Chapter 313: It Is My Turn To Take Care Of You
Michael looked at Wendy, heartbroken and helpless. Wendy turned to him and asked, "I would like to ask you, Mr. CEO, how do you plan on compensating me?"
Michael took a deep breath. "I know you are not short of money, and any form of materialistic compensation is meaningless," he said. After speaking, Michael lowered his head slightly and turned to his bodyguard. "Pass me a dagger," he ordered.
The bodyguard had no idea what Michael was going to do with it, but he passed the dagger regardless. Yonina and Wendy watched Michael hold on to the dagger, not knowing what he was going to do for a moment. When they finally realized, the dagger had already been stabbed into Michael’s chest.
The preexisting wound on his chest worsened after the stabbing. The pain Michael felt left him unable to stand straight and he fell to the ground.
Yonina immediately went up and grabbed him. "Are you out of your mind, Michael? You don’t have to be so extreme!"
Wendy was shocked by Michael’s actions and covered her mouth in terror, backing away a few steps. Is this what he meant as ’compensation’? Wendy could not believe what she just saw. Her tears ran down her face and fingers.
"Michael, your compensation means nothing to Todd!" Wendy cried. "Even if you die here today, Todd is still seriously injured."
"I know you are speaking out on Todd’s behalf," Michael spoke with pale lips as he endured the pain. "But my mother has mental problems. Even if you call the police, the police won’t be able to deal with her.
You’re right. Even if I die here today, Todd has been injured. What’s done is done.
But I don’t have any better ways. You can even give me another suggestion on how to compensate you. As long you don’t call the police, I will accept any alternatives."
"Then your mother should be stabbed as well!" Wendy said with rage in her eyes.
"I will pay for what my mother did," Michael said. "If you feel that one knife wound is not enough, I will take another."
After speaking, Michael pulled out the dagger from his chest. Watching Michael attempt to stab himself again, Yonina was shocked, and immediately reached out to stop him. "Are you crazy? Maniac! You are indeed a maniac!"
Wendy shook her head in disbelief. Yonina snatched the dagger from Michael and threw it on the ground. She threw far so that he could not reach it.
"I’m sorry Wendy," Michael apologized on behalf of Winnie and also for him actions.
"Sorry? Sorry?" Wendy was at a loss for words. "There is no point in apologizing.
What difference does it make? Tell me!"
"I know that it is useless." Michael endured the pain and lowered his head. He didn’t know what else to say for a moment. The atmosphere once again quieted down.
Soon the doctor saw the situation and quickly walked over. When the doctor saw Michael’s bleeding, he immediately called for someone to take him into the operating room.
Outside the operating room, only Wendy and Yonina were left with a few bodyguards. Yonina looked at Wendy with a frown. She tried to say something to her, but she didn’t and all she did was give a long sigh. The situation was really getting out of hand.
Wendy squatted in a corner with her eyes closed. She felt a sharp pain in her chest.
Her mind was filled with images of Michael stabbing himself just now.
Michael took the blame for his mother and went through all the pain that Todd had suffered by stabbing himself just to draw a line with her? It had been just one night, but Wendy felt that Michael had become unfamiliar to her. It was to the point that even she couldn’t even recognize him.
....
Winnie’s attack did not hit Todd in a vital spot. He entered the operating room before Michael and since he had only one injury, he also came out before Michael.
Wendy saw Todd being pushed out of the operating room, his eyes closed with a pale face and his chest bandaged. Tears that she has been holding back, finally gushed out.
Todd took the hit for her.
No one expected that coming back for a business party would end up this way. If she had known, Wendy would not have come back to Lake City. Wendy remembered that she deliberately didn’t tell Michael about her return because she wanted to surprise him.
Wendy felt that her actions had been ridiculous. She was afraid that Michael had been hoping that she had never come back during his lifetime.
"The surgery was a success," the doctor said.
After hearing the news Wendy’s tears turned into laughter as she thanked him repeatedly, "Thank you, doctor."
Wendy walked next to the bed that was carrying Todd slowly, her vision blurred by tears. After a few steps, she looked toward the other operating room which was still lit. Her eyes glistened. Michael was injured twice in the same place. She was not sure what would happen to him.
Yonina saw Wendy stop and sighed slightly. She walked forward, and asked, "Michael should be coming out soon, too. Don’t you want to wait?"
Yonina’s words pulled Wendy’s thoughts back to reality. She reached up and wiped away the tears from her face. and said decisively, "No. You’re his girlfriend now," she said decisively. "I have nothing to do with him."
Yonina’s words just then had really hurt Wendy. Wendy had become Corrine Swift and there was no longer a legal relationship between her and Michael as husband and wife. Michael did not need to ask Wendy for her consent before meeting anyone new. Legally, Michael was single.
Michael didn’t refute this fact at that time either. Wendy knew that this was what Michael thought, too. Since she was already an outsider, no matter what kind of injury Michael had, whether he was dead or alive, what did it have to do with her?
Making a fool of herself would only make her a laughing stock.
Wendy shifted her attention away and didn’t look at the operating room again. She turned around and followed Todd into his ward. "When will he be awake?" Wendy asked the doctor with tears still in her eyes.
"The anesthetic will not wear off for another half an hour. When it does, he will slowly regain consciousness and wake up," the doctor answered.
"Can he eat when he wakes up?" Wendy asked. "What kind of food should he have?"
The doctor looked at Wendy nervously. "It is not recommended for him to consume any food right after the operation," he said with a smile. "He can start taking some food in liquid form starting tomorrow. The nurse will update you on the appropriate food that he can consume after that."
"Thanks, doctor," Wendy nodded, thanking him sincerely.
"You’re welcome," the doctor replied before leaving the ward.
Wendy sat by the bed, looking at Todd lying there, with mixed feelings. She recalled her memories with Todd and naturally thought back to how Todd took care of her for all these years.
In terms of her career, before Todd had set up his own company, they had still been working at HG corporate. Todd would ensure she ate well every day and helped her take care of her two children. He helped Wendy when she was lost in her work and he was her life coach. In addition to Timothy Woods, Wendy’s mentor, Todd was also a big part of the reason for her success in design today.
...
Wendy worked very hard during that time. She had wanted to strengthen her mind and soul before heading back to Lake City to seek revenge on Michael. Therefore, she had spent almost all of her time at work. It was precisely her desperate effort that enabled her to achieve a place in the design world so quickly. Due to her hard work, her body naturally often had problems.
During the days when Wendy worked as an assistant for Michael, for a long time, she often eat irregularly and suffered from chronic malnutrition. After giving birth, Wendy’s physical condition became worse. She worked around the clock. Wendy has been in and out of the hospital many times because of stomach problems and low blood sugar. Every time Wendy woke up, the first person she would see was Todd.
Later, Todd supervised Wendy and had to watch her eat three meals a day in order to ease his mind of worries. Thanks to him Wendy’s stomach had recovered for a long time, and then gradually improved.
Thinking of these things, Wendy’s eyes welled up with tears. She reached out and held Todd’s hand, tears dripping onto the back of his hand. "If you hadn’t been taking care of me, I wouldn’t be alive now," Wendy said softly. "Speaking of which, this is the first time I’ve been in the hospital with you in the bed and not me. You’ve taken care of me so many times. This time, it is my turn to take care of you." She closed her eyes and the tears dripped down again.
Wendy just silently watched over him by the bed. Finally, Todd woke up. Wendy was truly and completely relieved the moment she saw him open his eyes.
"Todd, you finally woke up," Wendy spoke, fully overjoyed. "Are you feeling okay?
Are you thirsty? Hungry? Oh no, you can’t eat anything yet. Do you remember what happened? Can you see me?"
Todd was amused by Wendy’s questions. His voice was weak and his wound was a little painful when he laughed. Todd coughed and immediately his face turned pale from the pain.
Wendy was so frightened that she immediately pressed the call bell. "Hello, the patient is awake, but it seems that he is not in good condition," she said to the nurse. "Could you please come and take a look?"
"Sure. We’ll be right there."
After the call bell was disconnected, Wendy immediately asked Todd about his condition, "Are you feeling okay? It’s very uncomfortable, isn’t it?"
Todd swallowed hard and waved his hand. "I’m fine," he sounded a little weak as he spoke. "I just laughed too hard at what you said and it hurt my wound."
"Laughed?" Wendy was confused. "What are you laughing at?" She wondered if there was anything ridiculous about what she said.
"It was just a stab wound to the chest. What does it have to do with my eyes? You’re even asking if I can remember what happened? Are you afraid that I might be suffering from amnesia?" Todd became more amused as he talked about it.
Wendy finally realized what he was laughing at. "I just asked out of excitement," she said, breathing a sigh of relief. "Maybe it’s because I had amnesia and temporarily loss my eyesight that sparked my question."
After listening to Wendy, Todd couldn’t smile anymore. Ever since Todd met Wendy, she has been someone that he felt sorry for. What she had endured and been hurt by was not something that the average person could easily withstand. A heavy silence fell upon the room.
Fortunately, the doctor came into the ward with the other medical staff and quickly broke the silence. "Where do you feel discomfort? Let me take a look."
