Chapter 136: Chapter 136 Your Girlfriend Is Getting Jealous
Even though Rose hadn’t been directly involved in any of it, she still felt a jolt of alarm at that moment.
Trevor’s question had been far too direct.
It struck right at the heart of the matter.
Anyone listening might have assumed he knew exactly what kind of relationship she and Ryan had once shared.
Yet Trevor showed no sign of discomfort.
Instead, he smiled politely. "I’ve ruined your plans, Mr. Knight."
His tone remained calm. "It seemed Miss Hill was about to propose just now. But if you hadn’t made up your mind yet, perhaps I’ve simply given you an easy way out."
Rose glanced at Ryan.
Trevor wasn’t wrong.
If Trevor hadn’t interrupted, would Ryan have accepted Samantha’s proposal?
With so many people watching, Ryan probably wouldn’t have wanted to embarrass Samantha publicly, even if her proposal had been disguised as a joke.
Perhaps sensing the mockery in Rose’s gaze, Ryan looked directly at her.
"Mr. Robinson is joking."
A faint smile tugged at his lips. "Mr. Robinson doesn’t strike me as someone who acts on impulse."
Ryan’s words sounded harmless enough.
But Rose could easily read between the lines.
Was he warning Trevor to be careful?
She no longer cared to find out just how indifferent Ryan was toward her.
Turning to Trevor, she said, "Let’s go."
Trevor nodded.
Rose had no intention of continuing the conversation.
Nor did she feel any need to explain herself or distance herself from Trevor in front of Ryan.
Caleb and the others were still waiting near the parking area.
The evening air was damp.
As Rose stepped down the stairs, her foot suddenly slipped.
Her body lurched forward.
"Careful."
Two voices sounded almost simultaneously.
A large, warm hand caught her arm.
Rose turned her head.
Ryan’s brows were slightly furrowed.
His grip was steady.
"Watch your step," he said calmly. "It’s slippery."
Trevor’s hand had already reached out as well.
His fingertips brushed Rose’s sleeve.
But Ryan had been faster.
For a brief moment, the atmosphere became noticeably tense.
Then a voice called out from behind them.
"Ryan?"
Rose turned.
Samantha had appeared at some point.
Although she was smiling, the displeasure in her eyes was impossible to miss.
She stared at Rose as though she were some shameless seductress trying to steal her boyfriend.
Trevor’s gaze shifted to Ryan’s hand still resting on Rose’s arm.
Then he smiled. "Mr. Knight, I think you should let go."
His tone remained courteous. "Your girlfriend looks like she’s getting jealous."
Rose immediately pulled away first.
Samantha had already stepped forward and naturally linked her arm through Ryan’s.
Her eyes flickered toward Trevor, filled with surprise and uncertainty.
Still, she chose not to ask why Trevor had proposed to someone like Rose.
Instead, she smiled politely. "Mr. Robinson, we’ll be heading out now."
Rose could practically see through Samantha’s territorial display.
Ryan didn’t seem bothered that Rose had pushed his hand away.
Nor did he show any interest in questioning the nature of her relationship with Trevor.
After a brief nod, he turned and walked away.
Just like a stranger.
As though the two of them had truly become nothing more than distant acquaintances.
Rose and Trevor headed toward the car waiting to take them back.
Along the way, Rose replayed the evening’s events over and over in her mind.
Finally, she couldn’t help asking,
"Mr. Robinson... do you know something?"
Otherwise, why would Trevor have suddenly proposed?
And why had he chosen that exact moment to interrupt Samantha?
In doing so, he had pulled her out of an embarrassing and humiliating situation.
It almost felt as though he had stepped in specifically to help her.
Could it be that Trevor knew about her history with Ryan?
Trevor continued walking without breaking stride.
"Know what?"
Rose studied his expression.
He looked genuinely confused.
Perhaps she was overthinking things.
Trevor showed no intention of continuing down that line of discussion.
Instead, he said, "Don’t put too much pressure on yourself about the proposal."
After a brief pause, he added, "In that moment, I simply thought that since Ariel is already under my name, going with the flow wouldn’t be such a bad idea. It would make things more logical."
It sounded as though he was thinking entirely about Ariel’s future.
Rose quietly let out a breath.
"Thank you. But I’ll handle this myself."
She smiled. "This isn’t the right time for me to think about those things."
Ryan would eventually give her the divorce certificate.
As for Ariel’s legal status, she could handle that on her own.
More importantly, she still hadn’t secured ownership of the antique shop.
If she remarried now just to provide Ariel with a stable family, she might lose any chance of getting it back.
Trevor glanced at her. "Does your ex-husband forbid you from remarrying?"
His tone turned playful. "Like signing a contract that you can’t remarry for three years?"
Rose couldn’t help laughing.
Actually, it wasn’t three years.
It was only one.
And that one year existed because Ryan needed time to stabilize the Knight family before marrying Samantha.
Not because he was possessive.
And certainly not because he was trying to make things difficult for her.
Trevor wasn’t the type to pry into other people’s private affairs.
After escorting Rose back to her hotel, he prepared to leave.
Before getting into his car, he paused.
Looking at Rose, he said, "Rose, if you ever want to, I’m available."
Then, without waiting for her response, he gave her space and walked away.
Rose stood frozen.
She understood exactly what Trevor meant.
If she changed her mind...
If she eventually decided marrying him was the right choice...
He would be willing at any time.
The realization left her stunned.
At that moment, Caleb emerged from behind her.
Apparently, he had overheard the exchange.
"Mr. Robinson is a real gentleman."
Rose immediately caught the teasing note in his voice.
"There’s really nothing between us."
She shook her head. "We’re only in contact because of Ariel."
Caleb looked as though he wanted to lightly knock some sense into her.
"Do you honestly think a man proposes on a whim?"
Rose tilted her head. "Maybe Samantha dragging me into her proposal as a free photographer made me look miserable. Maybe Trevor felt sorry for me and wanted to save me from embarrassment."
Caleb laughed. "Are you seriously giving Mr. Robinson the ’nice guy’ label?"
Rose smiled and shook her head. "Today was dramatic enough already. Why would I take it seriously?"
For a moment, Caleb didn’t know what to say.
Truthfully, he couldn’t figure out Trevor’s intentions either.
But one thing still bothered him. "Is Samantha really planning to marry Ryan?"
He frowned. "You two only just got divorced. Isn’t he in an awful hurry to give her a title?"
