall ill."
"No way I can let mommy fall ill."
Jake’s consciousness started telling him that he must wake up now as he had promised that he would take care of his mother.
He felt as if his eyelids were being pressed by rocks, yet he still tried to open his eyes.
...
"Mommy..."
As Wendy was blaming Michael for his recklessness, Jake started to call her with his feeble voice. His voice was so low that neither of them heard it at first.
Suddenly, Leah started screaming with excitement, "Jake, Jake, did you just wake up? Mom, Jake woke up!"
It wasn’t until she heard Leah’s voice did Wendy look at Jake, and she saw Jake trying to open his eyes.
Wendy held his hands tightly as she couldn’t be more ecstatic, "You finally woke up, Jake. How are you feeling?"
And then, Wendy turned around and shouted, "Doctor! Where is the doctor?"
"I’ll go get him," Mary said also overjoyed, so much so that tears started falling down her cheeks.
"Jake" Wendy said as her voice trembled, and she couldn’t help holding Jake’s hands tighter and tighter.
Suddenly, she let go of his hands as she didn’t want to hurt him.
Seeing Wendy in a complete loss out of glee, Michael also got excited and nervous.
Soon, the doctor came in. Wendy stood up and gave the doctor the space to do check on Jake.
The doctor conducted a basic body check on Jake, then he smiled and said to Wendy, "Everything looks fine at the moment, so I reckon there wouldn’t be anything serious anymore. I’ll arrange a detailed check for Jake later on as we need to know how he’s recovering."
"Thank you, doctor. Thank you so much." Wendy said as she couldn’t stop weeping after hearing the doctor say nothing serious would happen.
The doctor waved his hands and walked out of the room without commenting.
After all, it was time for Jake and his family to enjoy this amazing moment.
"Don’t cry... Mommy... Don’t cry..." Jake lifted his hand as he wanted to wipe away his mother’s tears, yet he couldn’t reach Wendy’s face as his arm was too short.
Wendy lowered her head and put Jake’s hand on her cheeks.
"Don’t cry, don’t cry..." Jake couldn’t stop repeating these two words.
Wendy nodded as she kept crying, "Of course. See, mommy isn’t crying anymore."
However, she couldn’t control her tears at all.
"Jake..." Mrs. Lucas and Mary were also gazing at Jake, wiping away their tears.
After all these days, they finally felt relieved since Jake had woken up.
"Finally, Jake. If you didn’t wake up, your mother wouldn’t be able to hold on for much longer..."
Before Michael finished talking, Wendy turned around and gazed at him again, "Stop talking."
Michael cleared his throat and whispered, "I was just really happy."
"That’s not an excuse for spewing nonsense," Wendy said to Michael.
Jake was always a mature and clever kid, and he would feel sorry and blame himself after hearing what Michael said.
"What happened to you, mommy?" Jake asked.
"Don’t listen to your father. Your mommy is beyond well." Wendy turned back and looked at Jake as if he was just born.
"Mommy..." Jake coughed as he still felt weak right after waking up.
Wendy then patted him on the back gently to help him breathe.
As Jake stopped coughing with Wendy’s help, Michael came back with a cup of warm water.
Wendy took the cup and carefully helped Jake sit up and drink a sip of the water.
Jake instantly felt better as he was hydrated.
He then looked at Wendy earnestly with his blinking eyes, and said worriedly, "Have you forgotten to eat and sleep because you had to take care of me, mommy?"
"Of course I didn’t. I ate every meal on time and I never went to sleep late," Wendy said. "Don’t worry about me, Jake. Your health is our top priority at the moment, understood?"
...
"I’ve heard everything," Jake coughed and spoke.
"What did you hear?" Wendy said as she blinked since she was sort of worried.
"I heard dad say that you have been worrying about me these past days and that you might fall ill soon if I didn’t wake up in time." Jake said. "I didn’t want mom to fall ill, so I was trying my best to wake up."
"It’s all your fault. You shouldn’t have said that in front of Jake." Wendy said while rolling her eyes at Michael.
Michael smiled and said, "Didn’t you hear that, Wendy? Jake only woke up because he didn’t want you to fall ill. If I knew that it would have worked like a charm, I would’ve told him earlier. You have been worried sick about him for days."
Wendy hadn’t thought about that yet, and after hearing what Michael said, her eyes got teary again.
Her son had always been so mature for his age and had been caring for her even while unconscious.
She held Jake’s hands tightly in hers as tears continued to poured down her cheeks.
She said, "I’m okay. I really am okay."
Wendy suddenly recalled something. She turned her head around and said to Michael, "Oh, by the way, where’s the ultrasound scan?"
Michael took the scan out of Wendy’s bag and gave it to her.
Wendy showed the scan to Jake and said with a shaking voice, "Then did you hear about the ultrasound scan I talked about? I said I’d show you the scan of your sibling after you wake up."
Jake shook his head.
However, he looked very closely at the scan that Wendy handed to him.
Wendy pointed at the scan and said gently, "See, those are the hands of your sibling, and those are their feet. Your sibling is five months old already, so we can totally see their hands and feet now."
Wendy still didn’t know whether she was carrying a boy or a girl, so she called her baby ’sibling’ when she brought them up with Jake.
Jake looked at the scan as his eyes glowed.
"They look just like you when I was carrying you," Wendy said happily. "Jake, do you wish for it to be a boy or a girl?"
"Both!" Jake smiled and said. "If it were a sister, then I would protect you and my two sisters. If it were a boy, we would protect you and Leah together."
Michael then immediately followed, "Jake, from now on, you protect your mommy and your siblings, and I will protect you all."
However, neither Jake nor Wendy responded to what Michael said.
Michael felt a bit embarrassed after being overlooked and scratched his nose.
The entire patient room was filled with joy over Jake’s awakening.
The doctor walked into Jake’s room after waiting outside for long enough, and said, "Mr. and Mrs. Lucas, would you mind if I take Jake to do a full body check? So that we know exactly how he’s recovering and you both can rest assured as well."
"Of course," Wendy agreed.
Jake was transferred to the cart once again, but unlike last time, Michael and Wendy happily followed him into the examination room.
They all waited outside the examination room while Jake was being examined.
Michael held Wendy’s hand with his left hand while holding Leah’s hand with his right one.
Jake was pushed out of the examination room after the body check.
Before they asked the question, the doctor said, "Jake is recovering very well, but he’s still pretty weak because he has been in a coma for days, so we need him to stay in the hospital for a while until we can let him go."
Michael, Wendy and the others all sighed with relief after hearing what the doctor said.
They couldn’t stop saying thank you.
Wendy embraced Michael tightly, showing how excited and elated she was.
