Chapter 199: Chapter 199 The Knight Family’s Silent Approval
Rose hadn’t expected things to develop this way.
After all, ancestral rites were traditionally attended only by family members.
And the fact that Samantha was here meant only one thing—
She had been granted special permission by the Knight family.
Margaret didn’t appear surprised by Samantha’s arrival. Although she wasn’t particularly warm, she at least acknowledged her presence.
"You’re back. Have a seat and rest for a while. Bring Miss Hill some refreshments."
This was Samantha’s first visit to the Knight family estate since the scandal involving her and Ryan had erupted.
Previously, the Knight family had completely shut her out.
To put it bluntly, if Ryan hadn’t protected her, the Knight family would never have let the Hill family off so easily.
Rose understood this perfectly.
So given the current situation...
"Thank you, Grandmother."
Ignoring Rose entirely, Samantha stepped forward with an obedient smile.
Margaret merely nodded. "Mm."
Rose stood frozen not far away.
Watching this absurd scene unfold before her.
The Knight family...
They seemed prepared to accept Samantha.
Or perhaps they had simply decided to stop interfering in Ryan’s relationship with the country’s most celebrated young medical prodigy.
And now Samantha had stepped directly into the family home.
Right in front of her.
The legal Mrs. Knight.
"What would you like to drink?"
As her thoughts wandered, a cold voice reached her ears.
At some point, Ryan had already walked past her. Seeing the servants preparing refreshments, he asked the question in calm and measured tone.
Rose almost laughed when she saw his composed expression.
Bringing his mistress to an annual memorial ceremony—a gathering reserved exclusively for family members—while his legal wife stood present as a member of the family was practically the same as officially introducing Samantha to the Knight family.
He was openly presenting her to the elders.
Such a ruthless act felt exactly like something Ryan would do.
In that moment, Rose could almost feel the servants’ sighs, pity, and contempt surrounding her.
On an occasion like this, everyone present understood the message.
Mr. Knight was preparing to welcome a new wife.
Rose looked at the man standing before her.
His eyes seemed covered by a thin layer of ice.
Time had taught her one simple truth:
You cannot warm someone who does not love you.
To think that she had to endure such humiliation today.
No wonder Samantha had entered with such confidence.
The Knight family had already given its silent approval.
Rose didn’t answer Ryan.
She simply turned and walked out into the courtyard.
She wanted to leave immediately.
But she had come here for the divorce papers.
She needed to stay calm.
She needed to endure this.
Ryan watched her retreating figure.
No emotion appeared in his eyes.
A moment later, he withdrew his gaze.
He made no move to follow her.
Nor did he offer any explanation.
Rose had barely stepped outside when Isabella suddenly appeared.
With obvious sarcasm, she said, "If you had even half of Samantha’s ability, this family wouldn’t have ended up like this. Look at her now. She’s doing incredibly well. Any family would value someone like her."
Samantha’s project had become enormously successful.
So successful that even the Knight family had received praise because of it.
That success had become the very reason Samantha could stand inside the Knight family today.
Rose didn’t need Isabella to remind her what kind of family the Knights were.
She replied calmly, "Your son isn’t very capable either. He’s about to be released from prison, yet he couldn’t even keep his fiancée. What good is he?"
Isabella’s expression immediately darkened. "Rose! Stop trying to save face! Can’t you see what’s happening today? Ryan has a much better chance of marrying Samantha now!"
The fact that the Knight family had allowed Samantha to attend today was practically an acknowledgment.
Everyone was practical.
Especially wealthy families.
If something benefited the family, that came first.
Samantha...
Was about to take her rightful place.
Surprisingly, Rose didn’t feel sad.
The love she once had for Ryan had already been worn away until nothing remained.
She simply couldn’t understand one thing.
If the Knight family had already accepted Samantha’s presence at the memorial ceremony, why insist that she come back and witness it personally?
Isabella herself was clearly unhappy.
If Samantha entered the family, it would mean her son had lost her forever.
Especially with Ethan’s release from prison approaching.
Seeing that Rose remained calm and showed no intention of fighting for her husband, Isabella became even angrier and stormed away.
Rose remained where she stood.
But she had found her answer.
This was the perfect opportunity.
Ethan would be released next month.
Ryan was clearly doing everything possible to raise Samantha’s status before then, ensuring that the Knight family accepted her completely.
Perhaps he intended to secure an engagement before Ethan returned.
Perhaps he wanted to make everything irreversible.
Rose couldn’t help but admire his calculations.
Ryan was difficult to understand.
But he was incredibly meticulous.
Every move had already been planned.
Lowering her eyes, she let out a quiet, mocking laugh.
Even after realizing Ryan’s intentions, Rose didn’t leave.
She still hadn’t achieved her own goal.
As evening fell, the entire Knight family gathered inside the Knight estate’s memorial hall.
The room was lined with portraits of previous generations, their names and accomplishments engraved beneath gilded frames. Every year, the family gathered here to honor the founders of the Knight family and reaffirm the family’s legacy.
Samantha was clearly in excellent spirits.
Having gained the family’s approval, she wore a bright smile.
When it came time to place the ceremonial white roses before the family memorial, Rose followed the tradition she had observed for years.
As Ryan prepared to step forward, she reached for a rose.
Traditionally, husbands and wives presented their flowers together.
But before she could take one, another hand reached out.
Several roses were taken.
Then the person walked directly to Ryan’s side.
Rose looked up.
Samantha was already standing shoulder to shoulder with Ryan.
She looked sincerely toward Margaret.
"Grandmother, this is my first time attending the family ceremony. May I also pay my respects to the Knight family?"
The moment she finished speaking, countless meaningful glances fell upon Rose.
She still stood alone.
She hadn’t even received a flower.
Rose gently rubbed the stem between her fingertips, quietly watching the scene before her.
Samantha had deliberately taken the position that should have belonged to Ryan’s wife.
She intended to stand beside him during the ceremony.
Ryan seemed to notice Rose’s gaze.
He glanced toward her.
But he didn’t stop Samantha.
Margaret remained expressionless.
She understood perfectly what Samantha was implying.
Seated in the place of honor, she said lightly, "It’s good to have respect for family tradition."
With that single sentence, the entire situation became clear.
Margaret had no intention of interfering with these two so-called star-crossed lovers any longer.
Unmarried.
Unrecognized.
And morally questionable.
Yet she had chosen to turn a blind eye.
It was silent approval.
Or perhaps...
A quiet attempt at matchmaking.
Samantha’s eyes filled with satisfaction.
She even glanced openly at Rose and offered a faint smile.
The gesture felt like a slap across Rose’s face.
At that moment, Rose had become the biggest joke in the room.
