Chapter 137: Chapter 137 The Secret Hidden in the Bennett Family

Rose shook her head.

"I’m not sure. He went out of his way to come here with Samantha, so maybe it was part of the plan."

After all, they already had the divorce certificate.

It was only natural for Ryan to want to give the woman he loved a proper place by his side as soon as possible.

Caleb couldn’t detect even a hint of sadness on Rose’s face.

He wanted to comfort her, but he didn’t know where to begin.

Seven years.

No matter how love ended, the wounds left behind didn’t disappear overnight.

Even when the feelings were gone, the scars still ached.

Rose smiled indifferently, patted Caleb on the shoulder, and returned to her room.

She gave no further thought to whatever Samantha and Ryan might be doing that night.

Instead, she sent Ariel several photos she had taken during the day.

After taking a shower, she was getting ready for bed when something fell out of her coat pocket.

A ring.

Rose picked it up and scratched her head.

She wasn’t sure what to do with it.

Should she return it to Trevor?

That didn’t seem right either.

After all, he hadn’t even bought it himself, and going out of her way to return it might make things unnecessarily awkward.

Just as she was debating what to do, the doorbell rang.

Assuming it was Caleb, Rose slipped the ring back into her coat pocket and walked to the door.

But when she opened it, she froze.

Ryan stood outside.

He was still wearing the same clothes from earlier.

His sharp features looked even more striking under the hallway lights.

"Aren’t you supposed to be with—"

Before she could finish, Ryan interrupted.

"Come back to New York with me. Right now."

His voice was low and serious. "Your grandfather is in surgery."

Rose’s face instantly turned pale.

All the color drained from it.

Ryan, by contrast, remained remarkably calm.

Without waiting for an invitation, he walked into the room, opened her suitcase, folded her coat inside, added the charger from the bedside table, and zipped it shut.

Glancing at his watch, he said calmly, "It’s rush hour. Commercial flights are sold out. I arranged a private jet on the way here. By the time we reach the airport, the flight clearance should be approved."

Rose’s mind went completely blank.

Her grandfather was ninety years old.

She didn’t dare imagine what would happen if something went wrong.

By the time she regained her senses, she was already sitting in the car.

That very night, they rushed back to New York.

The entire trip was a race against time.

When Rose arrived at the hospital, Gabriel was still in surgery.

The doctor explained, "The patient suffered a fall and fractured his lower leg. At present, his life is not in danger."

Even so, Rose couldn’t relax.

She was a medical student.

She understood better than most the serious complications that could follow a fracture in someone of Gabriel’s age.

She sat in the hallway, absentmindedly picking at her fingernails.

It was the only way she knew how to release the anxiety building inside her.

Ryan walked over and immediately noticed the familiar habit.

Whenever Rose was anxious, angry, or upset, she would pick at the same spot until the skin became raw.

Stopping in front of her, he removed the expensive watch from his wrist.

Then he bent down and placed it into her hands.

"Watch the time."

His voice was calm. "That way, you’ll know how long he’s been in there."

Only then did Rose look down at the silver watch resting in her palms, still carrying his body heat.

Without realizing it, she started fidgeting with it.

Ryan glanced at her hands before sitting down beside her.

His tone remained cool and detached.

Normally it sounded heartless.

Strangely enough, at that moment, it was reassuring.

"I checked on him when I arrived. It shouldn’t be anything serious."

Only then did Rose remember something.

She turned toward him. "Why did you find out before I did?"

Ryan answered casually, "The hospital still has my number listed as an emergency contact."

Rose nodded.

Then she paused. "Didn’t you change your number?"

Ryan looked toward the operating room.

"He’s coming out."

Immediately, he stood.

Rose hurried over as well.

The surgery had been completed successfully.

Although Gabriel was still unconscious from the anesthesia, the doctor reassured them.

"He’s been well cared for over the years and is in relatively good health for his age. There doesn’t appear to be any organ damage. However, recovery will take longer because of his age."

Rose finally breathed a sigh of relief.

She nodded repeatedly as the doctor explained the recovery plan.

Once Gabriel had been transferred to a private room, she finally had time to assess his condition herself.

She checked his condition.

Reviewed every medication on his chart.

Examined the dosages.

Verified the treatment plan.

Years of medical training allowed her to understand everything at a glance.

Ryan sat quietly on the sofa, watching her work.

Eventually, Rose noticed him.

Looking up, she said, "Sorry about that. I interrupted your time with Samantha and ruined your proposal."

Ryan didn’t even lift his head. "No need to apologize."

His voice remained flat. "I also ruined your chance to become a stepmother too.""

Rose stared at him.

She knew Ryan had a sharp tongue.

His remarks always seemed to strike out of nowhere.

Whether he was mocking her or simply stating a fact was impossible to tell.

His tone was always frustratingly ambiguous.

After confirming that Gabriel’s condition was stable, Rose finally sat down.

She sent Caleb a message updating him on the situation.

Then she hesitated.

Instead of closing her phone, she opened Trevor’s chat window.

Rose: [Mr. Robinson, I had to return to New York unexpectedly. You...]

Before she could finish typing, she noticed Ryan standing beside the hospital bed.

She immediately locked her phone and slipped it away.

She had no intention of letting him pry into her private affairs.

She wasn’t sure whether he had seen anything.

Ryan glanced at her. "Grandpa seems to be waking up."

Rose hurried over.

Gabriel’s eyes were still unfocused.

The anesthesia hadn’t fully worn off.

He murmured incoherently under his breath.

Rose leaned closer. "Grandpa?"

Only then did Gabriel seem to recognize her.

Even so, he still looked dazed.

"RoRo..."

His voice was weak. "Grandpa is getting old. I’m afraid I don’t have many years left."

Rose’s eyes instantly filled with tears.

Gabriel reached out and squeezed her hand.

"RoRo... there’s something I’ve never told you."

His breathing grew uneven. "The Bennett family has a secret."

"I need to tell you..."

Rose held his hand tightly. "What is it, Grandpa?"

Gabriel looked at her through half-open eyes.

Then, with great effort, he whispered, "You... you’re not your mother’s biological daughter..."

Rose froze.

The room fell silent.

Ryan’s eyes narrowed abruptly.
