Chapter 268: A different kind of thief.
Sienna had to give credit to the king for keeping them entertained through breakfast. It all started when he snatched the position of head of the family, sitting firmly in Elias’s chair. His eyes had dared Elias to do something about it. The kings smile had been provocative. It had taken everything in Elias to hold back from hitting the man.
When that failed, the king decided to tell funny stories about Elias from the battlefield, making them laugh. All the while, the royal couple had devoured their meal with the greed of people who were starved in the palace!
When the king finished his last bite, he leaned back, burped thunderously and declared it was time to go.
"Treating my home like a restaurant." Sienna muttered.
The queen dabbed her lips delicately, already rising. "Splendid as always, Sienna. We will be back next week."
Sienna blinked, confused. Back? Where? Were they returning for breakfast again? But before she could ask, the royal entourage swept out.
She meant to follow them immediately and see them out, but grandma Jess held her back. The old woman had a solemn look on her face.
"Sienna, you can’t do it."
Sienna frowned. "Do what?"
Grandma Jess hissed, "Frame Princess Lina for a fake miscarriage. Do you think the royal family is full of foolish people? They will invite the best doctors and use the best equipment to examine you. If it comes out that you are lying, you and your family will suffer the consequences. If the queen wants to prank her sister-in-law, let her do it. That is their family business. We are staying out of it."
Patting the hands of the old woman, Sienna replied gently, "Grandma, the queen was joking. I know my boundaries, so I would never take such a risk. It’s not like I have a grudge against Princess Lina. The purple pearl bracelet is enough to mess with her."
Jess raised her brows at the mention of the bracelet. She wanted to say something about that too, but decided not too. Instead, she would just find a way to make sure Sienna did not show up with the bracelet on her wrist at that wedding.
Sienna left the old woman and rushed outside. By the time she reached the courtyard, the air ships were already lifting into the sky. Her heart sank when she notices empty crates and containers from her food storage and pantry sitting outside. The royals were not leaving empty handed, they had taken her property.
Shalin, breathless, ran up clutching a ledger. "Lady Sienna! Half of our food storage is gone. The red honey jars, the golden honey jars. the dried fish, the roasted sea weed snacks, the dry meat---half of everything!"
Sienna gasped so hard her chest hurt. "Dry sea food?"
Shalin shook her head miserably. "Not spared."
Sienna’s scream tore through the compound. "Ridiculous! The royal family can afford banquets of pearls and gold. Why steal from me?!" Her voice cracked with fury. "Honey! My honey!"
Relatives poured into the courtyard at the commotion.
Mrs. Miller clutched her shawl. "Sienna, calm yourself before you faint. Let us record what was taken so that we can replace it."
Her stepsisters fetched pens and paper. Her uncles dragged crates into the open, muttering about royal greed. Grandma Jess summoned the kitchen maids, accountants and butler in charge of storage and Geo. She was stern and practical, ordering everyone to line up the remaining supplies.
The inventory began.
"Thirty barrels of golden honey." Shalin announced.
Mira followed up, "Ten jars of red honey."
Liman shouted, "Twenty sacks of dried fish, four each from the four kinds of fish we have."
"Ten packets of Seaweed rolls, 100 packets of roasted seaweed snacks, thirty two packets of chili lime seaweed, ten crates of pink sea salt." Her mother shared with trembling hands. "All the crab jerky, salted squid and smoked eel strips."
Sienna paced like a caged beasts, her husband watching silently from the porch, with his father and grandfather. Their expressions were similar, cold and unreadable, but she could feel their disapproval. Whether it was because of her actions or those of the king was hard to tell.
"This is theft," she yelled in their direction. "He didn’t ask. If Serenya knew, she would have told me. The king has plundered our resources like a pirate."
Jess whispered, "Perhaps it was to remind you of your place, Sienna. They are your play mates, but they can still take from you what you love the most. Just because the king has not made any moves to capture the bees does not mean he cannot do it. Be glad all he has taken is half of the honey."
Sienna whirled on her. "Be glad! I refuse to be glad. I give them free honey and when they want more, I sell at a discount. They have more treasures than all of us. I only have a little bit. Why can’t I have my little bit?"
Shalin continued reading, "150 boxes of candied fruit. Half of the grain sacks."
Sienna huffed. "Grain?" She shook grandma Jess’s arm. "Grain? Does the royal family lack grain? They have the biggest and highest number of grain reserves in this empire. Why take mine?"
"Because Elias took treasures on that smuggling operation and he brought them home to you." Jesse’s voice came from the porch. "The king is not blind. You took from him and now, he has taken from you."
Sienna pressed a hand to her forehead, forcing herself to breathe. "So this was revenge?" She straightened her shoulders. "I cannot deal with this right now. The Glory academy awaits. The parent-teacher meeting is today. Anyone going with me has thirty minutes to get ready and we set off."
As she made her way into the house, Sienna could still hear Shalin reading more of her supplies that had been taken. She was on the different homemade jams. "Thief," she muttered. "I don’t care what anyone says, this is theft."
When she was about to change her outfit, her phone received an alert. It was a money transfer from the queen and a three line apology, ’My sincere regrets.’
"At least one of them has a conscience." She muttered. Her heart started to mend. With money in hand, she would just consider this a purchase. But next week, if they did come over, she would lock the doors to her storage, pantry and kitchen tightly.
To think they had guarded against the thieves in the night, only to be robbed in day light by someone that came through the front door!
