Chapter 697: That’s My Leftover

Wendy couldn’t stop smiling after they got back to Jake’s room.

Finally, after all these days, she could have a rest without worrying sick.

"Now you can eat and sleep properly." Michael said as he wrapped his arm around Wendy’s shoulders. "Hopefully, I don’t have to listen to the doctor say you’re suffering from malnutrition and lack of sleep next time."

"Sorry, mommy." Jake said as he lowered his head after hearing what Michael said.

Wendy glared at Michael while slapping his hand away. She walked towards Jake and patted him on his head and said, "Don’t worry, Jake. I’m all good."

However, Jake still looked sort of gloomy, so Wendy followed up, "Do you want to come with me to my next pregnancy check-up? That way you can see your sibling moving on the ultrasound machine."

"Great!" Jake looked up at Wendy and smiled at her.

"I want to come as well!" Leah ran towards Wendy cheerfully.

"Of course. Leah is coming with us." Wendy said while stroking Leah on her head.

"Then I’m coming as well." Michael said.

However, Wendy refused without hesitation, "Anyone can come but you."

"Why not?" Michael pouted and looked at Wendy like a child who just made a mistake. "Why can’t I come with you? Both Jake and Leah are going with you anyway."

"Well for starters, you’ve been making Jake worried for the whole day," Wendy said as she was still blaming Michael.

Michael stroked his nose as he couldn’t feel more embarrassed.

"Mrs. Lucas, your meal is here." one of the staff knocked on the door and came into Jake’s room with Tupperware.

Michael opened the Tupperware and gave them to Wendy first, "Time for your dinner. Jake, watch your mother so that she will eat as much as possible."

"No need to watch me. I promise that I’ll finish all the food." Wendy said confidently.

Jake had already woken up, so Wendy could finally eat at peace. She felt like her appetite just became much better.

Unfortunately, she failed to keep her promise as she was struggling to finish the food.

"I’m really full now. Can I stop eating?" Wendy glimpsed at her Tupperware as the food inside was almost all gone and then gazed at Michael.

Michael smiled and took the Tupperware in her hand. He then picked up the fork and started eating the rest of the food.

"Hey..."

However, Michael interjected before Wendy finished her sentence, "I don’t want to waste any food."

Wendy murmured, "That’s my leftover. I’ve eaten most of it already..."

"So what if it’s leftover?" Michael winked at Wendy and said, sounding proud. "I’ve eaten you before."

"What the... Our kids are still here..." Wendy shot Michael a glare again and said as she blushed.

"Really? You’ve eaten mommy before, daddy?" Leah blinked her eyes and stared at Michael innocently. "Is mommy delicious?"

Leah’s words could sound so dirty yet she only said them because she didn’t understand what Michael meant at all.

Jake fake-coughed twice, and after seeing the still curious Leah looking like she wanted to keep asking, he said, "Hey Leah, I want to eat some orange. Would you mind getting me one?"

"Of course! I’ll get it for you now."

Jake successfully changed the subject and tricked Leah into leaving the room and getting an orange for him.

In the meantime, Michael had finished the food left in the bowls.

Their staff started packing the Tupperware bowls up after everyone finished eating.

Wendy stood up, looked at Mrs. Lucas, and said, "Grandma, Jake has already woken up and the doctor said he’s all good now. I think you need to go home and take a rest. You’ve been in the hospital with us for days now and I reckon you’re tired as well."

Mrs. Lucas waved her hands and said, "Jake is my great grandson. Nothing tiring about taking care of him."

...

"Please go home with Ms. Wayne first. You can come back tomorrow when you’re free." Wendy tried to convince Mrs. Lucas to go back.

"That’s right, grandma. It’s getting pretty dark, and it’s better for you to go home and have a good rest," Michael said.

Mrs. Lucas was very old, and her body might crumble at any time after staying in the hospital for so many days.

They tried to persuade Mrs. Lucas to go home for a rest several times, yet Mrs.

Lucas insisted on staying as Jake’s life was on the line.

Now that Jake had woken up and was recovering well, there was no reason for Mrs.

Lucas to keep staying here anymore.

Fortunately, Mrs. Lucas wasn’t as perseverant as before now that Jake had woken up. She said, "I am indeed too old, and you don’t even want me here anymore. Okay, I’ll go home and leave you all alone."

"Where did that come from, grandma," Wendy said as she walked towards Mrs.

Lucas. She could tell that Mrs. Lucas was joking.

"Mom, I think you should go home and have a rest as well." Wendy turned around and said to Mary.

The past couple of days had exhausted everyone.

"Wendy, I reckon you should go home with Ms. Stewart." Michael said. "Take Leah with you as well. I’ll stay here to take care of Jake."

Wendy shook her head and looked at Zess who was sleeping beside Jake.

She sighed and said, "Zess has been taking care of me like a daughter these days, but she still hasn’t woken up yet, so I want to stay by and take care of her."

Michael then also glimpsed at Zess who was still lying on the hospital bed unconscious.

He knew that Wendy and Zess were very close, so he felt that he wasn’t in the place to ask Wendy to do otherwise. He nodded vaguely.

"Then I’ll take Leah back." Mary said.

Mary didn’t care much about herself, but she knew that it wasn’t good for Leah to stay in the hospital for long either, so she wanted to head back with Leah so that she could have a rest.

Wendy then walked to the hospital exit with Mrs. Lucas, Mary and Leah. She didn’t go back to the hospital room until they got into their car.

After getting back to the hospital room, Wendy walked towards Zess who was lying on the bed with a pale face. She sighed and said, "Hope Zess can wake up soon."

Michael walked to Wendy’s side and patted her on her shoulders and started consoling her, "Don’t worry. Zess was always in better condition than Jake was, and now that Jake has woken up, she will to soon."

"Of course." Wendy said and nodded.

She then held Zess’s hands in hers and said, "Zess, did you know that Jake has already woken up. Could you wake up soon as well?"

On the next day, Wendy sat beside Zess’s bed right after waking up and started talking to her, "Zess, did you see how sunny is it outside? It’s such great weather!

After you wake up, we will go to a theme park with Jake and Leah and have fun there..."

As Wendy was talking to Zess, she saw her finger flicker.

She blinked her eyes as she was worried that she just hallucinated it. She asked, "Zess, did you hear what I said? Could you move your finger again?"

It seemed that Zess had heard her words and moved her finger again.

Wendy shouted at Michael excitedly, "Michael! Zess seems to be waking up!"

Michael immediately ran to Wendy.

"I swear that I just saw Zess move her fingers." Wendy said. "Quick. Go get the doctor now."

Michael nodded and paged the doctor, who quickly came into the room and did a check on Zess.

Right after the body check, Zess opened her eyes.

"Zess..." Wendy shouted her name ecstatically. "You finally woke up, Zess!"

"Wendy..." Zess responded to Wendy with a feeble voice.

Wendy wiped away the tears on her cheeks.

"How is Jake?" Zess was worried about Jake more than she was anybody else.

"Jake is fine. He woke up yesterday." Wendy said while sniffing.

Zess smiled vaguely and said, "That’s great. That’s great."

...

Now that Zess had woken up, Wendy could finally rest with relief.

Seeing how quickly Zess and Jake were recovering, Wendy thanked God again and again for his blessing.

On the second day, the people from the research team came to the hospital to visit Jake and Zess.

"How are they doing?" The head of the researchers asked them as he saw that Jake’s face was getting ruddy again.

"Their vital signs are all stable now. The doctor said that they would be discharged after staying here for a couple of more days." Wendy answered gleefully.

"That’s great." the researcher said. "Actually, we came here today because we want to say goodbye to you and Mr. Lucas. Most of us came from other countries, and we only gathered in Lake City because of what happened to Jake and Zess. Now that they have both woken up and are almost recovered, it’s time for us to go back."

"Sure. I’ll have a helicopter ready for you guys." Michael said while waving at Mr.

York standing aside.

Mr. York walked to Michael, then Michael whispered, "Are they ready?"

Mr. York nodded.

Then Mr. York took out a stack of checks from his bag.

The researchers were dumbfounded as Mr. York gave each of them a check.

Michael then started explaining, "It was your efforts and talents that saved Jake’s and Zess’s lives, and we’ve seen how much work you’ve put into making the cures.

Both Wendy and I are businesspeople and we don’t know how to express our gratitude properly. Please take these checks, and if you guys need any help from me in the future, don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and call me."

The researchers were bewildered by all those zeros on the checks. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎

"Mr. Lucas, Dr. Lawrence has already given us some extra bonuses. So..." said one of the researchers.

Michael interjected before the researcher could finish his sentence, "Milo doesn’t have enough money to pay you the price that you deserve. These checks really are just an expression of our gratitude and appreciation for your work. Perhaps you think you only saved two random people, but to us, you saved our entire family. I don’t know how else to thank you guys if you don’t take the checks."

Wendy said, "That’s right. Please take the money, or we’ll feel like we owe you guys forever."

Mr. York also smiled and said, "Please take the money. It’s nothing to Mr. Lucas anyway."

Michael was the richest person in Lake City, so the money was indeed nothing to him.

"Okay." the researchers said while looking at each other. "Thank you, Mr. and Mrs.

Lucas."

The money might be the tip of an iceberg compared to how much Michael was worth, but to the researchers, it was an incredible amount.

Each check was worth ten million dollars, and many of them wouldn’t make this much money in their lifetimes.

"Dear Mr. and Mrs. researchers..." Jake said while struggling to get out of his bed.

He then stood in front of his bed, bowed deeply towards all the researchers, and said, "Thank you all for saving my life."

"It’s all good. Take care of yourself." the head of the researchers said. "When you grow up, go help more people in need."

"Of course I will," Jake said, smiling.

"Then we’re leaving now, Mr. and Mrs. Lucas," the researchers all waved their hands and Michael and Wendy went to say goodbye.

"Let me walk you guys out of the hospital." Michael said.

"No need, Mr. Lucas. Take good care of Jake." the researchers said. "Dr. Lawrence has already arranged everything for us."

"Oh, okay. Then goodbye." Michael waved his hand at them.

Although he said he wouldn’t walk them out, he and Wendy still followed them down the stairs and walked out of the hospital behind them.

It wasn’t until the researchers got into their cars and were driven away did they head back to the hospital room.
