Chapter 138: Chapter 138 The Ring Disappeared
Perhaps because of the anesthesia, Gabriel’s thoughts were still scattered.
After revealing that secret, he immediately drifted to another topic, his words becoming slurred and incoherent.
Rose, however, sat frozen.
Unable to react.
She wasn’t a Bennett?
She wasn’t even her mother’s biological daughter?
The revelation hit her like a thunderbolt.
For twenty-seven years, her entire sense of identity had been built on that foundation.
Now, in a single moment, everything seemed to crumble.
Ryan had clearly heard it as well.
Without meaning to, he had just uncovered a long-buried Bennett family secret.
His gaze lingered on Rose for a long moment.
A dark, thoughtful look flashed through his eyes.
When he noticed her shoulders stiffening and her posture becoming rigid, he walked over, gently pulled her upright, and guided her back into her chair.
"Let’s wait until Grandpa is more lucid before discussing this."
Rose’s mind was in complete chaos.
Part of her desperately wanted answers.
Another part resisted them with everything she had.
The person who loved her most in the world—
Could he really not be related to her by blood?
Yet the more she thought about it, the more things started to make sense.
No wonder.
No wonder Logan could abandon her without hesitation.
No wonder he never seemed to care whether she lived or died.
How could a father be so cruel to his own daughter?
Unless...
He wasn’t her father at all.
Across the room, Ryan noticed Rose unconsciously picking at his watch again.
The diamond on the bezel looked as though it might be pried loose at any moment.
He glanced at it once, then looked away, completely unconcerned.
Rose eventually forced herself to calm down.
Looking up, she said quietly, "I can handle things here. You should go take care of your own business."
Ryan had arranged a private jet and rushed her back to New York.
He had already done more than enough.
But halfway through speaking, Rose stopped.
At some point, Ryan had leaned back against the sofa and fallen asleep.
She glanced at the time.
It was nearly two in the morning.
After a moment’s hesitation, she decided not to wake him.
That night, she curled up on the sofa but barely slept.
Her dreams were filled with Gabriel’s words.
You’re not your mother’s biological daughter.
Again and again.
The revelation left her feeling as though the ground beneath her feet had vanished.
As if everything familiar had suddenly disappeared.
She clung tightly to a pillow, desperately seeking some sense of security.
The next morning, doctors and nurses arrived for their routine rounds.
Ryan was already gone.
But Rose realized she was still holding his watch.
Looking down, she froze.
Two tiny diamonds had actually been loosened.
"Ms. Bennett."
The attending physician stepped forward with a reassuring smile.
"The patient is doing very well. There’s nothing to worry about."
Rose rubbed her temples. "All right. I’ll stay and take care of him."
The doctor shook his head. "That won’t be necessary. The hospital has already arranged a twenty-four-hour caregiver."
Rose blinked. "The hospital arranged one?"
"For free?"
The doctor smiled. "Your husband has already taken care of all the expenses."
As he spoke, he handed her several forms.
Most required a family member’s signature.
Ryan had already signed every one of them.
Under the relationship field, he had listed himself as: Grandson-in-law.
"..."
Rose stared at the paperwork.
Ryan had never been stingy.
In fact, he was remarkably considerate.
The problem was that his thoughtfulness had never belonged exclusively to her.
Whether he loved someone or not, he still handled responsibilities properly.
"Thank you."
She lowered the paperwork.
But she never saw Ryan again.
Most likely, he had already returned to Samantha.
His priorities had always been obvious.
Rose remained at the hospital for another day.
Unfortunately, Gabriel drifted in and out of sleep the entire time.
She never found an opportunity to ask about her origins.
When she finally put on her coat to leave, she instinctively reached into the pocket.
It was empty.
The ring was gone.
Rose searched the room thoroughly.
She checked every drawer, every corner, every cushion.
Nothing.
The ring had vanished.
She had been debating whether to return it to Trevor.
Now she couldn’t even find it.
In her rush to return from Hong Kong, she had simply tossed it into her coat pocket.
The pocket wasn’t deep, and it could have fallen out anywhere.
After searching for nearly half an hour, she finally gave up.
There was nothing she could do.
With no other choice, she turned her attention back to G.S.
The cardiovascular drug project was progressing smoothly.
Her next priority was the brain tumor surgical robot project.
It was a far more complex challenge.
Thanks to Ryan’s near-philanthropic level of funding, development had advanced rapidly.
Now she wanted to build a more elite research team.
She already had someone in mind.
Unfortunately, the candidate was overseas.
She immediately began reaching out through her contacts.
Because of Gabriel’s hospitalization and the sleepless nights that followed, her menstrual cycle arrived early.
After taking pain medication, Rose continued working as usual.
The next morning, she arrived at the R&D laboratory.
Caleb immediately walked over. "How’s Grandpa Gabriel doing?"
Rose nodded. "He’s fine. Nothing serious."
She smiled faintly. "The hospital arranged a twenty-four-hour caregiver."
Only then did Caleb relax.
"Samantha came by again."
Rose frowned. "What does she want now?"
"She’s still insisting on seeing Aster."
Caleb looked annoyed. "And she still hasn’t given up on the Aetheris Medical AI database. She wants access so she can use it for her own project."
Rose wasn’t feeling well enough to care.
"Handle it however you think is best."
Caleb poured her a cup of hot water before leaving.
By the end of the workday, every bone in Rose’s body ached.
As a child, she had been relatively healthy.
But severe blood loss during her first menstrual cycle had left lasting complications.
Every month was difficult.
She headed downstairs, her face noticeably pale.
Only then did she realize it was raining.
And standing outside the building—
Was Samantha.
The moment Samantha saw her, she let out a cold laugh.
"It looks like Mr. Robinson hasn’t discussed your future with you."
Her eyes swept over Rose. "Otherwise, why would you still be working so hard?"
She crossed her arms. "Why not give up your position as Mrs. Knight and enjoy the luxurious life waiting for you?"
Rose immediately guessed what had happened.
Samantha had probably been denied access to the database.
And, unable to vent her frustration elsewhere, she had come looking for her.
Rose smiled coldly. "By your logic, why haven’t you replaced her and started enjoying that luxurious life yourself?"
She raised an eyebrow. "What is it? Desperate to get married but can’t find a husband?"
Samantha’s expression darkened instantly.
Then she sneered and looked Rose up and down.
"Do you know that Mr. Robinson already has a fiancée?"
Her voice dripped with contempt. "You’re stringing him along just so you’ll have a reliable backup plan."
She folded her arms. "Knowingly getting involved with an engaged man makes you the other woman."
A mocking smile spread across her lips. "That’s pretty despicable, don’t you think?"
