Chapter 315: Repeated With A Smile
When she heard Grandmother’s concern for her, Wendy’s eyes got a little teary.
What else could she do?
Reaching out to wipe the tears from her eyes, Wendy said with great self-restraint, "I... I’m fine."
"Where are you now?" Grandmother simply did not believe Wendy’s claim that she was fine.
"I’m really fine, Grandmother..." Wendy said, "If there’s nothing else, I’ll hang up now."
After saying that, Wendy hung up the phone before Grandmother could say anything.
She was afraid that if she waited any longer, she would cry and Grandmother would hear her.
When Todd saw her sobbing, he reached out and patted her shoulder. He didn’t know what else to say at this point, and could only keep her company in silence.
Then, Wendy got another call. It was her mother, Mary, who called.
Wendy’s was feeling very irritated. She didn’t want to answer the phone at all. She didn’t want to answer any phone calls. But she knew that Mary was also concerned about her.
Wendy picked up the phone and said first, "Mom, I’m fine, so don’t worry about me, really."
When Mary heard Wendy’s words, she became increasingly worried.
"I have something to do, so, I’ll hang up now." After saying that, Wendy hung up the phone. On this day, Wendy actually had a lot of calls coming in, Including calls from Zen, the employees of HG Enterprise, and some employees of MC Enterprise.
There were even calls from some clients that she had worked with. Michael’s incident had become so widespread that everyone knew about it. After Wendy hung up the phone, she simply turned it off.
Having done that, she felt that the whole world became peaceful. With her eyes closed and tears sliding down her cheeks, Wendy took a deep breath and tried to control her emotions.
She was here now to take care of Todd, not to have Todd comfort her. Wendy spent the whole night in the hospital taking care of Todd.
The next day, Wendy woke up early in the morning.
She remembered that the doctor had said that Todd could eat some liquid food today.
The takeaway food bought was not as good as the food she made. Looking at the time, she saw that it was just after seven o’clock in the morning. Todd wasn’t awake yet.
After thinking about it, Wendy found a pen and paper, wrote a note and placed it next to the bed with a simple message saying, "I’m going back and will be back soon.
Before she left, Wendy went to the nurses and explained that she was leaving and asked them to arrange for someone to watch Todd for a while. After everything was done, Wendy felt comfortable leaving.
However, when she was walking out, she met Yonina who arrived at the hospital.
Seeing Yonina, Wendy subconsciously made a detour. She didn’t want to see Yonina right now.
But Yonina walked directly to meet her. "Miss Stewart...," said Yonina as she stood in front of Wendy’s face, and her mood was indiscernible.
"I thought you said I was Corrine now?" Wendy said indifferently. "It is better to be more direct when addressing me."
"Sorry..." Yonina said.
"If there is nothing important, I hope you won’t block my way," Wendy said and her eyes were filled with disdain.
"I..." Yonina indeed had nothing else to say. It was just that Yonina always felt some guilt in her heart as this matter had gone too far. She felt especially guilty towards Wendy.
But the matter had come to this, so, she and Michael had no choice but to go on.
"I just wanted to tell you that Michael’s injury is not serious. As long as he recuperates well, he will be discharged from the hospital in a short time." Yonina spoke up.
"Sorry, I don’t really care." After Wendy finished her sentence nonchalantly, she then walked around Yonina and left.
When answering the phone in front of Todd or in front of anyone she knew, Wendy didn’t dare to cry too loudly. But she was just a woman after all.
She had loved the man with all her heart for so many years, and all she believed in collapsed in just one night. Even the strongest heart in the world could not bear such a blow.
So, as soon as she got into the cab, Wendy couldn’t stop crying. The driver was so frightened that he panicked.
"Miss ... Are you okay?" The driver stammered, "Is something wrong? Do you need me to call the police for you?"
The driver looked at Wendy in the back seat through the rearview mirror but couldn’t see her face. He could only hear her crying loudly with her head down.
This was daytime. If it were nighttime, the driver would have been too scared to drive her.
"It’s okay, just drive to where I tell you," Wendy did not dare to continue crying when she heard the driver’s words.
She sniffled, lowered her head, and tried not to make any more crying noises.
When the driver saw that Wendy had quieted down, he became more and more puzzled as to what was going on.
Looking at the rearview mirror, the driver kindly comforted her and said, "In this life, there are nine out of ten things that are regrettable. But, no matter how bad things are, they will pass.
Isn’t there a song lyric that goes like this? The things that you are crying about will one day be repeated with a smile.
If you think something is bigger than the sky now, after a few years, perhaps a dozen years, you will look back and find that it was actually a small, frivolous thing. If you don’t believe me, think about all the things you were sad and upset about when you were a kid. Do you think it’s relevant now?"
The driver didn’t hear Wendy’s voice and thought she was listening, so he continued, "Like me when my ex-wife cheated on me, I felt like the world was ending.
I loved her very much, treated her very well, did all the housework, gave her all the pay but she thought I had no guts, no individuality, and preferred a gangster outside.
She also said that he was more macho.
At that time, she insisted on divorcing me to leave with the gangster and even abandoned her own daughter. I had no choice but to agree to the divorce.
At that time, I was drunk day and night. I was always hungover and became hospitalized several times due to my drinking until I really almost lost my life.
But then, time slowly passed. I found that everything slowly changed.
I met a new woman who is gentle and considerate and she brought me a son. We started a new family and everything is finally going in the right direction. Now, I’m glad I divorced my ex-wife, otherwise, I wouldn’t have met my current wife.
So, girl, no one knows if the end is good or bad when it comes to things in this world.
The process may be very painful and sad but as long as you get through it, there will always be a new world waiting for you."
As Wendy listened to the driver’s words, she felt mixed emotions. It turned out that there were so many people in this world who suffered the same fate as her.
"What about your ex-wife? What happened to her?" Wendy asked.
"She got pregnant and was abandoned by the gangster. She came back to me and pestered me to remarry her. I turned her down without even thinking about it, and now, I don’t know how she’s doing. But no matter what, it has nothing to do with me anymore." When the driver heard Wendy ask him this question, he understood.
It seemed that she was also suffering from heartbreak.
This driver also had a history. He actually managed to put Wendy in a better mood by chatting with her.
Soon, the car arrived at the end of the neighborhood.
"Here we are ..." the driver said as he parked the car.
"Thank you." Wendy got out of the car and nodded at the driver.
She thanked him for all that he had shared with her.
When she got home, Wendy took out her keys and opened the door to her room.
What she didn’t expect, however, was to see Mary as soon as she entered the house.
"Mom..." Wendy was a little surprised and said, "What are you doing here?"
When Mary saw that Wendy was back, she immediately stood up and walked to her.
Mary immediately saw Wendy’s red and swollen eyes and said, "After such a big incident, could I not come?"
"Didn’t I say that I’m fine?" Wendy said with her head bowed.
Mary reached out and hugged Wendy, sighed and said, "Are you still not telling the truth to mom?"
"Mommy..." The two children heard Wendy come back and ran over as well.
Leah tilted her head and asked, "Mommy, why did you turn off the phone when we called you? Jake and I were so worried about you."
"I..." Wendy did turn her phone off, and said, "The battery is dead."
"Then get your phone out and Leah will go charge it for you," Leah said as she held out her hand.
Wendy took her phone out of her bag and handed it to her. Leah didn’t know what was going on yet, but Jake did.
He looked at Wendy, who was still wearing her evening gown, and said with a deep frown, "Mommy, go take a shower and change your clothes."
Wendy came back today with the intention of taking a shower and making breakfast for Todd.
Nodding, Wendy said, "I’ll go take a shower then. Mom, stay in Lake City for a few more days while you’re here."
"You don’t have to worry about me for now." Mary sighed and looked at Wendy’s pale face that looked very sickly and said, "Go ahead and take a shower. I’ll go make you some breakfast."
"I’ve already made breakfast..." Zess came out of the kitchen and said, "Let’s have breakfast when Wendy finishes her shower." Wendy nodded her head.
"Mommy, the phone still has battery...," Leah’s voice came from the side with some confusion, "Leah just turned it on and looked at it. It still has 30 percent battery."
"Mommy’s phone is probably broken." Jake walked over and said to Leah, "Go back and buy Mommy a new phone."
"Then, it’s broken." With that, Leah got up, ran into her room, and took out the money jar and handed it to Jake as she said, "Jake, here’s all the money I saved. See if it’s enough to buy a phone."
Jake didn’t take the money jar and said, "I have more money than you.
I’ll just buy it for mommy. Keep your money for the new Barbie dolls."
"Then let’s each split it." Leah opened the money jar and took out twenty to thirty bills and handed them to Jake.
When Jake saw how insistent Leah was, he took the money. Otherwise, she would keep pestering him later on.
Leah didn’t know but Jake knew exactly why Wendy’s phone was turned off.
Seeing that Jake accepted the money, Leah then took the money jar and put it back inside the room.
At that time, Wendy had already gone into the bathroom.
The bathtub was filled with water and Wendy soaked her whole body in it.
She even soaked her whole head in it.
The feeling of suffocation was very unpleasant for her and countless scenes flashed through her mind.
Her body subconsciously wanted to let her head emerge from the water, but her consciousness made Wendy not want to get up.
She kind of thought, she should just stay like this...
