Chapter 269: Parent-teacher meeting.
The academy looked different in summer and winter. Sienna’s last visit there had been during summer and the gates had been warm and welcoming. It was winter now, and the gates were somewhere between white and crystalline. Sienna walked briskly, her falcon uncles and aunts flanking her like a living wall. Along the way, they split up to find their children who were in different classes.
For the rest of the journey, she walked with her guards, reaching Soren’s class on the twentieth floor of a large building. The hallway was crowded with parents and students. Her gaze swept the crowd until it landed on her brother. He leaned against the wall outside his classroom, his uniform rumpled, his left eye swollen and darkened. The bruise stood out starkly against his healthy, but pale skin.
"Sis," he muttered, straightening as if her presence alone demanded discipline. "Don’t overreact."
He knew that tome. It was one that promised pain and storms. His shoulders sagged, but he nodded, resigned. Sienna’s hand twitched itching to flex her pan but she didn’t draw it yet. Still, Soren noticed that twitching in her hand. He knew she was already plotting something drastic.
"Parents and students, please enter your children’s classrooms and clear the hallways." A voice came from above every classroom door in the building.
Sienna pushed Soren inside, gently, her face stoic. Inside, the classroom was a blend of traditional and futuristic spectacles. Holographic banners floating above long tables, displaying the academy’s crest. Teachers, students and parents sat in orderly rows, their voices hushed as they watched the headmaster giving a speech on a screen.
"Sis, we have a science exhibition." Soren whispered to her.
Sienna looked at his eye and grimaced. "They school should include ’bring frozen pees’ when coming to see your child. Have you even been to the infirmary?"
Soren pretended that the headmaster’s speech was the most interesting thing in the room.
"This term," the headmaster announced, "our students have excelled in navigation, martial arts, xenobiology and exobiology. Average scores have risen by twelve percent."
All through his speech, Sienna just focused her gaze on her brother. And when it was finished, the screen turned black. A female teacher rose at the front and introduced herself to the parents. Names appeared on a holographic list before the parents. Sienna stopped it at Soren’s name. He was new to the school and he had scores for only one group of tests but they were solid.
Academic wise, her brother was doing okay, but physically?! Her jaw tightened. It seemed the stern warning she had given the principal on bullying had not been taken seriously enough.
Teachers spoke one by one, projecting holograms of students projects. As it turned out, the science exhibition was not like the ones she was familiar with on earth. All the projects could only be accessed via holograms, not physical forms. There was no need to walk around a room to watch a volcano explode with the help of chemicals.
A boy had deigned a miniature gravity well contained in a crystal sphere. One girl demonstrated a drone swarm programed to mimic migratory patterns of dark phoenixes. A very shy girl presented a botanical experiment: hybrid plants that could grow in atmospheres without air.
The room buzzed with pride. Parents clapped, feathers rustled, tails flicked. Sienna forced herself to smile, though her mind kept circling back to her brother’s injury.
After the reports, the students ushered parents into the extra credit exhibition hall. Sienna raised her brows at the name. She had never seen so many teenagers eager to get extra credit. The hall was vast, lined with transparent walls that looked out into the academy’s orbital gardens. Displays hovered in midair, each project accompanied by a holographic interface.
Soren took her to his own exhibit: a tomato plant that could help soothe mental breaks! She turned to her brother, brows raised, lips curved upward. Soren blushed and fiddled with his fingers. Sienna laughed.
"And they call me lazy!"
He blushed red like the tomatoes on display. "Sis, the competition for extra credit is harder than that for the science exhibition projects. Most of the students here started working on this exhibition months ago. I am new. I haven’t been here for more than a month. I had to do what I could with the resources I had."
She snorted. "What grade did you get?"
He scratched the back of his head. "S."
Sienna laughed. S was an excellent grade, the best of the best. "Of course its an S, our tomatoes are unique. You did contribute to their growth by watering and picking them, so I guess I can give you a pass. But don’t take a short cut next time."
His face flushed with embarrassment. He had a wide grin on his face, but the bruise on his face made her grimace again. ruining the moment. Sienna’s eyes narrowed. Whoever had struck him had not only hurt her brother but dared to mar the dignity of her family.
The whole school knew Soren was her brother and he was under the protection of Elias and the queen. So, who had the guts to hit him?
"Sis, come and look some of the other ’S’ projects." Soren pulled her away from his tomato. The S projects were already dazzling the crowd. Like the simulation of terraforming techniques using nanite clouds. A holographic map of Reindeer beast man migrations across three planets. A prototype of an exo suit designed for cubs with deformities. The exhibition was a testament to the academy’s brilliance.
Sienna could see why parents paid the abnormal fees and signed their children up as students as soon as their pregnancies were confirmed.
When the meeting concluded, parents filtered out, their voices filled with praise. Sienna didn’t linger, she dragged her brother to the classroom by the hand.
"Now," she said softly, dangerously.
Soren swallowed. "Sis, it’s nothing. Just a fight. I can handle it."
Her hand slipped into her bag. The foldable pan gleamed as she pulled it free, the metal catching the light from the decorations on the wall. The sound of it unfurling and coming together was enough to silence the chatter of those peeking inside through the windows.
Sienna leveled the pan at Soren, her eyes sharp as blades. "Start talking." she ordered.
