Chapter 256: Do not presume.

Sienna took a break, as did everyone whose duty it was to listen during the sessions. Cups of coffee went around, legs were stretched, and Sienna sat her desk, flipping through the second file Mija had set before her.

Mija leaned over her shoulder, faint scales on her cheeks shimmering faintly in the light. "You will love this one," she whispered with a sly grin. "It’s simple. Just a divorce request. The reason? Infidelity."

Sienna arched a brow, "Simple? If it came to this office, them nothing about it is simple."

Still, she skimmed the file. The names were familiar enough, especially the man. He was Tariq Benali, he was an actor! "He is that actor whose acting is so bad it made me smash my old phone!"

Mija chuckled.

Sienna scoffed, amused. "I had no idea he was married. No wonder the divorce came to my office, not a courtroom. In court it would be made public, but here everything is private. Invite them in." She motioned at the guards.

The doors opened, and the couple entered. Sienna’s eyes immediately caught on Tariq. He was tall, broad-shouldered, with hair as red and embers. His eyes gleamed like molten copper, sharp and intelligent, framed by lashed that would make any woman jealous. His jawline was strong, his posture regal, and his aura radiated confidence. He was, in, short, perfect in appearance. A red fox beast man who could be described as a tall drink of water.

Beside him walked his wife, a fox beast woman. Sienna’s eyes widened, though she hated the thought that crossed her mind. The woman was not attractive. Her hair was dull, a lifeless brown streaked with gray though she was not old. Her eyes were small, her features uneven, her posture hunched as though weighed down by years of disappointment.

Sienna winced inwardly. Ugly, she thought reluctantly. I shouldn’t say it, but it’s true.

Mija giggled again, whispering. "See? Obvious case, right?"

Sienna cleared her throat, presuming boldly, "Well, then," she said loudly, her voice carrying across the office. "I suppose the affair was his. Handsome men rarely resist temptation, especially those in the entertainment industry."

Tariq stiffened, his copper eyes narrowing. But before he could speak, his wife Sammy Benali raised her hand.

Sienna blinked. "Yes?"

Sammy’s voice was quiet, but steady. "It was me," she said. "I had the affair."

The words struck like a thunderclap. Mija gasped, scales on her hands rippling in shock. Sienna’s jaw dropped, her presumption shattered.

Elder Mini’s cane dropped to the ground. Everyone in the office was shocked, and they could not hide it. They had the same thought on their minds...Her? This woman? With her looks, she cheated on someone like Tariq! It made no sense. Yet the truth hung in the air, undeniable.

Sienna leaned back in her chair, stunned. The case she thought would be simple had just twisted into something far more complicated. The man looked like a figure carved from myth, a prince from another world. The woman looked ordinary, and yet she was the one who had strayed?

"Are you impotent?" Mija blurted to Tariq.

Tariq was stunned. "Of course not. If you don’t believe me, I can prove it right now." His hands worked quickly, ripping open the buttons of his expensive trousers.

The guards intervened, stopping him before he could traumatize or fascinate or offend the ladies.

Mija fanned her face, "Point made, you are a giant in the sack. But you can’t blame me for asking the question. We all assumed you were the guilty party, but she is the one that broke the bond. It makes no sense!"

Tariq looked at his wife. His eyes burned, not with anger but something deeper--hurt, confusion, perhaps even shame. Sammy kept her gaze low, her hands trembling slightly, though her words had been firm.

Sienna tapped her fingers against the file. "Mrs. Benali, explain. Why would you betray your mate?"

The woman opened her mouth, but the words caught in her throat. She glanced at her husband, then at Sienna, then back at the floor.

Mija said loudly, "See? It is because of your silence that we are left with no choice but to assume Tariq falls short in that department. You have to tell us why you cheated? What did you find so unappealing about the dream man of 99% of the population of this empire?"

Sienna frowned. "I am in the one percent. I am married to Elias, I don’t even need to add more to explain." She smiled proudly, for a brief moment and then became more serious. She looked at Sammy. "Mrs. Benali, I hate mysteries. This office will not sign off on your divorce without a proper explanation. It’s not because we enjoy listening to your scandals but because we need future reference material. This office also has to avoid being sued for approving wrongful divorces. No matter what you say, it will not be made public record."

Silence followed her words. Neither husband nor wife said a thing.

"There is nothing to explain," Tariq finally said." I gave her everything. A home, loyalty, money. And yet she...." He stopped, his jaw tightening again. "She won’t even tell me why."

Sammy lifted her head, her dull eyes flashing with something unexpected--defiance. "I had the affair," she repeated, louder this time. "And I will explain why."

Sienna’s heart thudded, The office seemed to shrink, the air thick with anticipation. Even Mija ceased all giggling and hissing, her tongue flicking nervously.

Just as Mrs. Benali inhaled to speak, the doors banged open. Ali burst inside, her cheeks streaked with tears, clutching a small pan in her hands. Her sobs echoed through the room, shattering the heavy silence.

"Mama!" she wailed, running straight to Sienna’s desk, "A woman tried to take me. I hit her! My pan is broken!"

Sienna froze, snatching her daughter up quickly. She shot a sharp look at the guards and her aunt, and she barked. "Go, check. Now!"
