Chapter 252: Guilt for blood.

The boy trudged off, dragging his wings, while Numia collapsed dramatically against her husband’s chest. "Oh, my poor baby! Sienna, you’re so cruel!" she wailed.

Grandma Byra fluttered around Christo, offering Numia smelling salts that were delivered by a servant. She even asked if the woman wanted tea, while Sienna rolled her eyes.

"Cruel?" Sienna scoffed. "Cruel is letting him grow up thinking tantrums solve problems. I am saving him from becomes a useless falcon who cries and runs away every time life becomes too uncomfortable. If you want to help him, grow some brains. You are a grown woman, a mother at that! Please, just be more sensible going forward." She touched her forehead, glaring at her children, "If you two ever try this, I will pull your claws and teeth out. Don’t test me."

Ali and Eli exchanged terrified glances, curling their hands, to hide their well trimmed nails.

Ali whispered, "Will she really pull our claws?"

Eli replied, "Only if we try to run away with no money, no plan and small suitcase."

They both nodded solemnly, vowing never to test their mother’s wrath.

The grown men looked at the boy, their brows raised curiously. Had the boy been listening? Why was his understanding so different?

Sienna looked at the rest of the younger children, "The same goes for the rest of you. There is no running away from home in this family, only pain and death."

Everyone shuddered. Even Numia paused her sniffling.

Geo watched from a distance, his ears twitching. He wondered if he would have run away from home of his father was as....creative as Sienna. He had a feeling she would really pull someone’s claw just to prove a point.

Elias cleared his throat, "You all heard the boss of this family. There is no running away from home or divorcing. Only death."

Sienna’s mouth opened a little. Like the rest, she turned and looked at Elias curiously. Where had he heard the words divorce from?

"What is he talking about?" Jess whispered to Jesse?

Jesse shrugged. "Beats me. All I know is that this family is both amusing and a headache at the same time. I am surprised she didn’t hit the boy with a pan."

Jess sighed, disappointed. "Right? I have been waiting for her to unleash that cooking tool since I met her but she is pretending to be a good person. And I can’t ask her to hit a random person because it will come off as...irresponsible. The whole reason for allowing her to go with me to the Twindell estate was so that she could hit Mona Twindell with that thing across the face."

The Veythar elders turned around, leaving as they whispered closely. They started scheming ways to get Sienna to hit someone in their presence.

In the meantime, Sienna clapped her hands. "Alright, falcons and foxes, and everyone that is eavesdropping, the drama is over. Back to work. We need to eat and wash the theatrics of the day off our bodies. After that, its off to bed for everyone. No late night movies. Also, a small reminder to all the school going children, school resumes in two days. The plague holiday is over."

A round of disappointed groans followed.

Sienna narrowed her eyes. "Are those complaints I hear?"

"No, big sis." Mixed voices replied.

The little ones scampered away, while the adults laughed. Only one couple remained downcast: Numia who was sniffling and Christo who carried her off to their cottage.

Perhaps it was because if Sienna’s decree, but that night, the compound was unusually quiet by bed time. The cubs slept off very quickly, so Sienna and Elias retreated to their bedroom early. But, they didn’t sleep immediately. First, they had a patting session, which was the ninth one.

After, Sienna lay back against the pillows while Elias massaged her feet. He was surprisingly gentle, doing something he had never done before. The warmth of his touch should have lulled her into comfort, but her mind was restless.

Instead of savoring the moment, she tilted her head and asked softly, "What do you think....about is having a third child? The way your grandparents reacted, sooner or later, they are going to start pressuring us."

Elias’s hand stilled. His gaze, sharp yet conflicted, lingered on her face. "Sienna," he said slowly, "To be direct, you are not the woman I married. We both know this. Just as we both know how bad my relationship was with her. You are a different person. To rush into another child before we truly know each other would be reckless. If there is hope for us...for a future, I would rather start from the beginning. I want us to learn each other from scratch. I want us to accept each other. Only then will we decide if we are ready."

Sienna’s heart clenched at his words. She had confessed because she had no choice, hearing him say it directly made the distance between them feel real. She pressed on, changing the subject, "Do you think Numia will have a mental break? It crossed my mind at dinner. She is in a very fragile state right now. Before uncle Christo took her away, she looked pale and her eyes were glossy."

His expression darkened. He resumed the massage, though his movements were slower, thoughtful. "Your aunt is irrational, overly emotional and I suspect that her hormones are not in balance. If she suffers a mental break, she will lose the pregnancy. That is certain. No pregnant beast woman in the midst of a mental break has ever been able to carry a pregnancy to full term. But there is nothing we can do except wait and watch. Her mind must hold, or the child will not survive."

Sienna closed her eyes. the weight of his words pressing on her chest. She didn’t like Numia much, but the baby was different. It was her blood relative. "Something is wrong with me." She said very softly, "I care about Numia’s baby more than I care about my stepsisters." Truly, something had to be wrong with her. In terms of blood, those children were closer to her than Numia’s baby.

Elias’s voice broke through her thoughts, quieter now, almost tender. "When you look at the girls, all you see is your father. All you see is how they cling to your mother. You are biased against them...which I think is not fair. But, you don’t show it around them anymore. I have noticed that you are lowering your guard against them. Most importantly, you paid their school tuition and meals from your own money.

Being from the same family does not mean verbally declaring your love. Sometimes it just means being good to your relatives, and you are good to the girls. That is enough. If we speak technically, all these people are not truly your family.

The fact that you have embraced them and their problems is already great. So, ease your mind and take your time, the way you are taking time with me."

Sienna’s lips trembled. She wanted to believe him, but guilt gnawed at her.

Elias leaned closer, his hand resting on her ankle. "We will face it together. Slowly, step by step. Just as we must face each other anew."
