Chapter 314: Where Else Could I Go?
Wendy was relieved when the doctor found, after some tests, that everything was fine with Todd. "He’s fine. Please don’t worry," the doctor said to her.
"Thanks, doctor," Wendy nodded. The doctor left the ward after making sure that Todd was fine. In the ward, Wendy and Todd were left alone together once again.
Wendy took a deep breath and bowed her head slightly. "I’m sorry," her tone was full of remorse. "If it wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t have been hurt at all."
"How can I blame you for that? No one knew Michael’s mother would be so extreme and do this to me," Todd said. At the mention of it, Todd found it strange and asked, "Corrine, why does Michael’s mother hate you so much? Even if she thinks that it was you who hurt Michael, it was a little strange for her to act this way."
Wendy sighed and told him the truth. "She’s mentally disturbed."
"A mental disorder?" Todd murmured. "No wonder. I told you she was a little crazy," said Todd.
"I was debating whether or not to tell you this but..." said Wendy feeling guilty.
She took a deep breath, looked at Todd, and said, "Michael stabbed himself because of what his mother did, saying that he was paying for his mother’s deed. He also said that he would compensate in anyway as long as I don’t call the police, but I didn’t agree to it. You were hurt because of me, and I can’t make any decisions on your behalf. No matter how you want to settle this, you will have my support." Wendy knew she was indebted to Todd for this one.
"Michael stabbed himself? Isn’t he already wounded?" asked Todd.
"It is because Winnie Quinn is mentally ill and not in the position to take responsibility for what she did. Michael said he would take up the responsibility. He also mentioned that although money doesn’t mean much to you, he had to pay it back somehow. Which was stabbing himself," said Wendy. "Don’t worry, whether you want to call the police or settle a score with Winnie, I’ll definitely help you. It’s just that Winnie is mentally disturbed, and if you call the police, I’m afraid that the law won’t take any action against her. Calling the police will only create a buzz out of it. Michael runs all of Lake City and will probably suppress the whole scandal.
However, if we made this a bigger deal than it is, Michael would not be able to cover it. In this way, MC Enterprise is bound to be affected. I’ll help you no matter what you want to do because that’s what they deserve and I owe you one as well." said Wendy.
Todd listened to Wendy, gauging her expression. Todd knew Wendy very well and he knew it must be very sad for her to make such a decision. No matter what kind of relationship she had with Michael, it would be hard to turn the tables on him. If they were in the past when Wendy and Michael were very close, perhaps Wendy would have helped Winnie plead for mercy. But now, how could she still be on Michael and Winnie’s side?
Todd reached up and gently touched his chest. After a moment of silence, Todd asked, "My injury, is it serious?"
"The doctor said there aren’t any major issues. You can get out of bed after a few days of recovery. You will need to be hospitalized for a week for observation and if there are no issues, you can be discharged," said Wendy.
Knowing that his injury wasn’t serious, Todd had an idea of how to handle the situation. Despite that, he still asked for Wendy’s opinion, "I’d like to know what your thoughts are."
"I ..." Wendy was afraid that Todd would ask her this question. "I don’t know, but you will have my support," said Wendy, bowing her head slightly.
"You’re on my side because I took the hit for you, right?" Todd asked.
Wendy didn’t know how to respond to his question. Todd’s injury was indeed her fault. However, their friendship wasn’t formed overnight. They have worked together for more than five years and Todd had been a huge support to her. Having her pick a side would be extremely cruel.
Looking at Wendy in silence, Todd finally said, "Let’s not talk about this. What are you going to do about Michael?"
"What else is there to be done?" Wendy gave a wry smile. The answer was very obvious to her. "It’s very clear that the relationship between he and I is nothing from a legal standpoint. He and Yonina are together now in the public’s eyes."
Todd knew that Wendy was very sad when she said this. Everything was fine initially and Wendy came back to Lake City with great joy. She worked day and night for the past two months in order to get back to Lake City and to Michael as soon as possible.
Just when she came back full of joy, the situation took a turn for the worse. This would be unacceptable to anyone. It was fortunate that Wendy was in her current state.
"So are you going to stay put in Lake City or go back to Rheinsville City?" Todd paid close attention to Wendy’s expression as he asked this question. He hoped Wendy would return to Rheinsville City. That way, they could go back together.
"I don’t know. I haven’t thought about it," Wendy said with a dejected face. "But, I don’t want to stay in Lake City. There is nothing left for me in Lake City. I had resigned from HG Enterprise, the project was on the right track, and I have no intention of returning to HG Enterprise. All of this happened so suddenly that Leah and Jake still don’t know what’s going on. I wonder what they’ll do when they find out." Wendy felt sad when she thought of her two children. What would it take for the kids to face something like this?
"If you leave Lake City, where else can you go besides heading back to Rheinsville City?" Todd asked.
"Yeah, where else could I go?" Wendy bowed her head and smiled bitterly. It looked like she had nowhere to go.
"Why don’t we get back to Rheinsville City after I’ve recovered and we can take the kids with us. They grew up in Rheinsville City anyway. If you don’t want to go back to HG Enterprise, then come to Lewis Design. The position of the chief designer has always been reserved for you," Todd said.
Wendy smiled and shook her head, "Todd, to me there is no difference between HG Enterprise and Lewis Design Company." In not so many words, she declined Todd’s offer. "One step at a time. Regardless, you have to stay in the hospital for at least ten days with this injury. There is a lot of time for me to try to come up with a plan by the time you are to be discharged."
"True indeed," Todd nodded. The incident just took place a few days ago, so it was normal that Wendy had no answer to his questions and had not decided what to do next.
"Regardless, you are more than welcome to join my company." Todd stretched out his hand and patted Wendy’s shoulder lightly. "If we join hands together we would soon become the top contender in the design industry," he said.
"Without me, Lewis Design Company would still be a top-notch company in the industry," said Wendy with a smile. Wendy went silent for a moment and she was once again depressed. She lowered her head and looked at her fingers. "Joining your company in my current situation, I would just be getting paid to do nothing," she said faintly.
Todd was heartbroken looking at Wendy’s current state. He lifted up his hand, trying to comfort Wendy, but stopped in mid-air. It would be better for him not to push Wendy too hard for now.
...
Wendy received a call from the mansion.
When the mansion called, there was no need to guess, it was Grandmother calling.
Among the people in the mansion, Grandmother was the only one who always loved her.
Before this, Wendy had just returned to Lake City and called the mansion to look for Michael.
It seemed like it had just happened recently.
In just two to three days, everything had changed.
Wendy looked down at the caller ID and was a little afraid to answer it. She didn’t know what she would say if she answered the phone.
The phone kept ringing until it stopped but Wendy still didn’t have the courage to pick it up.
When Todd saw this, he asked, "Who’s calling? Why don’t you answer it?"
Sighing, Wendy whispered, "It’s Grandmother."
Todd knew who Wendy’s so-called Grandmother was. He had heard Wendy mention her before occasionally.
However, he was not sure what kind of relationship Grandmother had with Wendy, so he asked with concern, "Is she calling to scold you?"
Wendy shook her head.
Todd frowned with confusion.
Todd thought if she didn’t know, or was she saying that Grandmother was not blaming her?
Todd figured as she was Michael’s own Grandmother, and now it was rumored that Wendy had stabbed Michael, then, this Grandmother must have thought so too.
Looking at Wendy’s sullen expression, Todd reached out and patted her shoulder to comfort her by saying, "It’s okay, I’m here, the Lucas family can’t hurt you anymore."
Hearing this, Wendy looked up at Todd and said with a forced smile, "If you’re already acting like this, what can you possibly do if someone else hurts me? This is Lucas’ place."
"So come back to Rheinsville City with me," Todd said, "Take the two of them with you. You have been living in Rheinsville City for so many years, so you are familiar and accustomed to the city. In the past, you were determined to return for revenge.
But now, I know that what you value more is no longer revenge. In that case, raising two children properly is more important than anything else, isn’t it?"
Todd was right, but there was no way for Wendy to leave so quickly.
"I’ll think about it." Wendy had just finished saying this when her phone rang again.
It was still the mansion calling.
Wendy took a deep breath.
She knew that it was not possible to ignore this call.
Grandmother had loved her for so many years, after all, so she couldn’t avoid Grandmother.
Her fingers were trembling as she tapped the answer button. As soon as she picked up, Grandmother’s anxious voice came over the phone saying, "Wendy, where are you now? How are you? And Michael, what’s wrong with him? How did you guys get into this mess...?"
Grandmother had many questions, and undoubtedly, they expressed her concern.
Wendy didn’t know how to explain what’s happened.
After a moment of silence, Wendy said, "Grandmother, I don’t know how to explain these things to you but you don’t have to worry too much. Michael’s life should not be in danger."
Although Wendy did not wait for Michael to come out of the operating room before she left, she could guess that Michael’s life was not in danger.
Otherwise, it would have been a mess outside.
At least, if something happened, Yonina, as Michael’s girlfriend, would have come to her.
The fact that everything was calm now meant that nothing terrible had happened.
"I know about Michael’s situation..." Grandmother’s tone was tinged with concern as she said, "I’m asking you now. How are you doing?"
