Chapter 251: Corven Junior tries to run away.
Dinner preparation tasks fell to the cooks, while the rest of the women sat around a table in the living room, discussing Numia’s baby, and what to buy. Despite the emotions and disturbances from earlier, they were all excited.
"How I wish she would give birth to an egg." Sienna said.
Some of the women laughed, and others shrieked.
"That is so wrong." Linera shuddered. "But I would not mind seeing the horrified look on Numia’s face if it happens."
Opinions flew in the air, while Elias and Eli looked on, playing a word game on his phone.
"Actually, snakes do hatch their young from eggs." Mija shared, walking in with a baggie of desserts and pastries she had bought from outside. "Also, guess who managed to swindle a date out of the shimmery black panther of the fox tribe?" She danced with her shoulders, moving them from side to side, up and down.
The other women had not yet got a moment to respond when Soren came barreling through the front door, hair sticking up like he had wrestled with some claws and thunder. "Sis, Corven is trying to run away. He says he is too embarrassed to stay here!"
The room erupted. Chairs scraped, women shrieked, cubs raced for the door and Elias muttered something about "another circus."
They all rushed outside, only to find a crowd of adults and a scene so ridiculous it could only be found in comedy movies. All the younger cousins were piled on top of a boy in falcon beast form wings flapping helplessly, talons scratching at the dirt. Above then, a suitcase dangled from a tree branch, swinging like a pendulum.
Ali rushed to join the pile, angry with the others for failing to invite her to such a fun activity.
Grandma Byra started to fuss immediately, while her husband pulled her back. Numia, with one hand on her belly and another on her wait, was wailing like a banshee. "My poor boy. My precious falcon baby! I swear I will never do it again! Don’t leave me! You are all I have left, I will die without you! My Coco, please!" Her voice carried across the courtyard, making even the horses and cows in the barns pause mid-chew.
Christo was standing beside his wife, frowning at his son. He seemed lost for words.
Grandma Jess whispered to her husband, "Her Coco!"
Eli sighed and said to his father, "Mama’s family is too extra. Precious falcon, Coco, she will die without him! I don’t think she understands how life and death works."
Sienna was not moved by all the theatrics. She strode forward, fox-fur cloak snapping behind her, eyes narrowed wit the kind of authority that made the younger children scatter. She picked a side...literally, and grabbed a fistful of feathers from Corven Junior’s left wing. The boy screeched indignantly, but Sienna yanked him up to eye level.
"You," she said, voice sharp as a blade. "Running away? With one small suitcase that doesn’t hold more than five shirts and one pair of shoes! Do you think you are starring in some tragic opera? Because let me tell you, you are not even good enough for the chorus line. Do you even know that your mother is pregnant and your actions could cause her to lose the baby?"
The boy whimpered, feathers ruffling. Sienna didn’t relent. She gave him a swift smack on the rump, loud enough to echo. "That’s for being stupid," she declared. "And this---" another snack, _--is for embarrassing the family. Yes, your mother is an airhead, but we all know this and we accept it. We choose to rise above her silliness and ignorance. We find humor in her stupidity. You think shame is solved by running?"
Another smack, on the head this time. "Do you know how much money we were going to lose on searching for you?" Another smack. "How many hours of sleep I would lose. Since you have brought me shame, you are going to be scrubbing pots for the rest of your teenage life. And I am grounding you for the rest of your life. I am putting a tracker in you so that we don’t lose track of you ever." She kicked his backside, not too hard, but enough to make a thump and cause the boy to wince.
The younger cousins gasped. Ali and Eli instinctively clutched their bottoms, eyes with horror. They saw their futures flashed before them: one wrong move, and their mother’s hands and feet would descend like divine punishment, followed by grounding and being forced to scrub pots!
Even Elias raised a brow, silently calculating whether he should keep his tail tucked when they were having a fight, going forward. Surely, she would grip it and hit him the way she was gripping that wing.
"Sienna, what are you doing?" Numia screamed. "I know that you are angry with me but you don’t have to take it out on my son."
Sienna turned, with narrowed, eyes. Numia was trying to rush over, but Christo was holding her back. "Shut up and let me handle this or I swear on every beast god that I will finally lay hands on you Numia." She snapped. "And it will not be to bless you. It will be to break a few of your teeth. You have pissed me off for one night, take a break."
The young children gasped again.
Sienna turned back to Corven Junior, continuing her tirade, mocking but funny, her words slicing through the boy’s pride like butter. "What was the plan, hmm? Flying off to the next city? With what money? Were you going to trade your feathers for rice and meat? You think you can get free meals by acting dramatic like your mother?
Little falcon, you would be plucked and roasted before sunset tomorrow! And that suitcase, what did you pack? Did you take some of your mother’s silliness and stuff it inside? Did you include your shame? Or is it just a collection of bad decisions?"
The boy sniffled, trying to fold his wings around himself. Sienna tugged his feathers, again, forcing him to stand straight. "Listen carefully. You are not running away. You are marching into the kitchen and you are going to chop vegetables until your talons ache. You will stir soup, wash dishes, mop floors and if you complain, I will spank you again, harder. Do you understand?"
"Yes, big sis." he mumbled, defeated.
"Good." Sienna released him with a shove in the direction of the house. "Now go. And if you so much as try to fly, I am going to shoot you down and tie you a tree myself."
